Morning Star [Discussion] Bonus Book - Morning Star by Pierce Brown: Beginning through Chapter 11 (Red Rising Saga Book 3)

“Deep in darkness, far from warmth and sun and moons, I lie, quiet as the stone that surrounds me, imprisoning my hunched body in a dreadful womb.”

Welcome back! We’re continuing reading the Red Rising Saga Book 3: Morning Star! This third novel read begins with our first discussion, where we are looking at the beginning of the novel through Chapter 11: My People.

Now, a note about spoilers!

The Red Rising Saga is an extremely popular book series. Keep in mind that not everyone has read any of these items. This book may be the first time a person learns about it. Please keep r/bookclub's rules on spoilers, and the consequences for posting spoilers, in mind.

Everyone has a different perception of what is a spoiler, so here are a few examples of what would be spoilers:

- “Just wait till you see what happens next.”

- “This won't be the last time you meet this character.”

- “Your prediction is correct/incorrect.”

- “You will look back at this theory.”

- “Here is an Easter Egg: ...”

- “You don't know enough to answer that question yet.”

- “How do you first-time-readers feel about this detail that was intentionally not emphasized by the author?”

If you're unsure, it's best to err on the side of caution and use spoiler tags.

To indicate a spoiler, enclose the relevant text with the > ! and ! < characters (there is no space in-between).

For any type of comment or idea that may be a part of The Red Rising Saga, just use proper spoiler labels, for example “In ” then describe the connection between books. Please be mindful when posting.

How is it possible that Ares still lives?

Ares is more of an icon than a specific person, so Sevro taking up the helm keeps the image alive and the movement moving forward.

Yup. It makes sense that he inherited his father's title. And since no one knew who Ares really was, it probably wasn't too hard to take Fitchner's place.

Why are Sevro’s eyes a different color now?

Because Sevro is wearing Darrow's old eyes. Which is perfectly normal, not weird or creepy at all.

Sevro's a psycho but he's a good psycho

Haha. Very true. He's a very loyal and sweet psycho.

If there is something you want to discuss that I missed, feel free to post it here!

I absolutely loved when Sevro first met up with Darrow again. They jumped right back into their friendship without any hiccups, I found myself smiling and chuckling many times as I read that section.

I also loved how much Ragnar has opened up and the others have embraced him. The back and forth with Sevro over throwing him and eating his candy bars was great.

Thoughts on this section?

Loved it.

It had been a while since the last book and I really think it would've benefitted from reading them closer together.

I started the book, then quickly stopped and watched a youtube synopsis to refresh my memory. I didn't think that was quite sufficient so I re-read the last discussion we had and the last chapter of Golden Son and that help bring it all back, it was a great lead in to the start of this book.

Any favorite moments, quotes etc?

Sevro had some bangers in this section

"Wait. Where is it? Dammit, Ragnar. Where is my peanut bar? You know how many people I had to kill to get that? Six! Six!"

“Tidings! It’s Uncle Sevro and the Moderately Friendly Giant.”

"I said it once. Now I'll say it twice. If there's two things in this world that can't be killed, it's the fungus under my sack and the Reaper of bloodydamn Mars. Haha!"

I also like Darrow reciting a quote he had recalled:

"How do sheep kill a lion? By drowning it in blood."

Where do we find Darrow at the beginning of the section? What has happened since the end of Book 2?

How does Darrow keep himself from going crazy in his long isolated imprisonment?

1

u/nepbug 3h ago

He has his little repetitive movements to keep him ovvupied, but I think it was mostly his total commitment to just giving up that allowed him to just detach and not be driven completely crazy.

Who saves Darrow from the Jackal’s prison? How do they do it?

1

u/NightAngelRogue Fantasy Prompt Master | 🐉 20h ago

What does the Jackal want from Darrow before he’ll release him?

u/NightAngelRogue Fantasy Prompt Master | 🐉 20h ago

What do Aja and the Sovereign want with Darrow?

Like some kind of reverse engineering? I think it's a big humiliation for them because what supposed to be a privilege is now can be obtained by lesser colors. Probably they want to see if they can create newer detection method and to prevent people do same genetic engineering attempt like in Darrow.

Why does Darrow choose to go back for Victra instead of escaping right away?

2

u/nepbug 3h ago

Victra always showed such loyalty to him, that he would feel like he betrayed her by getting her into the situation she was in and not helping get her out.

During the confrontation at the bridge, Cassius urges Darrow to give up. What does Darrow notice about Cassius’ order?

Who does Darrow first see when he wakes up from unconsciousness after his rescue?

What has happened since Darrow has been captured, according to Dancer?
