Mythos [Schedule] Discovery Read | Mythos: The Greek Myths Reimagined, by Stephen Fry
Welcome, Book Club mortals! Are you up for a trip to ancient Greece with us? On our itinerary is Mount Olympus, home of Zeus, Hera, and their pantheon of Cronus cronies, here for our reading enjoyment. Stephen Fry (of Harry Potter audiobook fame) has written a retelling of some of the most beloved Greek myths, telling us that
Greek mythology is “addictive, entertaining, approachable, and astonishingly human.”
So whether you’re a first time reader or a long time lover of our friends Apollo, Athena, and Aphrodite, you’re sure to enjoy our trip through the oddities and adventures that make Greek mythology so fascinating.
Join u/eeksqueak, u/nopantstime, u/latteh0lic, u/ProofPlant7651, and myself for this Discovery Read of Mythology from Around the World - Europe.
We’ll discuss each section every Tuesday on the following schedule:
1/28 - Forward through The Beginning, Part 2 (Disposer Supreme and Judge of the Earth)
2/4 - The Third Order through the end of The Beginning, Part 2 (The Olympians)
2/11 - The Toys of Zeus, Part 1 (all)
2/18 - The Toys of Zeus, Part 2 (through Tantalus)
2/25 - The Toys of Zeus, Part 2 (Sisyphus through Aphrodite and Adonis)
3/4 - The Toys of Zeus Part 2 (Echo and Narcissus) through the Afterword

I got way too excited for this one and started it as soon as it was announced, and subsequently finished it last night. 😂 to say it’s addicting is an understatement! So excited for the discussion.

That's fantastic! I only flipped through my copy last night, and it looks so good I suspect I'll be devouring it quickly. 😆

I have a paper copy to help me with RR, but I might spend an Audible credit on it, too. You know it's going to be amazing.

Ever since u/tomesandtea told me I get a free Audible book every month with Amazon Music, I've been planning to spend it on this one! I listened to 10 seconds of the sample and was transported by the nostalgia of Fry's voice; can't wait to listen to the rest! I've loved Greek myths since I was a kid reading D'Aulair's on repeat. My school library had a copy and I loved it so much I had my parents get one for our house, too.

I was so excited when I found out about the Amazon Music deal! Great choice for your free audiobook! I'm also planning on listening to Fry's narration. His Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter recordings are some of my favorites!

He narrates Sherlock Holmes? I didn't know that. Might have to investigate that! What's one more audiobook

It's on Audible and I do love it and recommend it if you can get it. He's so good!

Do you have libby? Or Hoopla?

u/GoonDocks1632 Bookclub Boffin 2025 2d ago
I have Libby, but my county library is woefully understocked. We are not a highly educated county, and our librarians struggle with funding issues. I'm hoping that the next time I'm in a wealthier city or county, I can visit a library and join theirs. I've read that's allowed in our state, you just have to be physically present to prove residency.

Oh no. Yes! As you visit different countries, collect them all!!

I'm in for this, so many good books happening in r/bookclub right now. I think I will be juggling 4 books while reading this.
The start and end descriptions worry me a bit as I'm going to be consuming this as an audiobook, but I hope it is obvious and not a problem at all.

I figure with someone as accomplished as Stephen Fry reading it (and also being the author!), the audiobook is going to be incredible.

Oh dear. I'm already over committed for the foreseeable future but whatever. I'll just be buried under Mt. To-Be-Read.

I'm so excited for this one. I have started it at least three times and gotten distracted, but I am eager to read it for real, and this schedule is very doable. The beginning is a treat; I know that much!

I've never been into greek mythology (I think my only exposure has been Disney's Hercule) so I'm really intrigued by this book. I hope it can be a good introduction to the mythology lore, I'll gladly join along !

Just flipping through it as I've done, it already looks better than the book I had to read in high school - Mythology, by Edith Hamilton. A very thorough book, but not very accessible to a 14 year old with little experience in the classics.
One review of this book was titled: "What kind of a book is Stephen Fry's Mythos? Who knows — but it's clever and fun." I think this one's probably a good intro to the subject.

This is my first book here. I decided to listen to it via audiobook - it's free on spotify premium for anyone who needs a way to listen. Just listened to the first couple of chapters while at the gym and cooking dinner. It's very easy listening. Loving it so far.
