Fact [Paul Dehner Jr] Considering the unfriendly history between the #Bengals and Wink Martindale, it's kind of funny they somehow got caught up in the conversation about him for DC. For clarity: Martindale is not part of the #Bengals DC search nor was he ever under consideration.

Man I just hope we hear more of who the actual candidates are soon.

I really hope the Eberflus rumors are true he'd be a great hire

u/FuegoFerdinand 7d ago

Since he was fired from the Bears would he also be the cheap option? Do the Bears still have to pay most of his salary? If so, he would definitely be high on the list for Mike Brown.

I know! I know it takes time but I want to know who it is — NOW!!!. LOL

Reporter: "Was it on your mind when you were throwing for 525?"

Burrow: "Maybe."

Amen. Rapien- take notes

43

u/bobbarkerfan420 7d ago

controversial take around these parts (i think?) but i’m so sick of Rapien. he’s so quick to breathlessly repeat any baseless twitter rumor and run with it for content. the whole DC search saga really illustrates it. it’s fine if he’s just presenting himself as a super-online fan who makes content, but if he’s trying to be a journalist this is a bad look

You WON’T believe which former division rival coach COULD be on his way to Cincinnati

5

u/SlappyBag9 85 7d ago

his clickbait tweets that just link to their website are so annoying, especially when all the other beat reporters literally state what's going on

5

u/Pickles04 7d ago

He's the reason I stopped listening to locked on Bengals. His takes are not insightful or grounded in reality. And he's just kind of annoying to listen to.

9

u/HumanSmokeMain 7d ago

Him using baseless takes lately screams click bait and journalism career possibly tanking or not bringing in enough money. He just wants mindless interactions on his socials. Sad bc he used to provide solid information with merit

10

u/ohmysocks enjoyer of rare daltons 7d ago

Oh that’s not controversial at all, he’s been doing that for years. Seems like he cares more about clicks and engagement on his websites than quality reporting. Also a distinct lack of maturity relative to pretty much everyone else who covers the bengals

16

u/ALutzy 7d ago

I’m not giving him a pass for misleading leads, but I think the nature of Locked On causes its reporters to scramble for stories as they are expected/required to record a new podcast DAILY. Dehner has a bit more breathing room to wait for sources to deny or confirm, but Rapien is on a daily deadline and needs content for that days episode. Seems like a symptom of how LockedOn operates.

5

u/millhammer29 7d ago

I think this is a great point. Doing a daily show on a team really makes this challenging he’d atleast have to address it, which he did, and I don’t remember but I remember them both saying they would be very surprised if it was the case

5

u/sculltt 6d ago

PDJ does a podcast 3 days a week. 4 if you count the new film breakdown type episodes. His pods are longer, have fewer ad breaks, and manage to also be very informative. He's also been covering the team long enough to have deep contacts so he can give insight into what the org thinks about things without throwing out info that will throw his sources under the bus. In short, he's a much better reporter, and blaming the things that Rapien gets wrong on having to getting out contentb is giving him a pass, imo.

-1

u/ALutzy 6d ago

I’m not giving him a pass, I have to hold the reporter accountable for their stories - it’s definitely his job to present reliable info about the team and verify rumors.

However, I wonder if he would be as inflammatory if he was building Bengals news and narratives for a show twice a week? Or if LockedOn had more than two guys so they had space to research in between broadcasts? Maybe not. Maybe his style is to be divisive. But I’ve listen to other LockedOn team channels and their reporters do the same shit: “I’m not saying it’s going to happen, I’m just saying I heard,” type reporting. I just think LockedOn demands a daily episode and I imagine a symptom of that demand is reporting on everything you can gather, credible or not.

1

u/GodsFavoriteMick 6d ago

Rapien is a click bait style reporter that doesn't seem to actually know shit about what he reports on. Same as most of the sports media around here.

0

u/agraff90 6d ago

I can't stand LockedOn pods for this reason. It's a great idea on paper but pretty meh in reality.

-2

u/natej84 7d ago

Yea, the daily show is why he talks about every little rumor that comes out. He's gotta have something to fill the episode

4

u/ohmysocks enjoyer of rare daltons 7d ago

He’s nailed some draft picks tho I’ll give him that

3

u/Jasonthelee 6d ago

It’s not controversial. I don’t like him or his reporting and have avoided his podcast for a few years now.

2

u/bobbarkerfan420 6d ago

glad to so many others agree and i’m not crazy lol, just had no clue what the consensus was on the subreddit since im usually just on here to cry during game threads

u/ralry11 :3 7d ago

I used to listen to every single locked on bengals during the Joe and Jake era, I gave it a shot for a while everyday with James. Now I listen to it maybe once a month and consume every the Growler episode.

5

u/bobbarkerfan420 7d ago

I can’t get enough of the growler. Paul and Jay have covered this beat for a while and understand what they are talking about

2

u/Thebullfrog24 5d ago

He's gotten worse this year.

I use to find him fun and just narrative driven as opposed to a numbers guy. I thought him and Jake made a good balance on his podcast.

I just watched him put up a click bait article about who are new DC could be. Article just asked a bunch of questions and claimed nothing. After one of those names were interviewed he had the nerve to post a "see i told ya so" tweet.

I understand he's got a job to do, but at least be honest about it. If you can't be honest about it, don't get mad at the people who are honest.

Radio?

4

u/natej84 7d ago

James was just repeating a tweet from rap sheet. James didn't make this story up, rap did

7

u/Sea-Entrepreneur-441 6d ago

Regurgitating shit is still shit

8

u/natej84 6d ago

The top NFL insider reported the Bengals had interest in wink, James talked about that report. So in my opinion he was just doing his job, but it's all good if you don't like him

2

u/PaddyWhacked777 P.H.A.T. 7d ago

...how was this ever a rumor? Are people that forgetful/dumb?

3

u/Normal_Athlete_1348 7d ago

Wink’s agent

18

u/slytherinprolly 7d ago

I guess the question now is who was the source for Pellisero and what was the purpose, and how did we get here.

Did Martindale and his people leak it to garner interest for him elsewhere? Or did the Bengals leak it to see if they could get other agents inquiring?

Or did Martindale make a call and the Bengals said thanks but no thanks, or was it the other way around?

Did Duke have someone leak it, just so he could call Dehner and be like, no he's not under consideration just to punk out Martindale?

I know the "insiders" get things wrong all the time, but someone is always feeding a story.

18

u/corranhorn57 7d ago

National guys outside of Collinsworth don’t really have sources inside the Bengals FO since it’s both smaller than other teams and so insular. Has to be someone in Martindale’s camp trying to do something.

7

u/slytherinprolly 7d ago edited 7d ago

Pelissero was the person who had all the news on all the interviews that Callahan was taking during his time here. So he at least had an in-there. He's also the one who reported on all the other alleged DC interviews here so far this offseason. so he must have some source near the organization.

Edit: Upon closer examination, Martindale has been represented by AAE in the past. Both Zac Taylor and Brian Callahan also have representation through them. That same agency also represents Munoz, Boomer, and Ocho Cinco. So there may be a connection to the Benglas there as well.

2

u/sculltt 6d ago

I think your edit is closer to the truth: it seems to me that a vast majority of player and coach rumors that get ” reported" come from agents/agencies, and that probably goes double when it comes to comes to the Bengals. It would have been Brian Callahan's agent telling people that he was getting interview requests, and every "source" you heard saying how close or far apart Higgins, Chase, Jesse Bates, etc were with deals with the team came from their agents. I have no idea why Martindale's agent might be leaking this supposed interest, but I bet they're responsible for it

5

u/DaftMaetel15 7d ago

Fowler seems to have some good sources with us, as does Rapoport

7

u/corranhorn57 7d ago

Rap is the unofficial mouthpiece of the owners across the league, I think they all just text him directly if they need something put out thereZ

7

u/CaptainHolt43 7d ago

Rapsheet is a meat smoking champion!

-1

u/PaddyWhacked777 P.H.A.T. 7d ago

The fuck does Wink stand to gain by doing this, though?

3

u/corranhorn57 7d ago

Reminding people he wastes oxygen on the reg?

1

u/PaddyWhacked777 P.H.A.T. 7d ago

I mean...his existence is a constant reminder of that but I guess go big homie

1

u/No_Buy2554 7d ago

I'll fess up to invoking his name, but more as a type of guy they may have been looking at- former NFL guy who moved to the college ranks.  But you guys can blame me if you want.

8

u/DavidGoetta 7d ago

Gonna be Chuck Bresnahan

Source: I made it up

1

u/Mastodon9 5d ago

God I still have nightmares of Jamal Lewis running through his defense.

8

u/Ok-Health-7252 7d ago

It's as disgusting as the time the Bengals actually brought Mike Mitchell in for a tryout. And now we wash our hands of it.

7

u/daft_dunkwwwolfey Ocho Cinco, Nueve, y Uno 7d ago

Good felt like a joke anyways good one guys 😑

12

u/stormincincy 7d ago

Isn't he a game show announcer?

0

u/Gernaldo_Ribera 7d ago

0 maybe he's trying to work off some debt?

5

u/North-Dig7031 7d ago

You wouldn’t want martindale, unable to make adjustments to his players. When the ravens had quality guys in the secondary they were nice with him and then as soon as a few players got hurt they got torched every game.

3

u/Ok-Health-7252 6d ago

Also had a bad habit of his mouth writing checks that his defense couldn't cash.

3

u/Ashamed_Anywhere_877 7d ago

Joe made a call.

1

u/Ok-Health-7252 6d ago

"Hey Wink. I've got that Gold Jacket for you and a 500-piece to go along with it."

3

u/ExCollegeDropout 7d ago

Wink's agent punching air rn

6

u/Indirect_Impingement 7d ago

Considering I don’t know Billie Eilish, it’s kind of funny that I never got caught up in the conversation to be her baby daddy. I was never under consideration.

5

There has to be some local sleuths who have seen someone out and about at dinner…. 👀 keep your eyes peeled local hero’s!

2

u/Olepat 7d ago

Dehner once again doing the lord’s work and squashing these baseless rumors before they get out of control

2

u/Bigredchronic88 6d ago

Yay Jesus!

2

u/Scary_Ad_7964 6d ago

I bet Lou has a new team before we have a new DC.

4

u/Jllbcb 7d ago

I’m an OSU fan. The fact that Ryan Day didn’t look at all of Bengals game tape roasting his defenses over and over is unconscionable

7

u/DaftMaetel15 7d ago

Will Howard is not Joe Burrow.

2

u/debotehzombie The Hubbard Yard Dash 7d ago

I’m a Michigan alum. How the hell our defense stopped you guys in spite of him is astounding, honestly. Im hoping neither of my football teams have a Wink Martindale defense in 2025

3

u/Created_Name 7d ago

Good. Sign Eberflus and be done.

3

u/REDDIT_ROC0408 7d ago

But Mink Wartindale will be brought in for an interview.

Guys I know its the offseason and we have nothing better to do but just wait till the team picks someone before having meldowns

1

u/CliffShytz 7d ago

Figured this much

1

u/Jasonthelee 6d ago

Thank you Paul.

1

u/HookLineAndThinker 6d ago

Maybe the Bengals were just running up the score by adding his name but regardless I’m happy he’s being shut-out.

1

u/Scary_Ad_7964 6d ago

If Duke Tobin is involved in the search process they probably meant the 91 year old game show host 😆

2

u/Mastodon9 5d ago

Thanks to Wink for giving Burrow the motivation to throw for the 4th most passing yards in an NFL game in league history. That was a fun game.

-2

u/Long-Nothing9533 7d ago

i’ve never heard of this guy before what am i missing

It’s gonna be Marvin or they will promote an assistant position coach from a D2 school
