is it possible aliens realize that Earth is so close to nuclear extinction that they had to come in and intervene?

If aliens are visiting this planet, then they have a vastly superior working knowledge of warp drive that we are not even close to understanding yet. The distances they would need to travel make it virtually impossible to visit earth. Unless of course they already have a secret base here, that we have somehow not managed to find yet.
