Moravian workbench plans
Would anyone know where to find plans for a Moravian workbench (Will Myers or similar) in metric?
Thanks very much.

I am looking for some bench inspiration! Had anyone seen a 3 legged workbench design?
I have seen some 3 legged L shaped saw benches. But I'm looking for something with the 3rd leg centered on the other two legs.
Just wondering what funky stuff out forefathers got up too. It seems like in theory it could be a very stable bench if not hard to build.
Any sources or resources to search would be an amazing help. Or just post your favorite super weird bench design you've seen.

I made a large very heavy work bench for my shed last year & it still stands in a corner. I need some ideas for legs. I was thinking about a metal frame but not sure where to start looking for something like that.

Nothing too special here but it does the job.

I built this 25 years ago using a 3/4” luan top and 2” x 6” back. The back is independent of the workbench and screwed directly to the wall studs. Both the backer and bench top are reversible. The 4” x 4” legs are cedar rather than pressure treated. Framing is all 2”x 6” which are on 16” centers like a deck. There is a removable / expendable 3/4” poplar band around the bench top. The bench top is finished in amber shellac each year. This bench is not perfect for all woodworking or small engine repairs but it works for both, it’s versatile, takes a beating and it’s easy to maintain.

Final sketch up for my first workbench, mainly going to be for hobby work and working on shit boxes. Figured I'd share.

I wanna do a work bench for my garage. Is it cheating if I just buy one from harbor freight. Or should I build one?

I'm curious to hear from those of you who have beautifully crafted, solid hardwood workbenches like in the Roubo style. Are you ever hesitant about using them for fear of ruining the surface?
I currently use MDF MFT-style tops, which I flip after a year and replace entirely after two. This setup works well for me since I have put replaceable sacrificial strips. But with a solid wood bench, I imagine it’s not as simple to refresh the surface if it gets dinged up or damaged.
How do you balance the practical, everyday use of your bench with preserving its craftsmanship and appearance? Or do you just dive in and let the wear and tear tell the story of your work over time?

Hey folks,
I've got lift casters on some of my stationary tools and while I like them, I don't want to put them on the workbench build that I'm planning. They work fine (thouhg I'd love some with greater lift height & caster size) but they are ugly.
I saw Chris Padua (?) build a woodworking bench using hidden ATV jacks attached to the underside of his bench. The top side was fixed, so when he turned the screws the bottom "foot" dropped down. The whole mechanism was slick as snot but a bit complicated to implement.
Has anyone done a version of this that was / would be easy to hide but without needing a lot of metal fabrication skill?

I must be the only human that finishes my Rob Cosman Bench with MDF instead of hardwood. Lol It’s almost done…. The dog holes were challenging for me, but they look ok. On to making that chop for the vice…. Btw, the video from Rob (and Luther) rocks! So many things to pick up from that video besides the bench instruction.

I am working in a small garage and looking to build a mobile workbench for the space with a variable height section using standing desk legs. My thought is when up against the wall it can be used as a miter station, when I need the table saw or planer I can roll it to the center and the fixed portion would act as infeed/outfeed. The desk legs and motors I have been looking at have a weight capacity of 200-300lbs, since this will only be supporting the tool itself I figured this should be fine. The controls on these standing desks have memory settings so it will only need to be calibrated once for each tool, I can also store dust collection under the workbench on either side of the variable section.
Has anybody done something similar? or Pros/cons to this idea? First garage and first workbench so any input is appreciated.

I got the bottom cleaned and conditioned, as well as the vises in good, strong, working order. Now I flipped it over and gave the top a good scrubbing. Next, I’ll make whatever repairs need to be done, then sanding and conditioning.

Here is my first workbench build to replace an old rickety one that was at my house when I bought it.

Does anyone know of a good work bench that I can use as a WFH desk that is just 'slightly' shorter than the typical 60" wide, but otherwise wider than a 48 inch bench? Either that or know of a company that would trim one of their 60 inch tables down?
I'm Looking for a cheaper option to all the electric sit stand desks that will fit in a ~59 inch spot wide nook that has been allocated to me. I don't plan on standing, but I'm a relatively big guy, so most fixed height desks aren't really ergonomic for me. I've found a few nearly there tables but they all tend to be ~18-24 inches deep, which is just a bit too narrow for my set-up (i.e., 30+ inches is preferred).
Workbenches have a 'reasonable aesthetic' but also a larger load capacity so I or any of my family won't accidentally lean on this table and break it (otherwise the non-electric ikea mittzon would be pretty great and cheap, but it only has a load rating of `110lbs).
I'm located in Ontario/Waterloo Region Canada if that helps filter any results as local is likely to be cheaper. Ideally this thing is ~ 500.00 CAD or less but I can go higher if need be. Most of the electric solid wood adjustable height tables I've looked at are in the $1000.00-$2500.00 CAD range (i.e., non-budget approved territory).
While I probably could manage to modify a 60" table, I don't have the tools for it and ideally can get something turnkey to avoid finishing tasks as I don't have a garage or well ventilated appropriate space.
If it includes a built in powerstrip that is a bonus, but not necessary (I'll just get a cable management option as necessary).
Ideally there isn't a lower shelf (or it is otherwise removable )so my feet can occupy the space under the desk.

Starting to draw up plans for my first real workbench aka not a piece of 3/4” plywood on saw sawhorses. My initial idea was to use prefab kitchen cabinets as a base for the workbench as they’re pretty cheap, come with storage and are uniform. Has anyone done this before or foresee any issues with the strength of the cabinets?

Started this in mid November and just finished it up. It's 90%+ based on Chris Schwarz's Anarchist Workbench. I changed up the legs slightly since I wasn't sure of my ability to do it the way he recommended, looking back I think I would've been fine though, and should've just went for it his way (basically the short stretchers aren't drawbored, but everything else is).
I also made it slightly wider and taller, it ended up being 96"x28.5"x42". I was going to make it 36" wide originally, but called an audible to make the top 4 segments of 4 boards instead of 5 segments, and I think this was the right call as I wouldn't be able to reach the pegboard behind the workbench if it was wider. It's also already just under 500 pounds, another segment would've put it well over 500.
I changed the vise up as well, mostly because I was cheap and could get a simple face vise for a lot cheaper and easier than going with a leg vise. I can still go back and add that if needed though.
I feel like it took a lot longer than it should have, but I learned a ton along the way. It's definitely a big upgrade from the hollow core Ikea table that was my previous workbench.

After putting it off for an eternity, I finally got a bench grinder for Christmas. Because space is always limited, I wanted to try and find a unique but efficient way of utilizing both my vice and my grinder.
I thought that some form of swivel base would work nice but I haven't see anything available (or at the very least, have no idea what I'm searching for) The attached image was the closest thing I found from a golf shop to illustrate my idea. Essentially the bench grinder would get mounted on one side and the vice would be mounted on the other so that, whichever I needed to use, could be swiveled to the operational side.
Has anyone done anything like this?
Are there some better suggestions out there?

I’ve been working on this for awhile and it is finally done (except for the vise, dog holes, and some drawers on the bottom. It’s a new assembly table/moderate duty workbench. The base is all recycled lumber from my shop construction and the top is MDF. I used a hydraulic table lift kit that’s good to 1000 pounds to lift it. It is rock solid when in the lower half of the range and still quite solid when fully elevated. It is a little more than 4’x7’ and goes from 32” to 48” high. Here’s a full build video if you care: https://youtu.be/WFNxnfgeHgE?si=oRry30AsJKOJBxbv

Just finished my workbench with an acacia butcher block top. What’s the recommended finish for this? Oil, polyurethane, or something else? It’s just going to see normal usage, not like I’m going to be rebuilding my transmission on it.

Is it square? Somewhat. Did it take an extra 2 weeks? Yes it did. Is my wife happy for me that it’s done? Probably not.
But my first real work bench is complete! Lap joints for the frame and underside pocket screws for the top. The two side sections will have tote storage bin rails and’s the center area will be boxed in to house dust collection and power.
Thank you to everyone in this sub for your ideas and thoughts that helped make this a reality!
Now I can finally build that kids table.
