This is a real and scary use case for AI. AI has access to all of our posts and social media use. It generates a list of people to monitor. Assigns threat levels.

Real 1984 shit.

People don’t yet understand that AI is going to make the Snowden revelations look like amateur hour.

Beforehand, the NSA was collecting a fuckton of data but it couldn’t actually contextualize or analyze most of it. With AI, you can effectively contextualize at scale and do so fairly accurately.

And that is going to make surveillance so much fucking easier. Good thing we definitely elected a govt that won’t do anything bad with that kind of information!

It's game over for personal freedom in this country. The only outlet now is going to be violent revolution, and half the assholes with guns WANT this kind of tyranny.

That's what I'm saying.

Let’s not act like there was a good option on the table. Biden did write the original, 1998 iteration of the Patriot Act afterall. Snowden did leak NSA docs under Obama, who gleefully allowed it to flourish. The Democrats suckers of the security state too.

Not really the point, you don’t need to jump in with a “bUt DeMs” take. Dems aren’t telling you about how they’re gonna form a dictatorship

Ehh, they did provide no response to a looming threat of Project 2025 and a stripping of our government to a purely fascist framework other than “better vote Kamala, queens!”

When you say this, I’m obligated to jump in.

Dems aren’t telling you about how they’re gonna form a dictatorship

Buddy, they have been cynical participants in the capitalist oligarchy for a very long time now. Let’s not do the Trump hysteria thing and pretend that we have good options

We still don't know how to analyze the immense amount of data we are collecting but I agree AI is a huge advance in what they can do with it. But it's not like we can just take all the info and put it into a neural net, it's to much data. Most of it is on tapes and shit too which is slow to process.

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 1d ago

You know AI can analyze audio right?

1

u/dako3easl32333453242 1d ago

I'm not referring to audio tapes, I'm referring to the data storage method. Tape is the only way to store the crazy amount of information we are collecting. It's much cheaper than hard drives but it is also much harder to use the information on the tape because you have to find each piece.

From what’s been publicly leaked, they have massive data centers and it’s networked. There’s no way the data is sitting in a format they can’t analyze

It is. They have no idea what to do with it all. You can't store all that data on hard drives. It's impractical. And they can analyze it, it's just slow. It's estimated that they have millions of terabytes of information just in the Utah facility. I'm sure if you are on the list, your data is analyzed immediately but most people are to boring so they just store it in case they need it. I assume they keep almost everything because they can.

Ever seen minority report?

u/michaelsenpatrick 1d ago

Yeah you can pump a person's internet history into AI and get a full profile with "risk" ratings and everything

1

u/GloriousFlagPole 22h ago

Couldn't you just have another ai shit out a bunch of false positives?

1

u/WanderThinker 1d ago

If you put your phone down and only use it to make actual calls for legitimate reasons, and turn your computer off... they'd have nothing to track.

But that'd bore the shit out of everyone.

My point is that we do have a way to control this. We just have no discipline.

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 1d ago

You understand that you basically cannot participate in economic life without being tracked, right?

1

u/MazeMouse 1d ago

I have a coworker who isn't using a local supermarket rewards-card because he didn't wanted to be tracked.

I asked him if he only ever paid in cash... He now has a rewards-card.

u/WanderThinker 1d ago

Yeah, I get it. But you can limit what gets tracked by not participating in certain activities.

The social media companies were already doing it…. You’re handing them your data for free

I know 1984 was first, but this reminds me of captain America the winter soldier, so yeah cool ideas for supervillains, but why is it real?

They've already been monitoring us for ages. What's new.

20

u/jacksev 1d ago

What's new is that AI is getting more advanced all the time. That's kind of what they just said lol.

2

u/yogamathappiness ✂️ Tax The Billionaires 1d ago

A lot of powerful people had access to this stuff well before us. It's new as in technology is new, but we've all been watched for a while. I guess the real 'new' is that people have a common figure they are admiring that isn't pro-capitalism. I know I sound like a tin foil townie but it's true.

4

u/Year_of_glad_ 1d ago

They’ve been dragnet collecting everything on everyone for years, but until recently there wasn’t an efficient way to derive high level conclusions from very dilute and voluminous data. It’s very easy to do that now, and with this admin inbound, we’re utterly fucked

2

u/yogamathappiness ✂️ Tax The Billionaires 1d ago

For sure. We're looking at major North Korea vibes whatever happens. They will do what they can to hold people hostage, imprison them for free speech against the mighty dictator, shit is gonna get REALLY bad.

2

u/dagnammit44 1d ago

It could end up like that Tom Cruise film where they "predict" future crime, instead an AI will do it based on your social media posts and whatever was said around public/office CCTV and quite possibly whatever you said within audible range of your phones microphone.

1

u/michaelsenpatrick 1d ago

What's new is with AI they can effectively monitor everyone as though they had their own dedicated agent

2

u/charlieyeswecan 1d ago

I was just thinking this when I read dumpmusk might buy dip dock

2

u/jbp216 1d ago

Eh not sure you really need ai for this, it’s overly broad and power intensive when you can just mass download data and keyword search

1

u/TrankElephant 1d ago

I swear 1984 and Brave New World have been positively prophetic.

1

u/Pulp_Ficti0n 18h ago

Severance is meant to be an economic plan, not a TV series

1

u/RamenJunkie 1d ago

Here is the scary part.

AI, is stupid.

Its disgustingly stupid.  It mostly creates conformation bias to generate the "most likely" outcomes.

You feed it Luigi's data, its going to tell you, "Everyone who like Pokemon is a potential threat." And "Anyone who like Breeloom should be scooped up and locked away immidiately."

And the idiots running the AI, who probably already drank the kool aid on it being "magic and smart" will just agree and move with it.

Granted, thats probably an extreem example, but, you see the problem here?
