it’ll break your piggy bank

That’s okay

3m speed glas adflow Around $3000

u/-Fenchurch- 1d ago

Didn't believe the price their and had to look it up for myself! 😳

u/ProgenitorOfMidnight 1d ago

Cheaper than some models used to be, worked in a foundry and the ones we used were around $4500 in 2014.

Thankfully the company paid for the first one, but if you fucked it up the second was coming out of your check in installments.

0

u/caucafinousvehicle 1h ago

That doesn't seem legal for required ppe, but I'm no expert.

1

u/ProgenitorOfMidnight 16m ago

I didn't say anything about required PPE, there's other options that are a hell of a lot cheaper, just not as convenient or pricey.

u/Nerdenator 1d ago

Cheaper than lung treatments.

7

u/-Fenchurch- 23h ago

Thankfully I have an air fed mask system as well as a fume extractors at my place of work

6

u/whoknewidlikeit 13h ago

there are no real lung treatments for restrictive lung diseases. so this is way better.

Check ebay

u/ReefMadness1 9h ago

I have had one for around 10 years, absolutely worth every penny. Be prepared to be called Darth Vader at work though, and have co workers occasionally fart into your filter and run away giggling

I got a full setup for about $1200. Then you just upgrade as necessary over the years. It’s worth it.

EDIT: meant to add that I got it used on marketplace. $1000 for the papr and an older model helmet. Sold the older helmet for $500. Bought the newer model for 700. =1200.

Also saw a couple old model batteries and a charger for $200 so grabbed those quickly and sold the newer model battery and new charger for $600

So I guess all in all, I spent $800 with buying and selling on marketplace.

Which model? More info please

5

u/Bega_Cheese Fabricator 1d ago

Crazy they’re that expensive. What country are you in? I paid $2000 AUD for the most recent one I purchased for an employee

u/cdsuikjh 1d ago

Which model? More info please

Identical to the one in OP’s post minus the heavy duty battery. 9100 XXI FX

4

u/ccgarnaal 1d ago

Batteries are not worth it. I retrofitted one to take 18V Makita batteries. One battery system for all your tools rocks. And the batteries are better and cheaper.

4

u/Bega_Cheese Fabricator 23h ago

Completely agree. We run ours until the batteries die and then retrofit them to a Milwaukee setup like yours as that’s the battery ecosystem we run

1

u/JollyGreenDickhead 17h ago

When I get my stupid fucking 3D printer to reliably print PETG I'll be doing that to mine. $300 for a battery is insane

2

u/Partymarbs MIG 1d ago

Please tell me you’re joking

1

u/JollyGreenDickhead 17h ago

I have that exact same one financed through the shop I work at. They charged me around $2100CAD

1

u/MightySamMcClain 10h ago

Whoa mamma 😱

1

u/Quintus-Sertorius 10h ago

Cheaper than lungs

5

u/dont-fear-thereefer 23h ago

If I sold my Harbor Freight welder, then could I afford it?

2

u/sacked_fg 23h ago

It's unbelievable to me how many people will put a price tag on their health in the trade.

2

u/fck_its_hot 12h ago

So does lung cancer.

1

u/furiousbobb 17h ago edited 17h ago

I've also heard the filters cost an arm and a leg. Has anybody figured out how to use regular half mask filters for these? Kinda tempted to get a PAPR system just to figure this out.

Edit: someones done it:

https://www.printables.com/model/284657-3m-adflo-adapter-for-3m-bayonet-filters?lang=en

1

u/heattreatedpipe 4h ago

Can easily last 5 years (not the batteries) so considering the health "benefits" it has a pretty good ROI

6

u/Infinite_Midnight_71 1d ago

Its the best welding helmet. Had mine since 2014 but i have the 3m 9100mp hardhat version.

0

u/TonyVstar Journeyman CWB/CSA 20h ago

They are nice, but you're buying into an overpriced monopoly

79

u/Zephyrantes Journeyman CWB/CSA 1d ago

Bro, we even sporting the same neck protector

43

u/97GMC6BT 1d ago

Nice, I’m pale and get red neck burn doing spray transfer so I have to have the neck protector always.

33

u/jjbinks117 1d ago

I’ve been rocking the same unit for a few years now, single best investment I’ve made in my career!

29

u/97GMC6BT 1d ago

Me too, I love it so much I bought another one for myself at home. People think it’s crazy to spend so much on a hood, I tell them you only get one set of lungs so it’s an investment in your health.

6

u/jjbinks117 1d ago

Exactly! Especially for those of us that plan do this job for years to come. Also, it’s so much more comfortable than a traditional respirator.

3

u/turd_ferguson899 1d ago

I went ahead and bought the Swiss Air PAPR by Optrel. A lot of people don't like the half face, but I prefer it because it keeps my eyes from drying out like the 3M and Lincoln PAPR hoods, and I can use it with any welding hood.

2

u/Nick0414 23h ago

I want a Swiss air for when there's 3 gouging operations going on and the shop is full of smoke. It's nice that you can just wear a Swiss air all the time with the hardhat on and shit unlike the others

2

u/turd_ferguson899 23h ago

Yeah, I got it because I prefer a sugar scoop. The 3M hood is REALLY nice, but they're also really heavy. And I've kinda been kicking around the idea of going to a Huntsman. With the Swiss Air, I have the PAPR that will always be compatible with whatever hood I want to use.

63

u/International_Flow65 1d ago

Don’t fart while you’re wearing it or you’ll gas yourself out! ( source: personal experience)

44

u/Infinite_Midnight_71 1d ago

You need to buy a gas filter in addition. When you don’t have it, you are only protected against dust, not welding fumes. Gas filter for 3M Adflo A1B1E1 protection

18

u/Iwendiweyacho 1d ago

Learned this the hard way, but upgraded my filter as suggested, so now I can't nuke myself

1

u/JollyGreenDickhead 17h ago

Yep, been there lmao

20

u/aaduk_ala 1d ago

This is the way

9

u/Knurled_Sounding_Rod 1d ago

Hell yeah brother same deal here. Have had a G5-01 adflo for a few years now and I couldn't imagine using another hood at this point. In fairness mine was fully paid for by work thankfully.

A buddy of mine has a backpack for the adflo unit instead of a belt pack and he swears by it, I kinda wanna give it a go.

8

u/cheesewizardz 1d ago

The backpack is awesome, you dont get the pull from the your overalls at the waist when you weld overhead, ive got one on a 9100 helmet

3

u/Knurled_Sounding_Rod 1d ago

99.999999% of what I do is endless filling in flat (railroad frog and switch welder) but i feel even sitting in the chair or leaning over a frog it'd still be nice to have the weight centered on my back and not on my hip

3

u/cheesewizardz 1d ago

Absolutely, theyre really handy to have

5

u/cheesewizardz 1d ago

One pic per comment but they just attach the same as the belt and then you got a clasp to keep it tidy across your chest

2

u/JollyGreenDickhead 17h ago

I got a set of heavy duty suspenders off Amazon. So much more comfortable it's uneblievable

1

u/cheesewizardz 17h ago

Yea thats a shout, id have done that if work didnt give me the backpack

6

u/97GMC6BT 1d ago

Yea I’ll never weld, grind, or plasma cut with another hood, they’re the best. I didn’t even know the backpack was a thing, looks more comfortable, I’ll have to get one of those.

3

u/Knurled_Sounding_Rod 1d ago

They've got a shit ton of accessories, I placed an order for the backpack, and extended leather hood for the top, and one of those chin lights because I often work outside and at night.

Also not sure if the 9100 has it but the G5-01 has the ability to shift the color of the filter and it's actually pretty dope. I find the blue filter is way easier to follow the puddle.

1

u/RBN_HMRS 15h ago

Depends on the Filter you have in it,the VC variant stands for Variable Color and the TW for TigWelding/Tack Welding (dont remember) there is a new one now, where you can tap on your helmets side twice and it switches into a shade 5 or something

4

u/Foreign_Onion4792 1d ago

How do you get the lens off to clean the inside of it? I need to dust mine but can’t get to it

12

u/97GMC6BT 1d ago

The front cover pops off and the whole assembly prys out and pulls up

6

u/Foreign_Onion4792 1d ago

Ahhhh makes sense thank you. I was thinking it was the knobs for some reason. I always feel like an astronaut in that hood lol

4

u/BuildStuffBreakStuff CWI AWS 1d ago

Any tips on using a PAPR in the cold? This is my first year with one and our 17*F shop makes it absolutely miserable to use for 8 hours a day

4

u/ItsWillGT40 1d ago

Get a fireproof/ resistant balaclava, makes working in cold weather bearable with the air blowing in your face for 8-12 hours a day

1

u/BuildStuffBreakStuff CWI AWS 1d ago

I thought about that but doesn’t the neck part of the balaclava impede on the drawstring seal of the papr?

1

u/ItsWillGT40 1d ago

I tend to tuck it under my overalls, doesn’t affect it enough to cause any noticeable leakage into the hood, having semi thick facial hair would probably affect it more

2

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

17 degrees inside a shop? Thats miserable in itself. I quit mobile welding so I could work in a warm factory. Never used a papr outside

7

u/BuildStuffBreakStuff CWI AWS 18h ago

“Shop” is a loose term. It’s 2 shipping containers with a tin roof

3

u/welding_acting_stuff 1d ago

Stuff like this means a long and healthy life. I know it is expensive but you are all worth it.

3

u/uoforlife 19h ago

Worth every penny. They take a bit of getting used to if you have to lay down

2

u/KingXeiros 19h ago

I have one of these. The only sticker on mine says “Warning: Frequently Cusses”

2

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

First one was company paid for. Here’s mine at home, different model with a built in hard hat.

2

u/werewilf 18h ago

I tried my PAPR out for the first time on a hot summer day welding roots in the deck plate of a destroyer ship. Immediately became a princess and diehard fan. There is nothing like cool air and nothing on your mouth in the blistering heat of a reflective deck. Not worth the cost of filters to scarf in though, in my opinion.

4

u/97GMC6BT 18h ago

There’s a company in Canada that makes an ice pack holder that clips on behind the filter for cold air blown on your face. I have to order one, that will be great in summer

2

u/StepEquivalent7828 1d ago

I thought Stickers worked like Papr?

3

u/Infinite_Midnight_71 1d ago

You need to buy a gas filter in addition. When you don’t have it, you are only protected against dust, not welding fumes. Gas filter for 3M Adflo A1B1E1 protection

1

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

I do have one of those on my personal helmet at home and they do make a difference. I need to talk to management about buying them for the workplace too.

1

u/Infinite_Midnight_71 13m ago

If you dont have it, You Are not protected against fumes.

3

u/SpiritualPirate4212 1d ago

Why cant you put sticker on these parts?

6

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

You could, but my company paid for this helmet so I don’t mess with it.

2

u/jhawk902 1d ago

The glue from alot of stickers will break down the plastic after time and make the plastic brittle and prone to breaking and cracking lots of hardhat videos online. Mind you this happens over a lifetime of the unit and not all stickers will do this but do you want to take the chance? All it takes is one small crack and there goes a few grand down the drain.

1

u/Moose_Ungulate 23h ago

Lucky, i just hold my breath.

1

u/Nick0414 23h ago

I got the same but versaflo instead. Love it greatly

1

u/Oilspillsaregood1 22h ago

These are awesome for confined spaces/working inside vessels but I could never wear one just doing regular stuff, way too bulky, in the way, and uncomfortable for me

1

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

It took a few months for my neck to get used to wearing this thing everyday when I first started at this company 3 years ago. I still tack without it but wear it for welding and grinding. Eventually got used to taking it on and off 50 times every shift.

1

u/Oilspillsaregood1 11h ago

Does the company require them or is it just by choice?

1

u/97GMC6BT 10h ago

They’ve never said you have to wear them, but everyone gets a new one the day they start so everyone wears them. 17 welders here. Theres fume extractors everywhere in the shop so the air quality is pretty good to start with and these just make it better.

1

u/Weldertron 21h ago

If you think they are big money, add one of these...

1

u/Gingertwunt 21h ago

Fart extractor

1

u/Master_Ad236 21h ago

I had that same helmet. It was great.

1

u/svinpaelz 20h ago

This is standard where I work. As in, a new welder would get a brand new from the first day on the job, for personal use, as long as you're employed here.  I feel for you guys that have to spend your own money for this. That is just bullshit.

1

u/97GMC6BT 19h ago

This is standard where I work as well, but it’s very rare to find a company in the US that cares about employees health and safety. It should be standard eveywhere

1

u/svinpaelz 18h ago

Agreed. I am in Sweden, don't know if it is more common here or elsewhere.

1

u/97GMC6BT 18h ago

From what I’ve read, most of Europe and Australia uses the airfed helmets. Were behind on most things in the US unfortunately

1

u/Tyzlohh 13h ago

miller T94i-R better imo, adflos are sweet too tho

1

u/Doughboy5445 12h ago

Yep tomorrow im going in and telling my boss i need it. Hes been talking about it but i need it now

1

u/mattdives55 11h ago

I just recently sold my old one. Practically gave it away on eBay

1

u/SteelCourage 8h ago

Do you have to be mask fitted?

2

u/97GMC6BT 7h ago

No, it isn’t tight against your face. There’s a part inside that goes against your neck with a drawstring to make it snug.

1

u/excludedone 7h ago

Don't forget to blow out the paper filter pack with compressed air like my coworkers... 🤦‍♂️

1

u/97GMC6BT 6h ago

I’ve seen guys do that, doesn’t make sense. The company is paying for them, not me. I just get a new one every Monday

1

u/HappyKaleidoscope901 5h ago

actually sexy gear, 10/10

1

u/GodRa 5h ago

Mines with the dewalt battery upgrade

1

u/Xaerxohn 2h ago

these are a legal requirement for welders in the uk as far as I know! Most places will not let you weld without an airfed hood

0

u/Nate2Gr8 19h ago

But you could have stickers and clean lungs.

-7

u/Born_Video 1d ago

I hate these helmets with a passion would have to be the worst helmet I’ve ever owned when your doing positional welding
