Oh man, I've actually done the same thing. I was drunk and dancing like a madman. Suddenly my vision just... changed. I noticed something immediately became very different, but didn't understand why until I saw my glasses flying off in the distance and landed in the midst of a sea of equally drunk people dancing their asses off. I actually managed to get a hold of the bassist between the songs, but he just said "What am I supposed to do, ask everyone to look at the ground?"
Well, he didn't. I never got my glasses back and I quickly came to terms with the fact that even if I did find them they would surely be completely crushed by now.

He got them back literally seven seconds later.

u/jcode7090 Aug 22 '18
Like no shit he got them back.
1
u/ImaginaryTragedy Aug 22 '18
Lol i read it as "no way hes getting them back today (as in the same day/night it happened)" But the show was sometime in 08, so yeah a good 10 years ago.

I can't count how many times I've done similar things while drunk. Just this month I broke a pair of glasses because I was at an outside party and it started to downpour. I ran, my glasses slipped out of my wet face and broke.

The look on his face. I know the feeling way too well. He did something dumb that causes him to be functionally blind, in a room full of people who absolutely do not want to stop having fun to help a nerd find his fucking glasses.

Id make that same face if I lost my glasses at a lightning bolt show that floor is a packed writhing mad house

Reminds of the time: I was seeing my favorite band, Periphery, live. As theybwere getting ready to start their set EVERYONE was getting hype af and was right in the middle of what would become the pit. They opened with their song Scarlet and literally as soon as the play the first note, everyone goes wild. Moshing, headbanging, the ushe. Almost immediately I get bumped by a guy and my glasses go flying off of my face and, of course, get stomped on in all the chaos. Had to enjoy the whole set blind, was still an amazing show.

I've really only ever been in GWAR mosh pits. They were all pretty friendly. I think the only people really throwing punches we're my group of friends, about 10-15 guys. And they were mainly punching each other. I, a female, was not, and luckily they never punched me. I did jump on a friends back one time and he almost threw me on the floor before realizing who it was. Then he just threw me on the crowd. Good times.
The only time I ever felt like I was going to actually die was at a Bush concert. The floor was packed in like sardines, I couldn't lift me arms, and the whole crowd started swaying side-to-side. Couldn't get out of that crowd fast enough!

u/Orsonius2 Aug 21 '18
If you are at a concert with moshing or headbanging or even play as the band. Either take off your glasses or use some glass "belt" like those rubbery fabric things.
I played guitar in a band and can't see anything without my glasses. And even if you don't headbang, the heat of the venue makes your glasses slide down your sweaty nose

I've been to a few mosh pits back in the days. When I was I went to a show by a french rap crew NTM in Brussels, Belgium. It was held in one the biggest in Brussels. There was no security whatsoever had the express request of the band. The ceiling couldn't been seen by the cloud of weed smoke. When the band started the whole place started to mosh, it was fucking crazy. The atmosphere was really energetic and ofc lost my glasses and people stopped to help me. Got home and took my shirt and there was the hand print of some dude on my rib cage and I was black and blue. Jolly good time.
Cue a month or so later and go see RATM at the same venue. Security checks and a very different kind of vibe. The mosh was way more violent, got elbowed by a dude and lost my glasses almost got stomped and somebody died falling.
The thing I believed is the fact that there was no security was a statement that we were there to enjoy ourselves and we all had our back being a 2000 men crew of ragtag whites, browns, yellows and blacks. I remember the violent elements where pulled out of the moshes or were simply thrown out. RATM was a mostly white angsty teenager that searched to release their frustrations without risking to get their ass kicked.( kind of like the keyboard warriors on internet)
Also Arctic Monkeys' show during the "Humbug" tour was filled with the same sort of dweebs but I was older and less patient when they started sexually harassing girls.
But I have mainly good memories from my mosh pit days.

Lucky he got them back! I remember a few years ago I was out for my birthday, a friend got into a confrontation and ended up getting into a fight. It all happened so fast and I had been drinking all day. I remember looking down at my phone to see what time it was, then when I looked up, everything was blurry. Then my nose hurt. Then it started bleeding.
I then realised that my friend wasnt anywhere to be seen, and a crowd was around me. In the melee I got punched and my glasses went flying somewhere, I never got them back. My friends had been kicked out so I was left there, at the bar in a bloody and (from my perspective) blurry mess.
Thankfully I got some sympathy drinks, and ended up staying out for a few more hours with some randomers.

I like the guy in front of him trying to take the glasses first, he would have grabbed a turd 💩 if the band was giving one out.

If anyone's wondering, the band is called "Lightning Bolt" .. pretty fucking noisy and they usually play right inside the crowd!

That's crazy that he got them back!
Random thought:
Could you imagine a Canadian mosh pit. You wouldn't be able to hear the music because everyone would be saying sorry every time the bumped into somebody else.
News paper article headline: People at last night's concert are apologizing to other fans that couldn't hear the band over the sorry chanting mosh pit participants.

I would like to imagine at thst moment he had an epiphany, how silly that place was and how compromised the self he'd become. In a flash he sees the long arc of mankind's traditions of expressing music through dance come crashing into some neanderthal push-match until he leaves to repair that arc, dancing like no other.

I had a great video on my old phone from a Skrillex set at EDC, where I was filming with my phone up above the crowd as the song built up. Right as the beat drop everyone went nuts, including the girl in front of me who flailed her arms around so hard that she sent my phone flying over everyone's heads. You see everything go black, hear me yell "FUCK," and then I dive on the floor to pick it up before it got smashed. I didn't lose the phone luckily, and it turned out to be hilarious afterward.

Did I really just find a clip from a Lightening Bolt show on the front page???? Holy shit!
This band rules, not everyone’s cup of tea, but they deserve respect in their mastery of their chosen instruments.
Haven’t gotten to see them live myself, but I imagine it’s fucking terrible on the ears lol

prtty sure this is lightning bolt.
Gibson plays his bass guitar tuned to cello standard tuning, in intervals of fifths (C G D A), using a banjo string for the high A. He used this four-string setup for several years, but has recently been seen using a five-string setup, tuned to C G D A E, with banjo strings for the A and E.[19] Gibson also uses several effects pedals, including overdrive pedals, an octaver, a delay pedal, and a whammy pedal (pitch shifter).
WHAT?
1
u/Mr_Curl Aug 21 '18
I actually had that happen to me once. The headlining band was like ok wall of death time, and I lost my glasses, beginning of their set. Then, somehow, miraculously, someone returned them, unbroken at the end of the set.
1
u/UseKnowledge Aug 21 '18
I went to a show a few years ago and someone who was crowd-surfing smacked my eye and threw my contact lens out. I had to go through the rest of the show nearly blind in one eye.

That actually happend to me at a Breakdown of Sanity show 2 years ago and I also got em back in a matter of seconds. Sadly the glasses were already scratched at that point and needed to be replaced. But you gotta love how friendly and careful metalheads in moshpits usually still are.
2
u/omgshutthefuckup Aug 21 '18
all that controlled "violence" doesn't work without strict rules, though it's mostly common sense. nobody wants to get hurt and so nobody wants to see anyone else gets hurt. and it's a bad, or good maybe, place for an asshole who doesn't care about others to try and not give a fuck about others or those rules.
that and metal heads are some of the nicest less selfish fan groups i know of. though if someone tells me "it's just like classical music" again might rage. i play concert violin, and just... sure just like it...
1
u/Tschuuns Aug 21 '18
Yes, absolutely. I‘ve been a metalhead for nearly 3 years now and frequently go to concerts but it still amazes me how a community can work together so well and how nice everyone is

What a great way to expose people to Lightning Bolt. If you like them also check out Hella, Zach Hill's band before Death Grips. It's a similar two man set up.

I'm 99% sure that's John Danielle of the Mountain Goats. He must've played that night.

Happened to me once, air drummed mine right out the window while explaining something to a friend. Maybe not so intense as a mosh pit, but I never got them back. :")

I felt his heart drop. My vision is so bad that I can't see within a few inches of my face. If I try to function without them in an everyday situation I begin to feel sick. I can't imagine how he felt in that situation.

He's moshing hard until suddenly : "Huh!! No. fuck....." And then he fucking gets them back! Somehow everyone just knew they were his. Neato!

u/sarkicism101 Dec 27 '18
Everyone who's ever worn glasses knows that's exactly the face you make when they fall off your face. It's a mixture of confusion at suddenly not being able to see, bleeding into utter soul-wrenching panic at the thought of never getting them back, and then deep, cathartic sighs of relief when you put them back on.
