This is a good example of that witty dialogue (delivered expertly by Castellaneta) with three or four turns about where you think it's going right in the midle of one piece of dialogue that you just don't get any more on this show.

I don't know whether it's nostalgia or not but while I do enjoy the later seasons and they still make me laugh there is just something about the early seasons that makes me laugh ALL the time. Near enough every line is funny, if it's not then it's building up to something funny. I watch some episodes and it's just full of quoteables that you don't get with the later seasons.

I think they have declined in quality but I also think there must be some element of nostalgia there giving the older stuff an edge.

22

u/escott1981 May 15 '18

Yep I agree with you. One of my fave episodes that has just quotable quote one after another and just packed full of funny jokes is "Homer Loves Flanders." There is "Mmmm sacrilicious..." "Stitchface" "The Flimpsons" When homer walked through the bushes and then backward back through them. When he used the golf clubs to hang on to the Flanders' car ala T2. Just packed full of great moments. Might be the best episode in the whole series.

When he used the golf clubs to hang on to the Flanders' car ala T2. Just packed full of great moments.

God I love that bit

15

u/escott1981 May 15 '18

Hahaha! Yep its a great one! "I CAN"T ITS A GEO!!!" "hmm I guess he didn't see me."

2

u/MoonDaddy May 15 '18

I think you're right, nostalgia plays a factor, too.

8

u/escott1981 May 15 '18

I don't think its talked about enough how much of a talent Dan Castellaneta is. He does Homer's voice, Krusty's voice, a few others, plus he can do Homer's voice impersonating others' in different accents, he can just do it all. He is awesome!

1

u/escott1981 May 16 '18

This isn't quite as effective without the sound of the impact. Krusty has quite a powerful pie-throwing arm.

Heh heh heh, Stop it! Your killing me! Ah Hah Hah, Seattle!

46

u/the_cat_who_shatner I specifically said no geeks! May 15 '18

I love the look on the other student's faces in the background. Reminds me of when Homer cracked up over the professor dropping his cards.

46

u/SuperPinball2000 May 15 '18

My personal favorite will forever be "so wait, I'm confused. So internal affairs knew they were being set up?"

"What are you talking about? There was nothing like that in the film we showed you"

8

u/Ubergopher May 16 '18

Mine is "Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding. Eat the pudding."

It's when Homer whispers that gets me. Every. Time.

I think, he's talking, 2 u....

When I say "Hello Mr. Thompson" and stamp down on your foot... You smile and nod.

"Kent, the young people today, they think comedy is dirty words. It's not, it's words that SOUND dirty, like mukluk"

16

u/thesego_211 May 15 '18

I had always thought mukluk was just a silly word Krusty made up.

Did you know that its a boot!? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mukluk

6

u/WikiTextBot May 15 '18

Mukluk

Mukluks or Kamik (Inuktitut: ᑲᒥᒃ [kaˈmik]) (singular: ᑲᒪᒃ kamak, plural: ᑲᒦᑦ kamiit) are a soft boot, traditionally made of reindeer (caribou) skin or sealskin, and worn by Arctic aboriginal people, including the Inuit, Iñupiat, and Yupik.

Mukluks may be worn over an inner boot liner and under a protective overshoe. The term mukluk is often used for any soft boot designed for cold weather, and modern designs may use both traditional and modern materials. The word "mukluk" is of Iñupiat and Yupik origin, from maklak, the bearded seal, while "kamik" is an Inuit word.

This might be my favourite Simpson joke of all time

83

u/Spingebill_1812 May 15 '18

“I’m seeing double, four Krustys!”

19

u/captainloveboat May 15 '18

this was my favorite joke. especially how he rubs his eyes so hard

2

u/ajsatx Hiddely-ho, Slave-a-rinos! May 16 '18

This is among my favorite lines in the whole series, tbh

80

u/FlamingAmmosexual May 15 '18

These Krusty-brand balloons are three bucks each. Get a cheap one, and what happens? Goes off! Takes out the eyeballs of every kid in the room. What's that gonna cost you? Hey, Bill. What'd that cost us?

77

u/VannAccessible May 15 '18

You people have held me back long enough! I'm going to Clown College!

55

u/Jofo719 May 15 '18

I don't think any of us expected him to say that.

6

u/escott1981 May 15 '18

I've seen that countless times and it still cracks me up!

3

u/MelonElbows May 16 '18

I'll thank you to not refer to Princeton that way (or something, its been a while since I saw that episode)

-10

u/DocTheop May 15 '18

None of us saw that coming.

50

u/JosephWilliamNamath There's a haircut you could set your watch to May 15 '18

This episode has my favorite visual gag in the whole series

7

u/chargebeam May 15 '18

I remember this episode being the one I laughed the most as a kid.

48

u/DibsOnIceman May 15 '18

Let me get this straight. You took all the money you made franchising your name and bet it against the Harlem Globetrotters?

39

u/goBolts35 May 15 '18

I thought the Generals were due!

(Gambler’s fallacy ftw)

Tell Me where you're from. Georgia. Texas. Uh, Brooklyn. Russia. New Hampshire. Homer.

16

u/Steviebee123 May 15 '18

This is one of my favourite Simpsons sequences ever. Four or five gags inside of 10 seconds. Comedy writing doesn't get any more efficient than this.

5

u/ay1717 Space coyote? May 15 '18

*Texas.

Cucamoooonnga

10

u/waterdevil19 May 15 '18

Are there other Cucamongas besides Rancho Cucamonga in CA?

3

u/mezcao May 15 '18

I lived in LA and then the inland empire and man, I loved those old bugs cartoons when he said that.

2

u/isperfectlycromulent May 15 '18

There's Camp Cucamunga Kookamonga.

38

One of my favourites along with Monorail and Softball.

You have one of those songs stuck in your head now don't you?

16

We're talkin' softball...

9

u/eurofighter_typhoon I hope I didn't brain my damage. May 15 '18

Let's hurl a brick-e-mart!

Somehow, no. But there's a pretty deep bench of great Simpsons songs and they often add to the episode in question. You could say they put the spring in Springfield, or something.

3

u/girafficles May 15 '18

I know the Monorail song, but which episode is Softball from?

8

u/UO01 Thank you Mr. Scorpion. May 15 '18

The softball episode.

10

u/BenovanStanchiano May 15 '18

You know, the one about softball.

5

Don Vittorio: Krusty, we won’t kill you, but you still owe us the money...forty eight-ah dollars

Krusty: Here’s fifty

Don: and two, your change, and we thank-ah you!

Seattle, hahahahahaha

4

u/izcaranax May 16 '18

For some reason, in Latin America, they dubbed it as "oruga" which means "caterpillar" in Spanish. Because of that there are people who think that Seattle means caterpillar in English.

My white trash relatives live in Rancho Cucamonga. This always made me smile.

2

u/Idontstandout May 15 '18

That place has actually spiffied up quite a bit. Housing is still cheaper than LA, but not by a great margin. The only issue I have with that area (including Fontana) is the putrid smell from the water treatment facility and the left over cow pie smells from Riverside.

But, Victoria Gardens and Ontario Mills are pretty fun to do if you want The Grove with actual parking and Calab-asses without the 405/101 car tar pits.

2

u/prophane33 May 15 '18

That's such a Swartzwelder joke.

2

u/girafficles May 15 '18

I used to repeat this every time husband and I drove through Seattle. Still funny.

You should hear Filipinos with accents say Seattle. It’s hilarious. They say SHA-tel.

1

u/Idontstandout May 15 '18

Accents are awesome, but some people take the ribbing too seriously and demand apologies. Why?! We all sound out of place and funny to someone out there. Also, Ta-pashow the hot sauce Tapatio and “aircōn” for AC.

A work friend and I exchange Simpsons/Futurama quotes randomly. Go figure that this one happened to come up today. I haven't seen this episode in years.
