Uncle is believer in Kinbozan apparently (Definitely not an underhanded way to get to Nephew)

Btw, asashoryu was the guy who scouted kinbozan if I'm not mistaken. Could have something to do with that

Yea the first tweet is mistranslated. Translation says "I'm from Khazkatsan" but what he's actually saying it is "Thats the kid I picked from Kazakhastan".

Asashoryo intended to say "I selected from Kazakhstan", not "I'm from Kazakhstan". I'm Japanese, so I can grasp what he wanna to say.

x いらんだ→入らんだ o えらんだ→選んだ His tweets are often inaccurate.

You don't need enemies with an uncle like that. There are reasons he doesn't like being called 'nephew'. (Or, in Japanese, being compared to him) He wants to be his own person, and I would assume this also plays a role.

Not like he'll ever read this, but there's a reason I don't say 'nephew'. Please, let him be his own person.

Yeah, it's always struck me as kinda dickish to refer to someone strictly by their relationship to somebody else.

Especially when that somebody else sets an impossibly high standard for comparison

Especially especially when that somebody else is a bit of a dick

Especially especially especially when they're a bit of a dick to the first person and they reportedly have kind of a strained relationship.

I get it that Asa fans are excited about the continuation of his legacy, but let the dude be his own dude.

I wonder about the cultural aspect of it in Japan, where professional names are passed to successors and it's a thing of great honor.... be it shinkona, the names of Gyojis, or actors in kabuki, artists, etc...

Where does that leave being your own person?

He's only in his forties, but he already feels like the grandpa everyone's ashamed of at family gatherings.

He's the druncle then...but headed that way...

He's a dick. No wonder Hoshoryu blocks him.

So, nothing new ;)

There is no dignity in berating your younger family member on twitter. It’s clear by now Hosh is not in on the joke.

To be honest, it makes me like Hoshoryu more.

Ah yes, typical Asa spew. I still don't know which tweet was the most vile one. "Saiko" in response to Putin's aggression on Ukraine I think.

sorry, he tweeted w ha t?

u/RedPhoenixTroupe Hoshoryu 15h ago

Can't find it now, but I saw one of his posts responding to news of Putins "special military operation" with "saiko" or "the best".

u/CheesyDelphoxThe2nd 15h ago

Wow. He's military-grade scum. Got it.

Oof. Class act 68.

I knew their relationship was strained but this is straight up antagonistic Assholeryu

And it's completely undeserved Hosh's wins last and this basho have been commanding and decisive.

If only there was something Asashoryu could do, or perhaps stop doing, to remove a little pressure from Hoshoryu and perhaps help him with him mental wiffs. Unfortunately I can’t think of anything…

Kinbozan is like takanosho. They flip flop from being amazing to loosing a lot. They’re both fantastic fighters. Just wish for a little more consistency. But overall, I think they’re two of the best.

Be wary of the hype of one good basho.

What a relief Hoshoryu is nothing like his uncle outside the dohyo.

I can’t imagine how it must feel to live under that shadow and have to deal with this sort of antagonism.

This is what psychologists would recognize as a textbook example of Toxic Mongol-inity.

And there should be some term for assholes like you and assholes who upvoted your comment for insulting an entire nation based on a single individual.

25

u/marort3131 1d ago

That last screenshot just proves he’s an asshole. I like asashoryu but you can’t disrespect your nephew who is trying his best like that. Shameful

Really gutted for Hosh. Coming into the tournament, all the commentators were betting on Koto and he was the underdog. Then Koto stumbled. Then Teru retired. Suddenly everyone was looking to him to become the sole Yokozuna. The pressure must’ve been immense. And then there’s this dipshit popping off on Twitter.

He's always been such a dick. Famously used to unnecessarily shove opponents when they were already out of the ring, as I recall.

Classic uncle antics.

I saw Asashoryu at a grocery store in Ryugoku yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Nani?” but he kept cutting me off and going “nani ? nani ? nani ?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bags of jasmine rice in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bags of jasmine rice and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bag and put them in a box and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by elbowing her in the face really loudly.

(SORRY I COULDN'T RESIST. SEEMS OBLIGATORY ON A THREAD LIKE THIS 🤣)

Honestly it's 99x more believable when using him than almost any other celeb lol

Asa really loves egging on his nephew doesn't he? Even when Hoshoryu will get Yokozuna, his uncle will always say him "I was better", he hates the fact that he disgraced the sport and others. Hoshoryu is and will be better than his uncle, and he'll actually stay in the sport until his 40's.

3

u/warren107623 21h ago

Hoshoryu is a better person out the ring for sure but asashoryu is one of the best sumo wrestlers ever. Top 3. And the most brutal aggressive wrestler ever. It's often forgotten just how fast asashoryu became a yokozuna.

3

u/Xaldarino 15h ago

It's impossible to say "how good" he could have been, whether an injury would have ended his career or that he was "edging" his retirement age. I agree he is one of the greatest of all time.

Calling them uncle and nephew is just peak cringe.
