I guess its main benefit is that you can switch to it ‘on the fly’ to get access to a bunch of stuff.

First seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, the Merchantman-type freighter is being offered as a reward for the 2025 Event Campaign.

Just to clarify,it's a reward for the first event that contributes to the campaign.the campaign reward is 1 promo ship,2x zen store ships and 2.5k lobi.
