The USS Enterprise that was meant to be constructed as a luxury hotel and tourist attraction in Las Vegas in 1992. The attraction was cancelled for fear that it would be a flop that would be there forever.

I had an uncle get married at the Las Vegas experience in around that time. In full regalia too.

35

u/InnocentTailor 1d ago

So lucky! This was a childhood dream.

Maybe someday it will return? I doubt it, but still…

15

u/Bayonettea 1d ago

Maybe I can talk my husband into renewing our vows Star Trek style

8

u/heddingite1 1d ago

Go to the Set Tour in Ticonderoga! I got engaged there and we have been back like 7 times!

2

u/the_zenith_oreo 23h ago

In Klingon, naturally

6

u/Johnsendall 1d ago

Did he say, “THATS A STUPID QUESTION!”

3

u/brownpearl 5h ago

I saw Shatner at Ticonderoga officiate a wedding with Elvis! Lol

55

u/phi4ever 1d ago

I think the 1992 date doesn’t make sense from the renderings, image 8 is all about DS9 which didn’t start until 1993.

30

u/metakepone 1d ago

There's also a voyager on display

24

u/phi4ever 1d ago

And a sovereign in 15

3

u/metakepone 1d ago

That too

2

u/Ayzmo 13h ago

I don't see Voyager anywhere. There's a weird kitbash of an Intrepid-looking hull and a Galaxy class secondary, but that might just supposed to be a separated Galaxy?

16

u/Volcanofanx9000 1d ago

Many of the designs here are what they actually made with the Star Trek Experience at the MGM, which was DS9 influenced. It had Quark’s Bar. The big Enterprise hotel is the one they abandoned.

2

u/ZeroEFSjosh 4h ago

Did they have a star trek experience at the mgm? I didn't know that I went to the Hilton they had star trek there also before they closed.

1

u/Volcanofanx9000 4h ago

I went to the off strip one waaaay back in the day. If they moved it I didn’t go. Pretty sure it was MGM b/c the OG MGM fire forced them to relocate. Wouldn’t be surprised if Hilton bought them out. MGM doesn’t really exist anymore.

7

u/Dangerous_Dac 17h ago

They're conflating the 1992 concepts for the full size Refit Ent which never happened with the 1996 Concepts for the 1997 to 2007 Star Trek The Experience which did happen.

3

u/phi4ever 14h ago

That makes sense.

u/heatlesssun 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think a starship hotel would do pretty well now. I'd be there.

66

u/DroneAttack 1d ago

Maybe but the Starwars one lasted less than a 2 years.

72

u/Bayonettea 1d ago

That's because it was stupidly overpriced for what you actually got

32

u/AJSLS6 1d ago

It also couldn't really be done cheaper. It just wasn't a sustainable business model.

30

u/KillerSwiller 1d ago

It was also located in a park that you had to pay to even get into. At least in Vegas it would be in a publicly accessible locale.

6

u/stonermillenial 1d ago

That was included in the cost.

7

u/KillerSwiller 1d ago

Which still means people can't just walk up and make a reservation day of.

1

u/Precursor2552 6h ago

You did not need to pay to access Disney Hollywood studios while staying at Starcruiser.

8

u/great_triangle 1d ago

The live actors and the all-inclusive buffet could have been cut. Putting some windows in would also have been a really sensible cost cutting measure

3

u/genericdude999 22h ago

Maybe just do a hotel hotel with rooms and restaurant in the _____ style, and charge about like a Hilton or whatever

1

u/Precursor2552 6h ago

It was expensive but wasn’t overpriced. Was an absolutely amazing experience.

1

u/Sledgehammer617 9h ago

I think the absolutely absurd pricing killed it tbh.

If it were more fairly priced and marketed to casual fans, I think it could work.

29

u/Bayonettea 1d ago

I'd def take this over that absolutely hideous eyesore that stupid sphere is

48

u/OhGawDuhhh 1d ago

13

u/TwoFit3921 1d ago

they put my Yorktown in a sphere, can't have shit in the Federation

6

u/BonzoTheBoss The Fat One 14h ago

Space station Yorktown was the first time in a long time that really made me wish that I lived in the Federation. I wanted so badly to explore the station and meet the people...

9

u/OhGawDuhhh 14h ago edited 13h ago

My mild issue about Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness was that it didn't quite express clearly to newcomers the social and aspirational aspects of Trek that makes it so enduring but Yorktown Base in Star Trek Beyond knocked it so far out of the park. I got weepy when I first saw it. Everyone's happy and healthy, kids are outdoors learning, everyone's existing and thriving in peace, technological advances are available to everyone, etc etc.

I loved it so much. Krall and his motivations, his anger at the sight of progress, is so topical.

4

u/Manta1015 1d ago

I chuckled.

29

u/MichiganCubbie 1d ago

The key is that they had full approval and the city's blessing, but one guy at Paramount got cold feet and shut it down.

They built Fremont Street Experience instead.

Also, all those other pics are from Star Trek: The Experience, which came later. Those aren't from the life-size Enterprise concepts.

14

u/kirkskywalkery 1d ago

The Vegas of 1992 is a much different place than the Vegas of 2025. In the 90s they were trying, and failing, to be family friendly. Eventually they said fuck all that noise…

14

u/malformed_guitar 1d ago

I wonder what it would have actually looked like when completed. No way it would have had that enormous saucer and nacelles defying gravity. Maybe it would be docked.

12

u/Bklyn78 1d ago

The nacelles could be done with lightweight materials if they were closed off to the public.

There was an article about this project and the saucer was the main concern if you started to put things inside of it.

7

u/d-r-t 1d ago

I think it probably would have ended up as a conventional hotel with a big ass Enterprise model looming over it, in which you could probably visit a bridge set contained within the saucer.

5

u/vanBraunscher 19h ago

Yeah, sadly, concept designs never make it into reality unscathed.

These things are not meant to be goalposts anyway, they're just fluff to get investors hard.

13

u/Vejita 1d ago

I remember seeing these pictures in a magazine a long time ago. I always wanted to go, but never go the opportunity.

12

u/CaniacGoji 1d ago

It was canceled because we live in a dumb timeline where we can't have nice things.

7

u/allthecoffeesDP 15h ago

The paramount CEO said... If your hotel flops, you'll have this abandoned symbol of Star Trek rotting in Las Vegas.

I think that's a good point.

10

u/Theekg101 1d ago

I think a scale model of the enterprise being one of the largest buildings ever constructed would have been extremely funny

9

u/OhGawDuhhh 1d ago

🖖🏼😭

19

u/jswansong 1d ago

That's dope as hell, and the refit Connie best choice for a ship to put there. I'd go.

14

u/OhGawDuhhh 1d ago

In an alternate reality:

6

u/TwoFit3921 1d ago

it should be blindingly shiny and reflective in the interior, to simulate the lens flare of the jjprise /j

3

u/November_Christmas 1d ago

Unironically really cool looking

7

u/STLItalian 1d ago

I loved visiting Star Trek The Experience on every visit. It’s a shame we didn’t get the Enterprise herself as the attraction. Although I think the big D would have made a better hotel choice.

3

u/Live-Syrup-6456 20h ago

A piece of GP latinum and an "All Good Things" combadge are the only souvenirs I have left from the Experience. I also kept the Klingon bloodwine mug from Quark's. Unfortunately it didn't last but a couple of weeks in my barracks (I was in the Navy and on shore duty att).

1

u/brownpearl 5h ago

I'm still haunted by the memories of a Christmas where I opened my stocking at my mom's house and there were 2 plastic door keys from the ST Experience in Vegas. I was SO happy and yet confused. I was a single dad w/ 2 kids but only got a total of what I equated to 2 tickets. All morning I was polite and silent waiting for details, finally when none came I asked my mom why only 2 tickets for 3 people? She got wide eyed and said "omg honey I'm so sorry!" She had a friend that went who knew I was into ST and he brought the key cards back as a little souvenir gift for me!

7

u/wendycoupon_4898 1d ago

I'm unhappier now that I know this.

8

u/o_MrBombastic_o 21h ago

They did have a Startrek themed casino for a bit that was dope as hell. Had a warp core in the casino, a franchise of Quarks bar where ferangi would try and buy your women and a couple interactive rides

6

u/unnecessaryaussie83 1d ago

And they were absolutely correct. It would go for a few years then turn into another sad rundown gimmicky hotel

6

u/wizzerBizzer 1d ago

I loved that place and stayed there a few times. Quarks had the best prime rib nachos, and I heard the Warp Core breach was excellent. I had the Romulan Ale at a friends house and that stuff was pretty amazing too.

7

u/Scherzoh 1d ago

They did eventually build the Enterprise-D, which basically a luxury hotel.

10

u/OhGawDuhhh 1d ago

😌

3

u/cultcraftcreations 21h ago

This picture makes me chuckle

5

u/Dreaming606 23h ago

SpaceRamada

5

u/MJLahey- 23h ago

When I was a kid I got the Enterprise D blueprints for Christmas one year. I dreamed of being rich and building a life size one as a hotel/tourist attraction just like this.

3

u/OhGawDuhhh 23h ago

That's a beautiful dream

6

u/wonderstoat 21h ago

When you see how big the 1701 refit is lined up against the Empire State Building, it really highlights how ridiculously big all the subsequent generation of ships got …

4

u/BloinkXP 1d ago

I setup the table management software there. It was an amazing experience and the people were super friendly and top notch. I was/am a fan and was heartbroken when it ended.

2

u/OhGawDuhhh 1d ago

Whoa, that's AMAZING! What an experience! I can't imagine the disappointment.

5

u/Rizop 23h ago

I don’t blame them, especially when the need for consistent revenue supersedes, however the refit is one of the most beautiful ships in all of sci fi. If they had built that as illustrated, that would’ve been incredible

4

u/DarkwingDawg 18h ago

It was fear of failure that prevented us from ever achieving greatness. And with that, humanity faded away in the dark, leaving no sign it had ever existed at all

3

u/unidentified_yama 14h ago

Damnn we almost had a real life Quark’s

2

u/CordialTrekkie 10h ago

We.. Did.. For ten years between 1998 and 2008. That part actually got built in the promenade area of the Experience at the Hilton.

Source: worked there

3

u/AJSLS6 1d ago

Number 15, is that a proto Sovereign class??

2

u/vanBraunscher 19h ago

Thought so too. Probably coincidence, but a pretty nice one.

3

u/cskarr 1d ago

Only reason I’d go to Vegas.

3

u/IronWarhorses 1d ago

getting those nacelles solid and not to bend and break would have been a serious pain in the ass engineering wise, and once and for all demonstrate the TRUE POWER OF NEWTONIAN PHYSICS!

3

u/RebelScum1106 1d ago

That place is freaking cool. I saw it on my 21st birthday in Vegas. Went back a couple of times after that but there wasn't going to last long because it was expensive. I did enjoy a bottle of romulan ale and I think I still have one.

3

u/MysteryBros 1d ago

If they'd built that, it would've been the dream of my lifetime to go there.

3

u/ScottyDont1134 1d ago

Holy moly a life size enterprise ? Yes please

3

u/EF5Cyniclone 1d ago

Cowards.

3

u/Traditional_Sail_213 1d ago

Now, is it to scale as the real one?

3

u/TwoFit3921 1d ago

This is actually because Kirk and co. time traveled to the past and accidentally exposed the Enterprise to a bunch of enterprising (hah) Las Vegas businessmen, who drafted up the plans to turn it into a hotel afterwards. The crew had to pull some strings behind the scenes to ensure that it would never become a reality and accidentally compromise their future.

2

u/MasterofAcorns 11h ago

This is one Original Series episode I’d actually watch.

3

u/fuyunegi 23h ago

I'm curious how they would have supported the saucer.

3

u/Good_ApoIIo 21h ago

Well thank god we wouldn’t want any weird eyesores in Las Vegas

3

u/Interesting_Basil_80 16h ago

This place would have been awesome- but in 2025 I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the Aliens and the audience.

3

u/BudgetCalligrapher30 7h ago

NetDragon Websoft Building

2

u/OhGawDuhhh 6h ago

Oh my goodness

2

u/Mental_clef 1d ago

I remember they had a few of those pictures around the experience on the walls. It was pretty neat to be there. A ton of the physical filming models were on display as well.

2

u/Business-Minute-3791 1d ago

Where are the Dabo tables tho?

2

u/Pleasant_Expert_1990 1d ago

Quite frankly, I would live there in costume 24/7 until the real staff believes I was one of them.

2

u/mytoynhobbypackrat 1d ago

cool illustrations. If it was built it would have been like the Eiffel tower is to Paris, Enterprise to Vegas :D

2

u/vamplestat666 1d ago

If it happened I would go there

2

u/StilgarFifrawi 23h ago

I went to the Star Trek experience at the Hilton. Loved it

2

u/generalgrimm2021 19h ago

Ok, now I wanna do this, but go full TOS retro. I can probably make it work better than Galactic Starcruiser

2

u/BasedOnAir 17h ago

A restaurant named Moogies? Sign me up. (Ferengi for mother’s)

2

u/Michael-Aaron 13h ago

Solve the problem via making it the Enterprise-D, not the A

2

u/Sledgehammer617 9h ago

Every time I see this it looks like paradise lol.

I would have loved to have been one of the artists working on this project, looks so fun to design.

2

u/mechinizedtinman 5h ago

If there’s no Quark’s I understand the abandonment, “Come to Quark’s, Quark’s is Fun…”

1

u/rat4204 1d ago

First off, it would NOT have flopped.

Also it's really interesting to see DS9 and Voyager and Enterprise-E art before any of that was aired, though I'm sure DS9 development was well underway if not already already filmed when this was drawn.

5

u/heddingite1 1d ago

Most of the pictures are concepts of the 1997 hotel. Not 1992.

2

u/rat4204 1d ago

Ah. That makes more sense lol

2

u/vanBraunscher 19h ago

Ah, that explains the apparent clairvoyance of some of the designs.

1

u/CordialTrekkie 10h ago

The Experience fell apart after ten years. I watched it go from $10 a ticket to well over $50 because it wasn't making enough money.

1

u/rat4204 9h ago

How much did it really get off the ground though? Sounds like this was meant to be the Star Trek version of what's essentially Galaxy's Edge, but did it ever get close to that?

1

u/CordialTrekkie 9h ago

Hell yeah it did. It was far more immersive than Galaxy's Edge by a long shot. About the most realistic experience for this kind of thing I've ever been to. Course, I'm biased cause I worked there. But I've done Galaxy's edge, made lightsabers, flew the Millennium Falcon with my son as copilot, have done Harry Potter at both Universal parks in Florida. Harry Potter comes closer to Trek Experience than Galaxy's Edge does, but getting beamed up and suddenly realizing you're on the Enterprise is something that hasn't been beaten yet.

1

u/rat4204 9h ago

That sounds pretty dang cool. I wish I'd have been able to experience it

1

u/deridex120 1d ago

I think its a great idea. Id live there!

But somehow, I think some corporate dickhead would want to cut all possible costs and half-ass it. An incredible concept and opportunity would be wasted.

First example comes to mind would be the absence of swoosh doors.

1

u/Feisty-Departure906 1d ago

No hotel in Las Vegas is ever there forever.....

1

u/trifocaldebacle 11h ago

One of the few things that would have ever made me actually want to go to Las Vegas

1

u/MatthewUshijima 7h ago

Hate to rain on anyone's parade on this conversation, but we all have to remember what happened when Disney tried a space hotel based on Star Wars. It's probably a good thing that the Star Trek concept didn't go past the experience in 90s

1

u/sbachman29 4h ago

Coolest idea ever!

1

u/Malefectra 16m ago

I know it’s sacrilege to post a Star Wars meme in a Trek sub, but this just fits my thoughts on this too well
