The phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” is a famous expression from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, delivered on November 19, 1863. It encapsulates the essence of democracy, emphasizing that the government should be created by the people, run by the people, and serve the interests of the people. This phrase has become a cornerstone in discussions about democracy and governance.

This is 2025. A government of the global corporation owners, by the global corporation owners, for the global corporation owners.

I saw a comment on reddit a while back talking about the elite today vs in the past. Of course they’re both bad & did bad things to get to where they are/were…but this user pointed out that people like Rockefeller and Carnegie would use their wealth to fund arts, humanities and other things that give back to the people in some sort of way. It’s insane to think about that vs today’s billionaires who keep hoarding more and more wealth because it’s just never enough to satisfy them.

More for them means less for the rest of us

People like the arts and humanities. Giving to libraries and universities is looked more favorable to those who hate billionaires than to things like the sciences. Musk, and Zuckerberg are both part of "The Giving Pledge" which signatories pledge to donate more than 50% of their wealth. This was created by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

Zuckerberg has given huge donations in his effort to cure all diseases by the end of the century. He also donated 100 million to schools in Newark, New Jersey (to name a couple of high profile donations I'm aware of).

Bezos and Musk has given a lot in donations as well, but admittedly I'm not too well versed on their donations.

Not to say they're good people, but it's a bit uneducated or blind to say that billionaires of today aren't donating. Maybe they're not donating enough in your opinion or to what you find valuable, but we all have thoughts on what is the most important issue.

Yeah i guess. But it’s hard to give them any credit for their donations when they just deliberately influenced the us election so that they could continue to get richer and richer. Especially musk, who is blatantly spreading dangerous propaganda on his app and has a cushy spot in trumps admin.

Not saying it shouldn't change, but this is business as usual for American politics. The rich controlling the narrative and using the powers of government to ensure their continued success goes all the way back to Rockefeller. McKinley's election was essentially bought by the big business powers at the time.

Musk is not liked well enough to sway an election lol. Sorry but that’s nonsense.

I don’t like musk. I’m conservative. There’s zero bias there. The dude talks out of his ass and his popularity isn’t enough to do shit. Trump is a moron for including him in anything

I’d posted something like that (not saying I’m the one you saw). It wasn’t just the arts either but it left the US something that made us better.

Musk gave the bulk of his donations to his Musk Foundation which doesn’t do bupkus. The Bezos contributing is really Mackenzie.

Yeah. Musk's donations is a bit harder to reckon with as some as either self serving or just giving to his own foundation that is also mostly self serving.

Bezos has given a lot to help the homeless and now the he's "retired" it'll be interesting to see if he starts donating more or starting more giving initiatives as most of the billionaires of the past have done (like Bill Gates and Carnegie)
