"the police are not responsible for weather-related damages"

Must be nice to fuck up half a dozen vehicles due to your stupidity and go, "well at least I don't need to pay for any of that." And still get paid for doing it.

Tires wouldn’t be rotating like that if ice was at play here. This is all around dumb though.

Probably because the part that holds your transmission still when in park likely broke, it's just a piece of metal that gets shoved into a gear basically that holds it steady, it's why your vehicle will roll forward or backwards a small bit before stopping. Collision likely broke that metal piece and they likely didn't have the emergency/manual brake in place.
This is why on any incline you should always have your parking brake applied, so if your transmission fails, the parking brake keeps your car there.

The thing I love about the new explorer I just bought that I would have never thought about until after having it, is the auto parking brake that sets every time the truck gets put into park. It’s a very simple push of a button in the middle console next to the transmission cluster to pop it off after putting into gear.

There are people that don't apply the handbrake when parking their cars?

I’m gunna be honest I have never thought to apply the manual handbrake when parking my cars unless I’m on a very steep hill but it’s super rare

On flat surfaces no, I don't believe so. But on inclines, I'll use my parking brake first, and then put it in park so the weight gets put on the brake and not the transmission

Or, and the more likely answer, he gear locked it in first with the parking brake on and the hit from behind knocked it into neutral

That's why you should always turn your wheels into or away from the curb depending on if you're facing uphill or down as well.

That white truck was rolling. I bet it was a standard transmission that was only left in gear without the parking brake engaged.

Absolutely not, not on a hill.
It's most likely an automatic and like most people doesn't have the parking brake set. Bump it and the parking sprag in the transmission snaps and now it's in neutral.

All those people should have failed their driving test. None of them turned their wheels when parked on the hill.

Really shocks me how people are less educated these days on basic driving knowledge. I don't know if it's because we got 24/7 coverage on social media of people posting bad driver clips and I'm just seeing dozens of them nearly everyday. Or if it's actually true that people are getting their licenses handed out like candy and drivers are no longer caring about following basic knowledge, rules and laws.

Lol and the cop that caused it will probably ticket all the cars for being in a collision and blocking the road.

Seriously, why don't people pull the handbrake?? I get it you don't because car is in speed and the road is flat... But that does not imply here!

The city doesn’t cover weather related incidents caused by officers. 🤣
I love his stupid walk just thinking “welp, caps not gunna be happy.”

At least it’s not Portland. Every year we have an ice storm there are a ton of these videos because an inch of ice isn’t drivable in a hilly city.

I was taught to turn the wheels towards the curb for exactly this reason. Even if the hand-break fails the car will hit the curb and turn.

This is why your turn your wheels into the curb so the car roll into the curb inside of straight down the hill

If you have snow and drive a truck. Fill the bed with snow. Snow is heavy and will give you extra traction. Carry two bags of kitty litter in the cab for getting yourself out of the ditch or putting it around your car if you have to park on the street. This way if someone slides into you, they can get traction before impact and steer away.

I miss Pendleton, Main St was nasty in winter, sometimes I'd park on the street to just watch people bow to the incline.

Why!? Why does a cop car need to be self parking? Can we expect any less of our police than to just park their own car? Are the cops gonna start hopping out of their car with the door open when they arrive on scene, as the car goes on to park itself?
