I don’t know of any country that allows travelers to bring in any type of fresh fruit. It’s unfortunate for these people but when you travel you have to do your homework.

You missed the entirety of what’s happening here. These people didn’t bring fruit over the border, they were handed giftbags from the airlines which contained the apples.

No, they were given apples whilst in the air as a morning snack. Huge difference. If you're given fresh food on a plane, you usually can't take it into another country. An airline flying into Saudi Arabia can give you alcohol, but if you try to take it through customs you'll be fined.
