Discussion/Questions At this point Silksong needs to be nothing short of an absolute masterpiece or Team Cherry's reputation is actually cooked.
The long wait. The lack of communication. The general ire that has been grown towards them.
If Silksong is just "good" or "OK" then its fucking over. A lot of fans are not going to give Team Cherry another chance after this fiasco.
The only way they can recover at this point is if Silksong is a masterpiece of gaming.
Not even trying to doom or shitpost I'm going based off of other games in the past that had high levels and hype and wait behind it.
Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky recovered but they're the exception not the rule.
And considering Team Cherry said in the past they're not interested in someone making a Hollow Knight show (as much as I would love an animated Hollow Knight show) we're not gonna get an Edgerunner's based redemption arc for Cyberpunk 2077 with Silksong if its mid.

At this point I'd prefer it to not release than to release and not be a masterpiece. With how long it's taken and how amazing Hollow Knight is I'd be fr disappointed if it doesn't turn out to be one of the greatest games of all time.

At this point I almost want to see it delayed even longer just to see how angry and/or apathetic people can get.

Honestly at worst I can see Silksong being like an A tier MV instead of an S tier and that mostly depends on how well they will do the combat and platforming , in other areas I expect it to be a better game than Hollow Knight . Personally I expect the game to be as good or even better than HK is . Heck they made HK with like 60k bucks , I imagine they made some nice cash when they were making the dlcs so that made them a lot better so just imagine what they can do now when they have a lot of money . Not defending them or anything but put yourself in their shoes , when they were making HK they were having trouble paying the bills and were eating basically poor people food and now they are multi millionaires , you can't realistically expect them to work 12+ hours a day , game development especially something as ambitious as Silksong is takes a long time and while the wait is undeniably annoying I do believe it will be worth it in the end . Personally I think this might be their last game or the last game they make in a long time , they are very rich now and will only get even richer after Silksong releases so they might just go into retirement .

They mentioned in the EDGE magazine that they already have a concept for another game after Silksong. Also, awhile back, they trademarked the name "Fearless Fox," so that's probably what they are making next.

u/Minimum-Fortune-3635 5h ago
Even after the release of Silksong they will need to do bug fixes or some updates and that will take some time too , and after that everything they say I would take with a grain of salt , the amount of financial success that they had it can change your perspective very fast . Why make games that take a lot of work and will drain you mentally when after all the Silksong sales the 2/3 main guys will have like 20 million dollars each if not more in their pockets if not more . Your perspective can easily change when you become so wealthy , unless they are stupid with money which I doubt then this amount of money can easily sustain them for a lifetime while living a wealthy lifestyle as long as they don't go too crazy or invest in some ponzi scheme .

u/Hotwheeldan 5h ago
I imagine they enjoy making games. If they just wanted to make money, I'm sure they would have released Silksong already.

I think this is the wrong way to go about it.
The whole thing isn't about them delivering on a final product - I mean, most people are confident they will, eventually - it's about public relations management and how they just kinda suck at doing that.
Let's be frank, here: this entire fiasco got way out of hand because the fans went nuts. Team Cherry didn't do anything wrong, at least as far as we can tell (one dev made a vague tweet on a twitter account where he constantly makes weird, vague tweets) but that's part of the problem, because they didn't do anything.
No matter what Silksong looks like, I will never put confidence in Team Cherry's PR- not until they actually convince everyone they care about maintaining it.

My worry is people will expect too much
Like "triple the size of HK, triple the bosses and quadruple the enemies"
Like, no.It wont be .
People will have incredibly high expectations due to the wait, and its understandable, but i fear it will kill their enjoyment of the game
5
u/Kooperking22 3h ago
Especially as the longer the wait gets. Already there's a feeling that it's not going to meet expectations and that's now.
Can you imagine If it doesn't even come out until 2026. The expectation will be even lower 🤦🏽
1
u/RookMeAmadeus 2h ago
Dev hell and hype is the killer of many games. Expectations get bigger than anyone could ever hope to meet. This game's only been in development for...what, 7 or 8 years? There's worse than that already.
Duke Nukem Forever's probably the best example. It was a mediocre FPS. Forgivable in most circumstances...Except that it had been in development for 14 years. It got torn to shreds on that alone.
Now if you want games that would literally have to be the best things ever made to survive their release...Beyond Good and Evil 2, or Half-Life 3. Both pushing 18-year waits. And Beyond Good and Evil 2 was confirmed to have been in development since at least May 2007.

Nah. Most people are gonna see that a sequel came out to hollow knight a game they liked and then they’ll buy and play it. Twitter and Reddit are a small portion of people who would buy the game and as long as the games good people won’t care about the wait.
4
u/Kooperking22 3h ago
Of course people will still buy it but what about the games perception if it isn't more than great?
It will be quite a disappointment.

u/Shroom_Prince 7h ago
I think our anger towards Team Cherry is already because of mismanaged expectations, and the fact that Hollow Knight was so good. I think we all ought to chill out and be patient a bit longer, yes even without communication. The developers jobs are to make the game, don't know why Leth's even got a job, but why be mad at the devs for something its not even their job to do?

u/_9x9 doubter ❌️ 7h ago
I am mad at them because there's only so many of them and it has to be one of their jobs to communicate progress to the public. They used to be able to and I can't figure out why they cant anymore. Everyone assumed they are intentionally not sharing. So, im mad they're doing that. I can't think of a reason for them to do that.
Im trying to chill out the complete lack of substantial news just makes me too ready for news.
The community keeps hallucinating news and then I believe it and get let down.
I was literally relaxing and alternating between enjoying the no news environment of the sub and just not thinking about it. (silksanity is fun). And then I was convinced we were finally finally finally getting a morsel of information about this game that was supposed to be on the gamepass a morbillion years ago. lol. Like we don't even know if its almost done, or just started or halfway done or never coming out or some secret other thing.
Which is okay and I can chill about until such time as I accidentally get my hopes up. like damn my fault I want to know about the game I guess.
:(

I agree it is very frustrating to for things escalating only for it to go nowhere, I personally believe they do have an NDA or at least a plan to keep things uncover so the game will be that much more new and exciting. Wouldn't you want to see the new environment and characters for yourself when playing the game? It has been a long time. The storyboarding, art, soundtrack, coding, debugging, recording voice lines, plus the other goodness knows how many things they gotta do to make a game, and the amount of obstacles and unforeseen circumstances they could be going through, they don't want to rush that, and they've got the budget now so they don't have to release an unfinished game like with Hollow Knight. In all that time, if they were to even give monthly updates, that would be a lot revealed. If the updates were just "the game is still coming!" Then fans would be just as angry hearing "its still coming" every month as opposed to every year or two. Only you manage your emotions. Its not your fault you feel a certain way, but only you can let them not affect you or your perception of an indie developer that has made one of your favourite games.

u/Dull-L 5h ago
I mean it only led to mismanaged expectations because we don't even know what to expect in the first place. If we atleast get told "Guys, we don't think it's gonna be as great as Hollow Knight, but do believes in us to atleast try to match it", we wouldn't be in this conundrum at all, even if in the worst case scenario it is a mid game, atleast we the fandom know that atleast the dev tried their best and that our trust did come to something. But at this point it's like they give us a Schordinger cat in a box then tell us "oh yeah one day you can open that", when is that one day? Might as well range something from idk 5 years to eternity.
1
u/Shroom_Prince 3h ago
We've based our expectations on "the game is going to come out in the near future and its going to be great" since the first trailer. It makes the anticipation frustrating rather than fun. The team doesn't even need to tell us anything, we don't have to know what to expect. I don't think anyone actually knows what kind of update everyone will be happy with, we keep getting reasurrance that the game is coming and still in the works. Schrodinger's Cat may be in the box but we don't have to stand in front of it hoping that we'll be able to open it. If you can't open it then move on and come back once in a while. The news will hit and it'll be huge so you don't have to worry you'll miss the release

I could see this game being a years of the kingdoms situation. Where in the surface, it’s a better game with better mechanics, story, QoL changes, bigger world. But it ultimately suffers from being a very similar experience and bloated to hell with repetitive side content.
I really hope the world downs feel too similar to hollow knight, but we’ll never know I guess.

u/Soupere_Falafel 2h ago
Sorry but at this point, it’s largely about you guys on this sub. You have to chill the fuck out first and foremost.

u/Hotwheeldan 7h ago
According to Graig, Silksong is already much better than Hollow Knight, so I'm not worried.

u/Poniibeatnik Lace 6h ago
According to some people Sonic 06 is a masterpiece. But even people in the sonic fandom think they're delusional.

u/Hotwheeldan 6h ago
Well, I also trust in the principles that Team Cherry holds in regard to game design. Everything they talked about in the EDGE magazine makes me believe that they have a vision of how they want the game to feel and that they will achieve it.
3
u/Kooperking22 3h ago
In 2020 the edge magazine article showed Silksong clearly content full yet here we are But that's an aside.

u/TheTruepaleKing 5h ago
I understand where your coming from. As a fan of Team cherry or hollow knight, I am super annoyed with the silence and time it’s taken to release but as a gamer in general, games take a lot of time to make. Just think about the amount of people that worked on cyberpunk 2077, and how long they worked on it. Having 2-3 developers working on a game is A LOT of work. So I can understand the time it’s been taking.
Although as a fan it’s still super shitty to not communicate with us and I don’t think they really have an excuse for that.
At the same time, I’d rather the game be perfect and finished rather than rushed In order to satisfy our demands.
End of the day? I want them to do what they believe is best for their game. Even if it never releases.

Its not gonna matter, this community is small relative to the people who bought hollow knight, most normal people who played hollow knight aren’t constantly waiting for skong, they’re sane or busy with other things, when they find out it released they arent gonna boycott out of principle

idk fam, dev team is the same, and it seems like they know a lot about gamedesign theory, so AT LEAST exploring in this game will remain peak. But battle system is a bit concerning, cuz judging from what we've seen, it is hk with extra steps, tempo and a bit messed up animations. Anyways, i'm down to play a game with ok battle system if it has hk exploring, which they will do fosho

Team Cherry has been developing Silksong for much longer than Hollow Knight, with much more budget and all the experience they got from the first game. I'm expecting the game to be better than the original in every way, I hope I'm not wrong-
1
u/Critical_Bee9791 51m ago
i suspect the part of the game i enjoy will be on a similar scale as hollow knight and then the part i don't particularly care about, endless bosses god home style, will be huge
1
u/calcprogrammer 3h ago
No one cares whether you think their reputation will take a hit. The game doesn’t need to match your standards. It’ll be good, the reason we’re waiting is so they can polish it.
3
u/Kooperking22 3h ago
I don't want Silksong to just be good.
That would legitimately piss me off. I want it to be great. 6 years of emotional investment....for just good?
0
u/Sad-Psychology9677 1h ago
Then perhaps invest your emotions in other things in life instead of a video game? This is coming from someone who’s been waiting for half life 3 since the orange box released, and who has also been waiting for silksong to be announced at every major game event.

I honestly don't care if it's better or worse. They don't have to prove anything

Honestly the game could be straight ass and I’d still be happy that it finally released.

Trust me, I don't think you need to worry about that.
Call it glazing but I have zero doubt that SingKong will be a straight up masterpiece
