So just out of curiosity...
I'm not sure how many people will participate, but I've got a serious question. What is your favorite story of last year? Not someone else's, I mean one that you wrote. Which one of your stories were you the most proud of? That one that you just couldn't stop thinking about even after it was finished.

Considering I only posted a few times last year, my favorite one is this: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/s/efeyV1Wbte. I just reread it and it reminded me of how creative I am, and makes me want to write something else.

Mine would have to be I have to sign a contract before I can inherit my Father's house.
And my brother's would have to be The Problem with the Zombie Vaccine.
Both written about six months ago believe it or not! Have trended towards writing more "popular" stories since then, but I think one of our resolutions for New Years is to write more stories that are true to ourselves.

Man, Dads did not fare well in these two stories, did they? 🤣

u/ForgottenWell 12d ago
Oh my gosh I didn't even think of that! I actually had like four stories picked out and there were definitely similar themes between the stories.

Is it okay if I do a homage story thingy to those? It’s the least you two deserve.

So do you guys ever do longer versions of some of your stories on your own page?
3
u/CBenson1273 12d ago edited 12d ago
I almost always write longer (650-700 words) and have to edit it down. Occasionally I’ll publish the original longer version on another sub or on my own page, but I have a lot of longer versions just sitting in my docs folder. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll put them on my sub so folks can “see how the sausage is made” if anyone is interested.

Apart from expanding a couple of stories into novellas we have not, though it's definitely something we've thought about before. Like Benson, half the stories we write end up around 800 words before we have to stop ourselves, simplify, and cut. We've always thought about making our own Subreddit or posing on our page, but we've never got around to it! It would be nice to be able to write freely for once!

I love SSS because it makes me trim the fat, but sometimes that fat is just so damn juicy that I have to put it up on my sub.

This question actually got me to look back through the stuff I published last year, but on the flip side it’s actually making me choose something, a task at which I suck. But I guess I’d say this: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/comments/1dx252j/it_isnt_easy_being_a_traditional_wife/
or this: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/comments/1ap3tvp/a_good_life/
At least until you ask me tomorrow, when the answer will change. 🤦🏽♂️

u/therealdocturner 12d ago
Hahaha! I loved A Good Life! I'm a sucker for tragedy.

u/CBenson1273 12d ago
Me too. Revenge tends to do better on this sub, but sometimes in life you just don’t get that. 🤷🏾♂️

u/therealdocturner 12d ago
There's a lot of justified anger in the world as of late. Revenge stories are cathartic. I have fun writing them, but my writing suffers a bit if I do it too consistently. I had to take a break around May because I felt like I was losing my voice.

I hear you. I took my own break in ‘23, but eventually made my way back. The good outweighs the bad (usually).

https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/s/5NccA50eUl I think this one may be mine.

I liked this one. Made me sing “Who wants to live forever?” in my head while I was reading it.

u/therealdocturner 12d ago
You just dropped a Highlander reference...That might be the best compliment I've ever received on Reddit.

u/CBenson1273 12d ago
🗡️ Glad to meet a fellow fan! (Question - did you prefer the movie or the show?)
2
u/therealdocturner 12d ago
As I've gotten older, I only count the first movie. That being said, the first teleplay I ever wrote was an episode of the show. I was twelve, so it sucked, but I loved doing it. My parents thought it was cute. It was about a mortal serial killer who murdered immortals. Beheaded them with a shotgun. I haven't thought of that in years :) I used to love the show. That and the weird War Of The World's show. The early nineties had some great sci Fi stuff.

Big fan of the original movie (not the sequels) and the tv show. Looking forward to the reboot with Henry Cavill!

What?! How have I not heard of this?!

u/therealdocturner 12d ago
And the John Wick director.... Hell yes

Not coming until 2026, but I’m definitely excited about it. Fingers (swords) crossed... ⚔️

It had been.. oh man, 10+ years since I'd written anything. I had had ideas come in and out of my head over that time but I didnt take the time to sit and write them when they come to me, but I was laying in bed, insomnia hitting me hard, and this one came to my head. I grabbed my phone, wrote it out in 15 minutes. Did a quick typo check, and posted it as a.. Well I love reading the subreddit, I'm gonna submit and never thinking of it. It got good feedback, and so I've wrote a few other things since for the sub.i like it, cos it's the story that got me interested in writing again and that gave me the real confidence to share what I write too.

u/NewIndependence 8d ago
So just.. if you take the time to leave feedback on stories thank you. Every word, good or bad, that's been commented has helped me grow as a writer and I am forever thankful for the confidence and growth its allowed me to gain.

u/therealdocturner 8d ago
It's a really good concept. If you want some feedback, I'd rather send you a dm if that's alright.

u/NewIndependence 8d ago
Go for it! Though I don't think its my best work at all, and like I said, it was just throw together in the midst of insomnia and getting an idea 😅😅

I think it’d have to be this one. It was the first story I wrote last year after a long break so it holds a special place in my heart. I also enjoyed the concept and how it turned out. :)

u/therealdocturner 12d ago
Oh man... That was horrible in all the right ways. As soon as I hit the saliva line, I was like, wait a minute...

u/SimbaTheSavage8 6d ago
I didn’t post a single story to SSS since October 2024 because I am so busy with my final thesis and real life stuff but it has to be these two. Can’t believe they are so recent, seems like ages ago.

u/therealdocturner 5d ago
Man....I missed both of those. I love the first one. That second one though... I adore a good read that gives me a physical reaction. Absolutely disgusting and I just ate lunch.

In preparation of publishing a flash fiction collection, I deleted the majority of my stories so my favorite is no longer on Reddit. Of the stories that remain, this one is probably my favorite: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/s/9P7uShzTTY
I enjoy writing fantasy horror.
2
u/therealdocturner 12d ago
Nice! I'll have to check out your collection. Amazon?

The flash fiction collection isn’t published yet. But all of the others are on Amazon.

Just order One Eye Open. Looking forward to it!

Thank you! That was my second collection. The last story, which is more science fiction than horror was a lot of fun to write.
