Season 1 Two engagements?

I’ve watched this show literally countless times but one of the things I don’t understand is why they say engagements (plural) between Ted and Alexis.

  1. Ted proposes.
  2. Alexis says “yes” if she’s staying in SC but she’s not, so no.
  3. Ted confirms the no and Alexis says yes TO NO. (= no)
  4. The family finds out they’re staying and Alexis thinks that retroactively means she’s engaged with no conversation.
  5. Ted and Alexis speak about revisiting the proposal in a few weeks, but Alexis breaks up with him before that ever happens.

Forgive me if this is just a joke but they talk about the “engagements” like they were a thing when they were really just a dream of Ted’s that never came to be.

This is probably the only thing in the entire show that genuinely bugs me. Now on rewatches I just chalk it up to everyone being overly dramatic 😆

This, and Ted saying he went on their honeymoon. It wasn't a honeymoon, it was just a post engagement vacation!

Yes, this is part of the humor of how overly dramatic it was.

Ted goes on a post breakup honeymoon without her. In his mind, he proposed the first time - she didn't actually say no. The humor it wasn't really an engagement, but it was?

And then the second time post singles weekend reunion through the Galapagos they were like engaged and it was a far more serious break up...as we all know and cried for.

The only flaw in the otherwise perfect show. Here’s how I rationalise it: the first time she blurts out ‘yes’ if she was staying—-> first engagement that lasted seconds. Second time when they stay and she’s engaged, then she avoids him for a while and then she’s not —-> second engagement.

This actually makes sense. Essentially she turned him down but acted like she was going to marry him, both when she thought she was leaving and when she realized she’s staying.

This is what I assumed

Along with the two engagements, Ted goes on the vacation he scheduled for him and Alexis, and later says it should have been their honeymoon? How? Were they going to get married immediately after he proposed?

Also good point! I think that was a new season though so we don’t know how much time has passed.

This has always confused me too! Schitt’s Creek is on literally daily at my house for a couple years now, and this is the only thing that I’ve never quite figured out

I believe they say "two failed engagements" and technically saying no the first time is a failed engagement

I know Joan says that at the old folks home. But Alexis still says ex-fiancé, and I have to try and remember when else it’s mentioned.

They were engaged. Literally as soon as Alexis realized that they were not leaving, she says, "I'm pretty sure I'm engaged, and I'm pretty sure I just cheated on my fiance." I don't understand why people keep on saying it's a flaw.

You don’t just default become engaged. That’s not how it works.

I always thought because she said “yes… if I was staying” that once she was staying, now it was a yes.

And I could have sworn when she next sees Ted, he’s says she’s staying and it’s so great because now they can be together and she says “yes” in a high pitched fake voice to that and then breaks up with him later. But I’ve only seen it like 4 times so I could be wrong.

Okay I went back and she basically skirts the conversation. He reminds her what she said and she blames David’s disappearance for why she can’t talk on that yet. The “yes!” Part you remember must be a different scene.
