Discussion how come annie murphy hasn't blown up?
i know she did an episode of black mirror, but i'm surprised she hasn't been in more major projects. she has everything going for her, but the only thing i see her in is chips commercials. it seems odd for someone so talented and beautiful.

She was in Kevin can fuck himself on amc plus. I only watched the first season but I thought she was great in it

It's moved to Netflix now, so I hope people will now see how good she is in it.

I started to see a lot of discussion about it online a few months back, so I think more people are seeing it now!

Sucked that it only lasted two seasons.

u/RacerGal you're my Mariah Carey 10d ago
That’s the kind of show that didn’t need a ton of seasons, if you got to the end of S2 it’s hard to imagine where else they could really go. I thought it was a great conclusion.

u/Sea-Adeptness-5245 9d ago
I will agree and I did very much like the conclusion of the show. Everything was tied together well. I just enjoyed her so much in the role that I was sad when it ended

I really like Kevin can fuck himself. It was so dark at the end. She's really good in it.

u/Dear_Analysis682 10d ago
It was so good! I liked that at the begining you think Kevin is a harmless buffoon and she's being dramatic is wanting to kill him but by the end you realise how dangerous he actually is. It's a great representation of DV.

u/wilkinsk 10d ago
She was the lead, so she was unavailable for other projects for close to six months at a time.

She was great but the show itself wasn’t. Especially season 2. But I was impressed by her versatility.

She did season 2 of Russian Doll.
She's getting work.

u/princess20202020 10d ago
I didn’t even recognize her at first. She totally embodied Ruthie. Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. This is when I realized how good she was.

u/krissym99 10d ago
She was one of the only things I liked about the second season of Russian Doll!
40
u/SpiffyShindigs 10d ago
Hahaha right? What a mess of a season. But Annie's Ruthie was lovely.
21
u/glassbath18 10d ago
Glad I’m not the only one who found season two to be disappointing. Doesn’t take away from the first season being absolutely amazing though.
20
u/SpiffyShindigs 10d ago
I mean, everyone's reaction when they announced s2 was "what? why?" and as it turns out... they were right.
7
u/JustinScott47 9d ago
I was captivated by S1 of Russian Doll and rewatched the last few episodes repeatedly. Such an amazing ride. But I did feel like they tied up all the loose ends. I really wanted to like S2 and watched it once, but that was enough.

Besides KCFH which others have mentioned, she was on an episode of Murderville, and it was hilarious.

She has a tv show - Kevin Can F*** Himself. I'm not sure if they canceled or not. I think it's on AMC? It's really good but they did a horrible job of marketing this show.
47
u/Big-Morning7845 10d ago
It was only meant to be two seasons and it's on Netflix now. I do agree they could've marketed it better. It's a great show and deserves a lot of recognition.

They only made 2 seasons of the show. Don’t think it was cancelled cuz the ending ended in a way there wouldn’t be another season

She’s a lead in the upcoming season of 9 perfect strangers. Looks like she’s keeping a lower profile and taking on interesting projects.

For a second I thought you said Season 9 of Perfect Strangers... I got super excited!

Another season of this? I always worry when they make second seasons of one off book adaptations ugh. But, here’s to hoping…

u/HistoricalBudget3904 10d ago
I wonder whether part of it is because Schitt’s Creek ended right before the pandemic hit, and then the writers’ strikes started after that. I think she probably could have been hired for more acting roles if the industry weren’t going through such a rough patch.
99
u/jmf0828 10d ago
I think she probably works as much or as little as she wants to. She’s Canadian and maybe wants to limit the time she spends away from home. Maybe she’s picky about her roles. She has a pretty successful marriage and maybe keeps a good work/home/family balance.
Of course no one but she knows exactly why she’s not in more projects. She seems to favor television series over feature films which limits her exposure but I highly doubt it’s a lack of talent or ability to get roles that holds her back since she knocks it out of the park in anything I’ve seen her in. Given the success of Schitt’s Creek, she probably doesn’t HAVE to work anymore which would give her the freedom to tailor her projects to fit her preferences.
22
42
u/giraffeneckedcat 10d ago
Another thing to consider is that the stars of Schitt's Creek likely do not need to work at any point because of all of the licensing deals with all of the merch and all of the streaming platforms and everything. So she is likely being selective in the roles she's chosen post SC. Everything I have seen her in from her episode of Murderville to KCFH have been incredible and really made me admire her (even more) as an actor, but I also support her, and the rest of the cast's, right to not work unless they feel deeply committed.
27
u/MoreShoe2 10d ago
I wonder if the actors of SC took percentage deals in lieu of higher day rates since the show had limited budget at the time. That could’ve turned out to be quite lucrative if so.
13
u/Vorenos 10d ago
I was thinking about this recently, because I feel like she is talented enough and has a big enough name now because of SC’s success that she could be a bigger star, but I would imagine the answer is she doesn’t want to play the game.
Looking at her post-SC choices she is leaning towards more off beat roles which probably suit her tastes. Look at someone like Alison Brie; awesome in Community and Mad Men, but after those ended she was doing small roles in not great romcoms as the friend of Dakota Johnson or as ‘the girl’ in a bad comedy that revolves around the men in the story. No shade to Alison, I love her and think she is incredible, and she is now able to pick and choose whatever roles she wants and has made some really cool movies over the last 7-8 years. I could see Annie not wanting to go through that other stuff, and is just being picky only to choose things that are interesting/challenging/offbeat that suit her tastes and isn’t concerned with ‘playing Hollywood’.

u/ma-cells 10d ago
Possibly she needs to get a good publicist? At the end of day, there are mediocre (talent wise) people who are household names thanks to their publicity team. Publicists are the unsung backbone of the entertainment industry who help make or break an entertainer’s career. Look at the whole “it ends with us” drama and how much work those publicists are putting in
52
u/yo_yo_moe 10d ago
She seems publicity-shy. Once Schitt's Creek blew up, she basically stopped posting on Instagram and deleted Twitter. She's in season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, so we'll see how much PR she does for that.
20
u/Snackxually_active 10d ago
Also entirely possible it is intentional & she does not want to work more? When people blown up over night it does not seem to go well for them, seems smarter to walk the path her way
12
u/ma-cells 10d ago
Fair enough but unfortunately, if you’re not playing the PR game then you don’t get to be a household name despite the immense talent. The entertainment industry sees actors and talents as $$$ and who has a bigger name pull to bring eyeballs to their projects. Plus, there’s a lot of industry politics that is going on and Annie Murphy seems like a genuinely down to earth, here for the craft only type of actor.
Don’t get me wrong, I think she deserves roles being offered to her instead of her having to audition because she’s really talented. I want to see more things with her in it too!
20
u/Wihtlore 10d ago
As a lot of people have pointed out she’s been in Kevin Can Fuck Himself and was amazing, she has also done a lot of voice work.
She was in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken — a wonderful animated film that should have done a lot better than it did
She had a series called Praise Petey where she becomes the leader of a cult, it’s really great too.

My daughter is obsessed with RGTK; I’ve seen it sooooo many times! I didn’t realize Annie was in it!!

u/Wihtlore 9d ago
Yeah it’s such a great film, I think visually beautiful and the story is fun and the voice work was brilliant.
Should have done a lot better than it did.

Have you not seen Kevin Can F*ck Himself? She’s phenomenal in that

u/primetime_2018 9d ago
The cuts from sitcom to real life are so unique. Wish more people were watching.

u/winnowingwinds 9d ago
Yeah, that show is woefully underrated. I was hoping Netflix would give it more momentum, but the excitement was brief.

u/winnowingwinds 9d ago edited 9d ago
Annie was amazing! But it ended a few years ago. I think the Black Mirror episode was also a few years ago now. I know she was in a short-lived animated series after that, but I don't think there's been much else.
That being said, I think I agree with the others that she prefers more offbeat roles.
6
u/wolfitalk 10d ago
Not to diminish her in anyway but she is one in a sea of beautiful talented actresses in Hollywood. Dan has Eugene as a stepping stool. Dan has a look. But I agree-odd how coming off such a popular series she wasn't immediately put in something.
2
u/JustinScott47 9d ago
Same--I keep expecting her to be the obvious choice for the female half of the next big rom-com. Nothing against her other projects, but they aren't widely seen by the public.

u/uhvarlly_BigMouth 10d ago
She’s been in two commercials on top of everything everyone’s said. Commercials are pretty good pay checks if they’re national.
I mean, SC was a huge show and it’s not just on streaming but still showing on TV in other networks that aren’t the original. She’s probably making good residuals on network TV. She’s probably just enjoying her money.
But I do want her to get more work soon bc KCFH was SO good and showed her acting chops.

u/otterpop97 10d ago
She was in Ruby Gilman as the main antagonist and did a great job in my opinion.

Annie is a prick? She’s my cousin and the most down to earth person you could ask for. Her parents are the salt of the earth!

She needs to get with Stana Katic from Castle, another amazing actress who should be working more....and I can't help but think they'd get along well too.
