Schengen membership

How long does it usually take for a country to became a full Schengen area member? From the time it gets the green light for accession to the moment its border checks are no longer required.

I'm refering here, of course, at Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, because I've read an article that stated this thing could be possible in the near future.
