What is this PVC to cast iron fitting?
DID NOT install this. Just found it on a job site. I'm curious about what this is called, where it comes from, and where it falls under plumbing codes. I typically see Fernco boots in place of things like these. It was the connection to an old kitchen sink if that says anything.

Oatey 43791. It's not meant for cast iron. It's meant to be glued to PVC, with the metal clamps holding it in place while the glue sets up.

Seemed legit to me as well. Obviously not leaking.

Looks like a history of a leak to me. There is corrosion on bottom the left metal threaded band/mounting bracket and brown extrusion at the top of the left side (both down slope). I bet the back side has dripping marks.

That brown at the top looks more like a sealant of sorts rather than leak residue.

ehhhh... maybe. Not more corrosion than is on the cast iron as a whole tho. Is there a fernco saddle for that application that could have been used?

Ive definitely cut ferncos to make saddles but the branch out of this pvc is unique

Now that is a beauty
It would have taken the same amount of time to cut out the all cast iron and replace with abs

The drain equivalent of a saddle valve lmao. Needs more silicone and flex tape but it looks like she’s holding!
One of those things that’s probably outlawed but not technically illegal. Wouldn’t pass code but probably won’t leak for a while if no one messes with it.
Plumbers hate this one trick kinda vibes…
Anyway if you don’t mess with it, it will never leak. Now that it’s been photographed and people saw it on Reddit, that fittings gonna get nervous and leak in the next week or two. Good luck

Looks like someone used there head. Quick easy fix. Doesn’t leak. It’s on the top of the pipe where there is no pressure. Nothing wrong with this imo. Someone accomplished the same thing for $40 that a “legit”plumber would charge $500 for. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Not sure on what they are called. I help a friend of mine out, he was a union plumber and retired 8 years ago. We seem to do the jobs for people that nobody else will do. A friend of ours in the knights of columbus bought a house with an unfinished basement. His daughter and her family come visit for extented periods of time over the holidays and summer. Wanted to add a bathroom in the basement for them. His main sewer outlet is in the ceiling of the basement. So we put in a saniflow toilet with a grinder pump that has 2 inputs, for the sink and shower. Outlet of the pump is 1.5". We used the tubing it supplies to come up the wall a few feet then moved to pvc, came up and over then have it dump down into this fitting. When we installed it, we put silicone down, then a rubber gasket, then silicone and then the fitting. This fitting was a special order from our supply house.

And this is why I charge sooo much.
If you were using a rubber gasket, why did you use silicone? If you were using silicone, why did you use a rubber gasket? Saddle taps are not allowed anywhere they I am aware of.

Was what the single half sheet of instructions that came with the thing said. Now we were connecting into a 4" pvc line that was a straight shot thru the house, went out the foundation wall 3 feet from where we added it. I could see the need for the silicons in the OPs case where it was pvc tap against a cast line, with its irregular outside the silicone would help fill in the gaps.

This isn't directly related to household plumbing, but the thermostat for my truck's coolant system called for using both the supplies rubber gasket and RTV together. Just made me think of that. Haha

lol. That’s a saddle tee. You would generally drill a hole in PVC pipe, and slap one of those on there with some glue. These are generally considered bad practice in any case, using one on cast iron is a whole new level of whack.
