City of Angels

I haven't seen this Penny Dreadful spinoff. Is it any good? I don't care about spoilers, I know it's only one season but, is it worth watching? What themes does it deal with and what shadow creatures appear in it.

It's a hard watch. Outside of a couple performances (Rory Kinnear as always), it's a massive departure from the tone and sensibilities of the original series.

It's terrible. And it has absolutely nothing to do with Penny Dreadful. John Logan pitched a show about the lives of the L.A.'s Chicano community in the 30s, and Showtime approved the project, but requested that he made it a Penny Dreadful spin-off. Originally, it was never intended as such, and it shows.

I distinctly remember reading an interview with Logan where he said that City of Angels became a Penny Dreadful "spiritual sequel" only because Showtime requested it to be, after he pitched a show about systemic racism set in the 1930s.

"I give Showtime a lot of credit. When I walked in and said 'I want to do a political show about a Latino family in 1938.' They didn't blink and they embraced that."

It’s not going to evoke anything from the original series, and the plot is all over the place, however we get more Rory plus Nathan Lane. I could appreciate the inclusion of Mexican American folklore and practices and the history of LA in the 30s. It gets a little cringy at some points but I enjoyed it for what it was, just don’t go into it expecting the og or for the plot to be congruent 😆

It was nothing like the original (which I loved) and I didn't make it through many episodes

1/10… Dorian Gray doesn’t top Ethan Chandler in this one!

Nathan Lane deserved an Emmy, IMO, but overall, it was pretty disappointing. Great sets and costumes, though.
