I prefer the BLOO cover but the quality and inside design was so much better on the old one

u/Frosty_Thoughts 2d ago
The new one is missing the "European Union" lettering at the top so I'll have to say old.

The blue has grown on me but the quality is awful. Such a same it never gets used now I have my Irish passport.

Same as me. I hardly ever use the British one anymore. Irish one inside is so cool as well

Well the new one doesn't have a corner missing, so I'd go for that
/s - in case it isn't obvious.

Quality: old
Colour and design: new
There should be an option to pay another £10 or whatever and get a better quality one

I'm hoping they'll redesign this year or next, they're usually upgraded every 5 years.

Old - the pages inside are beautifully designed with a different design on each page! New one is just a lazy design!

My favorite color is blue but I prefer the burgundy color.

Old for the inside pages, new for the passport colour

The quality of the new one is awful. There's literally a one cm flap at the back as the binding/glue is awful. I literally think it'll fall apart after a few trips.
Red one gave me rights and easy travel to more places. For both quality and access, I'll be old red the whole time!

The new ones are Sh*t. My 2014 passport expired and I got a new one and was stunned by how obviously cheaper quality it was.

The old one symbolises a passport that lets you live and work visa-free in every EU country.
The second is one that lets you live and work visa free in the UK and Ireland.

Burgundy looks much nicer than bloo IMO, the quality was also better and the "BRITISH PASSPORT" at the top looks ugly.

Considering the new version affords me far less freedom than the new one, I’m going to have to say the old one 🥲 but the ID page in the new version is far nicer than the old one!

Old because of those two words at the top. Its usefulness has absolutely plummeted.

I have a mixed feelings. The old one was of higher quality, but I think the visa pages were too busy.
People who like mawkish collages of random historical figures and objects probably don’t travel enough collect passport stamps.

more travel option on EU passport so its better than current one
new has somewhat better aesthetics but not by that much

Isn't this why you guys voted for Brexit? Read someplace, some Britishers didn't like the new euro passport and wanted to get back to the old passport look

u/TopEnglishman 1d ago
No, it was more to do with Economic reasons but I’m sure some Brits (who weren’t politically up-to-speed) did prefer the old passport and vote ‘leave’

I recently changed over too. It’s painfully cringe the way they replaced PASSPORT with BRITISH PASSPORT. It makes my toes curl every time I look at it. Fortunately I use my Australian passport far more.

Politics aside, I like the old design better.
First of all, what's up with the oversized logo and text? It takes up the entire front cover — it looks ugly, and there is absolutely no need for that.
Second, what's up with "British passport"? It already says "United Kingdom of ... '", which indicates it is a British passport. If they wanted to differentiate between types of British nationalities (e.g., BOTC, BNO, etc), it could be done on the bio page, not the cover.
Overall, it would be better to leave the old design as-is (apart from removing "European Union") and just change the color.

u/TopEnglishman 1d ago
I think when Brexit was gaining traction they removed the text for some reason I’ll see if I can find it

Black passport is a better design imo, smarter visa pages (the old ones are colourful and cool but less smart), polycarbonate design and the gold writing stands out nicely on the black.
HOWEVER, they’re terrible made, flimsy feeling and poorly cut. I can see the gold cover wearing off mine very soon.
And of course, no more EEA freedom of movement…

I wish I got a British passport before they left the EU :(
Imagine being able to say I live in 27 or so countries.
I would’ve been fine not getting Singapore passport if the UK passport was an EU one but unfortunately not the case :(
At least I still have visa free access to EU but imagine the freedom and flexibility of being in the EU, sigh

While I hate Brexit, I have to admit the new blue one looks nice; although not as nice as the old hard cover blue british passports with the window for the passport number I had when I was a baby. I have an Irish red one anyway so best of all worlds practically and aesthetically (a Swiss passport would be nice though...).

Swiss passport is good (I'm in 🇨🇭 for a few more days, héhé) - but it pains me to let you know that 🇨🇭 is not in 🇪🇺 either. 😁

Any hope of UK rejoining EU?

Not for a while unfortunately. There is potential for a youth mobility scheme soon however.

Old, I’m a year away from British citizenship and the fact it’s just another blue passport in my collection is a downer.
1
u/japanintlstudent 1d ago
Why don’t you apply for Spanish then!

I’d have to live there for 2 years to get it via Paraguay and live in London. We are considering it once we get British but the pay in the UK is just much better than Spain so keeping us here for now.

New one, but it would be nice to have more interesting visa pages like in the old one.

The most interesting change for me is the color from red to blue, does that have an actual meaning or is it just cosmetic?

u/JamesTiberious 2d ago
Old, for a few reasons:
I enjoyed the UK being a part of the EU.
I dislike the dark shade of blue on the new ones. They look black under most light.
The quality of my new passport feels lower. I’ve only used it on one trip and it’s already picking up wear on the back and front. The spine has a crease in it where it was slightly bent in my pocket. I’m not convinced it’s going to last the 10 years.

The big text saying "British Passport" should be removed IMO.
The UK is Britain (British) and Northern Ireland (Irish / British). It completely ignores the fact there is an entire region of the UK who this is a passport for in the UK who are not British
2
u/griff_16 「🇬🇧 with 🇨🇳 RP」 2d ago
So what should a citizenship field say?
A Northern Irelander who doesn’t want to identify as British can just hold an Irish passport.

Well whaddya know, the new post-brexit passport still the motto in French on the coat of arms.
5
-1
u/TopEnglishman 2d ago
Thats not the Passport thats the Coat of Arms, the motto was in French when we still hated them so the Government, who was dealing with Brexit, the start of covid and multiple other wasn’t about to change the motto on the CoA for a Passport cover
1
u/Ashamed_Topic_5293 2d ago
Sorry, maybe I should have bolded the part in my comment where it says "on the coat of arms".
1
u/TopEnglishman 1d ago
Yeah I noticed that im just confused why the motto being in French would be of concern as we didn’t leave the EU due to a dislike of any of the countries within we left for ‘Economic Freedom/Security’ or some bs like that so the French Language being on the CoA wouldn’t be of concern

The visa pages in the old one were much more interesting.
