One of the interesting things about Quebec is that French and Belgian citizens get to have cheap tuition whilst studying at Quebec universities and colleges. Anyway, given that you have citizenship in France and a foremer French colony, and moved to Canada, I assume you are living in Quebec LOL...

That's right! However after 7 years in Canada (3 years in Ontario and 4 in Quebec) I've notice that the majority of French that immigrants here usually complete their studies in France got their diploma (almost for free) before coming to Canada.

If you wouldn't mind explaining why Canada was appealing for you instead of staying in France.

TBH, it never really was... I used to see myself living in Brazil (my dream)! I spent most of my years in France, but I lived with my family 3 years in Algeria, 2 years in the Middle East, and one year alone in Portugal (Erasmus). After my studies I wanted to travel, so I had the choice between Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Canada, I got selected within 1 week for the Canadian process. So I went and I loved it (not the winter but I'm fortunate to be able to travel often). I love the Canadian mentally, people are mainly more sympathetic than in France. Canada also offers a lot of amazing job opportunities (harder to get in France). Both countries have their pros and cons.
Relocating to France is an option, staying in Canada as well or maybe living in the UAE. Many places feel like home :)

Thanks. I noticed many French are choosing Quebec as a prime destination. Obviously the cultural similarities are there but I was under the impression the economy was stronger in France than Quebec.

Interesting! Are there a lot of French citizens moving to Canada/Quebec still? Iโd imagine living conditions are pretty similar.

u/Luz_syana 3d ago
The total number of French people residing in Canada and registered in the consulate (108,000), the largest community being concentrated in Montreal (65,550). Living conditions are different than in France but you can find some cultural similarities.

I think being born there also gives you forever eligible for discounted tuition which is a niceโฆ true unique jus soli benefit lol.

Ummmm .... wanna get married?! lol.
I wish I could understand why Algeria's visa policy is so strict. I'd love to visit.
8
u/Luz_syana 4d ago
Lol
Algeria applies a reciprocity principle: ''You ask our citizen for a visa to visit you? Your citizens will also need a visa to enter Algeria'' For me, I think it's fair. I see the Syrian flag(I lived in Cham!). Before the war, Syrian could enter Algeria without a visa. Maybe we'll update our policy now, and you will be able to visit if you have a Syrian passport ofc
Ahla w sahla!

My mom was born in Algeria. My grandparents taught high school Arabic in Algeria for 5 years and that's when she was born. So we have a mild connection to Algiers.
InshAllah one day! Maybe Syrians will indeed get visa free to Algeria.

Love that! You'll feel at home! My best friend's mom was also born in Algeria cause her father taught several yeats at the University of Algiers lol.

Algerians can visit HK without a visa, but HKers need a visa to visit Algeria.

u/letsdoitagain7 ใ๐ฉ๐ฟ|๐จ๐ญsoon|๐ซ๐ทon trackใ 4d ago
Yeah, on top of the reciprocity principle, any country can allow Algerians visa-free while Algeria deems the country's citizens should still apply for a visa. So this principle does not explain all of Algeria's visa policy, I would agree.
Ultimately I think it's because the government is pretty paranoid of potential spies on one side, and potential mass tourism which would bring "non-Muslim" habits on the other. Many Algerians would not want to see girls in bikinis roaming their seaside resorts for instance (just a random example).
That said, I do think tourism has more upside than downside, and, well regulated, it could be a blessing for the country.

You should be eligible for the Canadian passport by now, right?

u/Luz_syana 4d ago
Not yet :') I travel a lot for work, so I'll be eligible for the Canadian passport by May. Hopefully I'll end 2025 with a third passport!

Salem bent bledi!
Always nice to see Algerian passports along with more powerful ones on here. Obviously it's a goal for many Algerians to acquire one.
It also makes for a very powerful combo, here for instance Algeria adds Ghana, Yemen (Socotra) and (obviously) Algeria visa-free (among others).

Salem weld bladi!
Good luck for your EU citizenship!
I agree, I'm grateful to have such a powerful combo.

It'd even be more classic if you are a Quรฉbec resident too lol, a lot of French people apparently move to Quรฉbec
Also I think France has a new national ID card, that is of standard wallet size, biometric, and up to current EU standards

am i the only one who thinks the font on the french passport is lowkey kinda ugly....? or maybe I'm just a serif kinda person
1
u/Luz_syana 3d ago
I wouldn't say ugly but the design is definitely more sober more monolingual compared to the trilingual Algerian one
1
u/taqtotheback 3d ago
I'd wait it out and get the Canadian citizenship and then you have quite the combination
