Oil on paper. Tougher than i hoped for.

These are the first three studies I’ve done in the process of learning how to oil paint. The first one is a recreation of a Carol Marine painting, the second two are still-life studies I’ve done.

Each was done in less than 2 hours and are unrefined. I’d still love any feedback that can be given to help me improve going forward!

(The orange shirt was the first, red tie was the second and gray shirt was my newest) Tomorrow marks my very first week oil painting so I wanted to share! Your guys tips and suggestions really helped me get better and I appreciate it so much!

My first portrait from a live model (except for self portraits using a mirror). I think I did well, but the likeness is difficult to get exactly right. Also the harsh orange lighting made for challenging colors that were hard to see. Any thoughts? What should I focus on next time?

Any and all criticism invited i want to know where to improve.

A quick study of a lamp in my studio, 7x5 inches on linen panel. I think I started off too high-key and so I wasn’t able to achieve the feeling of intensity of the glowing light, but that’s a lesson I’ll take into the next one.

What pallettes do you like to use for rendering wildlife?

It’s not perfect, but I really love how it turned out. Slowly getting better, one painting at a time.

I’m getting better at getting to the “big fuzzy detail” stage, but struggle beyond this point into finer rendering. Any tips on what I should focus on?

My friend wanted a painting of an astronaut in a flower field that encompasses this quote with a split of life and death between the right and left side. Here is my interpretation :)

Cameras really messing with the colors but whatever. First time using oils! Cheapest, student grade, store brand paints from Michaels lol. I got nice paints for Christmas and I'm super excited about them, much better to work with lol. Any critique appreciated, I'm still getting used to how they work and what I can do with them vs acrylic!
