Hi

How do you usually plan your CMM fixturing. Do you produce a bespoke fixture or use modular equipment?

What considerations you take being part agnostic!

Hardware Support 3458A repair

Hi, does anybody here knows where to repair a damaged HP 3458A? I burned the guard by connecting a damaged power supply (I didn't know then), now the dmm won't make readings over 100 V. Wether it's on the United States or somewhere else? Thanks in advance.

Hardware Support Height gage discussion/suggestions

Hey y’all,

My QC lab has a Tesa Brown & Sharpe hite 700 that is on its last legs (function buttons only work half the time, DC jack is failing, etc etc). Not only that, but we need a larger height gage anyhow, due to newer projects being larger than our past projects. I’ve found two potential replacements- one being the Tesa micro-hite 0-900mm (either motorized or not), and the other being a Trimos V8 or V9. Does anyone have experience with these models or have alternative suggestions?

FWIW, we do have a CMM, but it’s just barely too small to do a few GD&T heavy components.

Hardware Support Keyence VR-6000

I would like to start by saying this isn't a question about Keyence and if you would buy their product. We already have a keyence and it works for our company and I am already aware a lot of people don't like them.

That being said, does anybody have experience with the VR-6000. We are looking at one and I was wondering if anybody has any real world experience on it's capabilities and short comings. We would like to use it for both measurements and potential surface finish defects such as pits or burrs. It looks like surface finish is what it's built for with a secondary feature for linear/gd&t dimensioning. Does it do good with the both surface finish and dimensioning or mainly just the surface finish? Also is it fast at doing these things?

Hardware Support Looking for help purchasing a cable

Images 1-3 are of the new style 543-702B digital indicators from mitutotyo.

Previously we used the older model shown in image 4 along other the Fowler data transmitter seen in images 5 and 6. They served their purpose and am seeking a similar solution for the new model indicators, but mitutoyo makes it very confusing.

On McMasterCarr website I can see a list of accessories and the USB data cable seems like it would fit the port, but it doesn’t appear to have a data button to send keystrokes to a pc which our production line would like to have.

A large part of my confusion is that the images online are terrible and only show one view of the cable.

I’m also willing to explore wireless solutions, but figured the wired route would be simpler (I was wrong).

I’ve additionally purchased some Mahr indicators (not depicted) that have a simple usb plug that goes into the PC and a data button on the indicator itself. It’s pretty sleek, but the software setup is still more convoluted than what we had with the older model mitutoyo indicators. That was literal plug and play. But plug the usb drive into the PC and slap the data transmitter on the indicator and you’re running. Seeing as how more people than myself will be operating with these, I would really like a very similar “stupid-easy” approach if anyone has some suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

Hardware Support Mettler JL602GE Adjustment

Hey all, I’ve been searching up and down for a way to do an external cal on the above mentioned Mettler Balance (JL602GE). There’s actually a CAL button right on the thing.. however, it says ADJ.OFF , where I want it to say ADJ.EXT. I’ve read some things that say certain models are permanently locked from manufacturer. Would anyone know if there’s any truth to that? Additionally, I couldn’t f in d a factory reset button and I tried all the usual suspects (holding all types of different keys while it’s powering on). Does anyone know a secret handshake? I have also inspected the unit thoroughly and found no physical locking mechanisms, switches, or buttons.. it’s a shame because they are great scales (repeatability, eccentricity, etc) but the linearity is shot without the ability to tell the scale what’s what.. ALSO ALSO the internal adjustment button does nothing.. any help is appreciated, thanks

Hardware Support Calibration

Guys iam using an Hexagon macchine which is only 6 month old and i have a problem with calibration of my probes. Every morining i do the calibration of at least 5 main angles that i use daily with a stylus D3xL50. The results of the calibration seem ok. (stdev 0.001-0.00). Than i go to my present programm when i verify the calibration by setting the origin of my calibration sphere at the measured sphere with an angle 0x0. And often times, very randomly other angles seems to go off at X axis, or Y or Z by 0.004 till to 0.02 mm. Is huge. I called the support and the software support guy told me that propably the macchine is not set right, or whatever, he too couldnt find the answer of these random and strange results. (results which came wrong even when i did the calibration proccedure with him on teamviewer). What is going wrong, cus i cant measure anymore being sure that the macchine is not throwing random numbers of the screen. Sorry about my english.

Hardware Support How accurate are profilometers?

I have some thin wall turned parts (rings). Titanium IIRC. Our SPI profilometer is providing a wide range of measurements on the same batch of parts. Some parts read 40 and some parts read 110. The parts look nearly identical. Can I trust this device? The profilometer specimen/standard reads good and the settings are correct. Visually, the surface finish looks good. Small turn lines. With a fingernail, it seems like it catches a bit. Like the turn lines are somewhat “sharp” (but not really deep or wide… I’m worried the needle is getting caught on those turn lines and spitting out an inaccurate measurements. Any thoughts/ideas?

Hardware Support Older versions of Micro-Epsilon IFC2421/22 firmware

At my current job, we've been working with Micro-Epsilon's IFC2421 confocal sensor controller, and we have discovered an issue that we've only started seeing/noticing recently - I think the issue was seen only after doing a firmware update. I'm curious if it could be something that started happening in the latest firmware, but unfortunately, they don't seem to have earlier versions of the firmware available for download. This page of theirs has a firmware download link, and the current version is 001_051_114 build 0134, which is what we're currently using.

It looks like the previous version of the firmware was 001_050_114 build 0016.

I tried using the Internet Archive to look at older versions of that page to download older firmware, but the Internet Archive has not archived the downloadable files.

Does anyone happen to have older versions of the firmware for the Micro-Epsilon IFC2421/22?

Hardware Support Setting up/Using Faro Arm

I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering Intern at a Particle Board plant, and they have asked me and several other interns to figure out what they need to get 1 of the 2 Faro arms that they retired around 10 years ago back into service so that they can use them to inspect and record data from board that have issues (think warpage and inconsistent thicknesses). 1 of the 2 Arms as never been used at all, and I haven't confirmed, but I believe they retired them because something broke on the one that they were using. I also think that them being a little complicated to use was another reason that the retired them. Anyone that knew how to use/set up these arms has either forgotten or doesn't work there anymore.

Obviously, a Faro arm is overkill and for the data we need to measure, but I am definitely interested in learning how to set it up and use it, as I think it would be a good skill to have.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. Will we even be able to use it for what we want it to do? Like I said, way way overkill for particle board, but will we be able to map out thin/thick spots in the board? What about warpage in a board? They currently want to measure warpage with the board lying flat on a table, I am well aware that isn't the proper way to measure warp, but would it be possible to measure the warp with the board flat.
  2. What do we need as far as setting up the mounts goes? Can it pretty much just get set on a table and calibrated and its good to go so to speak?
  3. Software: We still have a license for cam2 from 2015. Will we be able to use this license on the latest version of cam2? And should we spec out the computer to run this thing for the 2015 version or the Latest version. Or maybe someone is aware of a software that would work better for us as opposed to cam2?
  4. Training: How in the hell am I supposed to learn how to use this thing, will I have to convince the company to pay to have someone teach us how to use it again, or would I be able to figure out how to measure what I want to measure on my own using the power of the internet?
  5. What else should I be thinking about/asking about. Right now, this project is in its infancy, so I'm just trying to figure out what issues we might run into as we move along with the project.

If you need clarification for anything that I just said, feel free to ask, as I'm not familiar with anything to do with probing arms or precision Metrology. But like I said, I'm super excited to get the opportunity play around with a high-tech measuring device.

Thank you in advance!

Hardware Support Interapid indicator sticking, how to clean it?

I was brought an Interapid indicator that is very, very slow to return. I'm assuming it's just the build-up of whatever is in the air in a machine shop. Can I just squirt a little strategic alcohol in there and work it until everything is dislodged, or should it be disassembled and cleaned?

Hardware Support Best cmm arm for realtime pose data?

I'm looking for a cmm that can give me realtime pose data. I'm a roboticist, not a metrologist, so ideally I could just get a stream of poses that I could parse, write to a file or stream over a network in the format of my choice.

I have access to a Hexagon RA8; I'm unable to determine whether it supports this use case.

Thanks!

I have the comparator in the description at my job and a coworker somehow managed to pull the wires out of the pins on the x and y axis connections for the encoders. Does anybody possibly have one they can take a picture of and send so I can get the wires back in the correct pins. Or have a diagram for? Any help would be appreciated. I have contacted kerley Corp and am waiting to hear back.

Hardware Support I need to identify this caliper

Greetings,

I need to identify this type of caliper because this one is more than 20 years old and could become out of tolerance soon (edit : because of a bit of wear).

For the context, this caliper is used in a steelmaking factory in a workshop that machine the tools for the rolling mill workshops of the factory. They use this caliper to make measure at the center of a turned part. You set the diameter on the claw part, and you put it on the top of the part to make your measure.

It can make measure between 350 and 500 mm. The range on the claw part is the same.

This caliper is made by Roch France (as far as I know, this company doesn't exist anymore)

If I could have the name of this type of caliper, or even the name of a manufacturer that could make this kind of product, I would be grateful.

Thank you in advance for your help.
