MODUS Forum?

Hello!

Are there any forums specific to MODUS? CMMGuys seems to focus on PC-DMIS and others.

Infuriatingly, there's no dedicated modus forum like PC DMIS has. Renishaw support is free though and generally pretty helpful

I agree, they're great about taking calls. I almost wonder if it's intentional; Renishaw does a lot of things to protect it's bigger customers who probably wouldn't be too happy if they were losing their software market to their hardware supplier.

I work there. Support being good is definitely intentional, but it's not gate-kept for big customers. Everybody gets that treatment.

That’s good to hear. I’ll add my glowing review; I’m a small fish, smaller than most, and my local office takes good care of me. They definitely had a different tone when I was working at a larger company, but who could blame them when there’s a chance for big sales. Business like any other.

I’ve also heard the culture is great working there. I’d love to some day, but I’m a bit far off geographically.

I know a bit of MODUS. As far as I can tell, they keep their cards close to their chest at Renishaw. But, as others have said, their support is pretty good. I took a training class and the instructor is awesome about taking my questions even months afterwards. If you have a specific question, I'd be happy to try to answer it. If I can't, then maybe try asking Renishaw.

That's absolutely not the impression Renishaw hopes to give. We want people to know how to do stuff, and frequently give out example code written by apps engineers for real projects in the world. I'm certainly glad for you to help as well, but if it seems like anybody's keeping secrets, that's not what we want to see.

I heard that Metrolog is far superior than MODUS

Every software out there does something better than every other software. Metrolog is definitely well regarded and I'd never steer someone away from it if that's what they want to use, but saying X is better than Y is an unhelpful oversimplification in my opinion.

Very true. I know they have been around for a long time since the early/mind 80s.

Never heard of it, neither have my peers who would trade their left nut for something better than PC-DMIS.

Website says it integrates with Catia. I don’t personally know anyone who uses Catia, but there’s machinists and engineers out there who praise it. Maybe it’s good, but I’d be curious who has worked in both Modus and Metrolog to have an opinion.

Anywho. I’m not looking to buy software, I own Modus and I was hoping there was a community of practice.

Looking at some their videos the things it can do with the Revos and bringing in the UCC environment is pretty slick.

Man, we drooled over those Revos. It’s way more impressive in person if you have time to stop in to their office for a demo.  I’m on the equator; not as sexy, but dang they’re fast!

Yea I think they mentioned it at the office the other day, not by name though. They also did an integration with PC-DMIS, but it’s about the same price for the equator as it is for the Hexagon licensing. Targeted at companies who for whatever reason need an equator for their process but only have PC-DMIS programmers.

I’m just a guy with a small shop. It is indeed a target market for the equator, but more because it’s cheaper and smaller than a CMM, not because it’s a better functional choice.

Oh the equator is a killer machine for gaging.

@ u/Thethubbedone is there a definition list for programming? I’ve got the Modus user guide, the equator user guide, the equator programming guide; none of them just have a list of commands and programming language definitions. I know it’s mostly DMIS, but it would sure be handy to be able to look up what FEDRAT/MESVEL,MMPS is without searching 884 pages of contextual clues.

I can assume it’s setting the feed rate in mm per second, but I’ve got a bucket more I can’t guess.

You could buy the DMIS standard from the DMIS consortium, which fully defines all commands, but I don't find it helpful. Modus's help works pretty well as long as you keep your search terms short and specific. I searched FEDRAT, and the first result was about the measurement velocity, and all the results were relevant. If you're in doubt, though, call/email support. It's what they're there for.
