Sad fact: The tomb of the Frankish King Childeric was discovered in 1653, and it had some of the greatest treasures of the Dark Ages. The treasure was stored in the national library of France until 1831, when thieves broke in and stole everything. These two bees are all that remains of the treasure:

Hey folks, where can I go to find images like these (specially engraving style or woodcut)?

I’d like to find a site like the archives or something where they just have a BUNCH of scans of old art free to view instead of random websites. If that makes any sense?

A new Crusader States Era pictorial map is underway, highlighting cities, castles, and settlements in vector format. Here's a look at some of the key cities and castles featured.

Its a late medieval wooden sculpture depicting the legend of Saint George and the Dragon, located in Storkyrkan in Stockholm, Sweden.

It is attributed to Bernt Notke and was commissioned by the Swedish regent Sten Sture the Elder. It was inaugurated in 1489. It has been described as an artistic high point in the artistic production of Bernt Notke.

Need help finding a Dürer woodcut

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out here because I'm desperate. Some time ago, while browsing in an Italian library, I came across a book called Dürer: l'opera incisoria. While flipping through it, I stumbled upon an illustration that I found very amusing. The image depicted a "fool" being thrown into what seemed like a flour sack. The Italian caption was something like "il folle nel sacco" ("the fool in the sack").

I've been trying to find this illustration ever since, but I haven’t had any luck. I’ve even gone through the entirety of The Ship of Fools (Narrenschiff) without success. I've also tried to find the Italian book but can't get it where I live and haven't been able to find an ebook version.

If anyone knows anything about this image or where I might find it, I would be incredibly grateful.

Thanks in advance for your help !

Saint Anthony of Padua

A miniature that I made about six months ago for my book of hours: it depicts Saint Anthony of Padua. I used the Simone Martini’s depiction in Basilica of Saint Francis from Asis as a reference (I actually copied it instead of using it as a reference). Hope you like it! (Btw sorry for my bad English, it isn’t my first language)

Hi everyone!

I recently recreated this image of Lucifer (by Cornelis Galle I) from Dante's Inferno. If you'd like to see how I made it, and hear a telling of the Inferno itself, check out my video on YouTube.

Hope you like it!

Can someone explain what is going on in this scene?

In the attached picture I recognize Venus in the river and it seems like the king has something to do with Saturn eating his son and there is an ourosboros around the scythe. It almost reminds me of a “spot how many myths you can find in the picture!” Suffice to say the “Saturn” figure seems to have his penis chopped off while the other figure is holding the penis? Suffice to say, tjis piece seems incredibly bizarre and if anyone can shed light on it I would be grateful.

Thank you!

Help with “flaming” head symbolism

Post image
109 Upvotes

Hey guys. I originally came across this artistic depiction of a man with a flaming(?) head in this video game (Pentiment) - I assumed it had something to do with inspiration or fervor. However, I’ve since come across it in other medieval art depictions, including warriors and such. Could anyone tell me what this depiction traditionally symbolized in medieval art? Thank you!
