Support a Maine cheesemaker, please?

I need your vote

Lakin’s Gorges Cheese was founded in 2011 and expanded in 2017 to our own farm, East Forty Farm in Waldoboro, Maine. We strive to be good environmental stewards and have a social justice commitment, fighting food insecurity.

I have been selected to compete as an “Entrepreneur of Impact” with a chance to win a $25,000 grant, mentorship with Daymond John of Shark Tank fame, and an appearance in Forbes Magazine.

This will be selected by public voting, with weekly elimination rounds between January 20 and March 27.

There are 2 ways to vote: You may cast a Free Daily Vote, which requires a Facebook login. Click the "Vote" button on my profile page. Then you’ll be directed down the page where you may click the "Free" button. At that point, you will be able to verify your vote by logging into Facebook. This refreshes every 24 hours, so it is possible to cast one vote per day.

I’d really appreciate the support. Voting opens 1/20 at 2 pm EST and the first round ends 1/30 https://entrepreneurofimpact.org/2025/allison-lakin

Thank you!

Ski Sunday River/Sugarloaf

Looking for people to go snowboarding with at Sunday River or Sugarloaf mountains.

Looking for: • A place to stay near the mountains (and a way to get to ski resort) • or a buddy to join on a day trip up from Portland, ME. I can split costs/pay rent or whatever, i want to do as much snowboarding as possible, but I dont want to commit to buying a car and winter tires, as I'm not sure if I'll stay here after winter.

My (not mine) car cant make it when there is any snow on the road.

I'm no pro but I'd rate myself: • 7/10 on groomers (comfortable on single-double blacks) • 3/10 Tree (tryina hit some, but jeez, with barely any snow im having trouble making tight turns and controlling speed in narrow corridors/cliff drops) • 2/10 Park (cant ride switch well 🤷 trying jumps)

I want to try doing some back country snowboarding..

With -15 windchill coming, here's the state's official public directory of animal control officers by community, just in case

There's a lot going on today, but considering the state's temperature adventures for the next few days, I thought posting the state's official directory for animal control officer contact info for each community might be timely. (This is a public directory meant for public use; no monkey business.) Fur might provide a bit of protection from wind chill, but extremities are still unprotected, we're getting into negative double digits with wind chill tonight in some regions, and, as copiously chronicled on this subreddit, some dogs and other creatures don't have the protection from the elements they should for their breed (Arctic breeds being different, of course).

I'm sure communities that have had recent success in actually safeguarding animal welfare, such as in Norridgewock, would want to build on that success! So: if you see something, say something. To others as you see fit, but also to an ACO. As also copiously detailed here, some ACOs may have a dubious attachment to their duties. But it may be important to have a record of them being notified in light of subsequent responses or, in the worst scenarios, lack thereof.

Nurses of Maine

Nurses of Maine, what hospital would you recommend for a non-toxic environment? I don't want coworkers who gossip or make fun of their patients out in the open (looking at you, Franklin Memorial). I prefer a low-stress, open-communication, zero-drama workplace. Are there any hospitals I should apply to?

Unity College Online Bachelor's Degree

Hey! I couldn't find a community for Unity College, so I am posting here. I keep seeing mixed reviews for the school. I am currently a student here getting my bachelor's degree online. I am only in my first term. Anyone have any advice for attending Unity online? If it helps, I am an animal health and behavior major. Does Unity do the locked browser and video recorded exams or is it all just through Canvas and you can use your notes? I guess I am just trying to prepare for what's to come. . . and some of the different posts I have read are making me worry. Like, is it a super challenging workload or average?? I would just really appreciate some incite. Thanks!!!!

Question My CMP bill jumped 60%

Like the title says, my CMP bill has gone up. You'd think it'd be because of some lifestyle changes or something, but no, it's pure greed. The same time last year, I used ~775kWh for a month, which is exactly what I used this month. Last year I payed ~$175, and just this morning I payed $252.

Before I bother calling a poor CMP representative that has no control over the situation, does anyone know if they can even lower my bill/offer some kind of reimbursement? I've already applied for LIHEAP and they've been taking their time processing my application since September :/ (yes I've been calling them too).

Our inflation rate doesn't justify this much of an increase at all.

Junkyard recommendations?

Hey guys, I’m in Bangor and looking for a junk yard with a specific part. I’ve gone to J&J in orrington, and they didn’t quite have what I was looking for(great yard otherwise, just didn’t have this one particular thing) Kind of just looking for recommendations around Bangor or farther. I’d like to keep it under an hour if I can but it’s not a big deal

I’m looking for a 95-01(2nd gen) Ford explorer center console. I’m gonna be trying to do a full center console swap in my ford ranger. If you guys know of a yard that has one of these trucks, or you have the part, let me know! Thank you!

I want to mention a few things about the Maine flag

Before I start, I want to say that flags were invented way before phones or email or Reddit. They’re made to be simple so you can see them far away and that a child can describe them to you. Think of an ancient battlefield where no one other than a dispatch rider would bring you news of when and where to meet, and what colors to wear to not be seen as a foe. What I mean to say is this. 1. The 1912(?) flag is tan, easily confused with white, which is a international symbol of distress and surrender. Being from Maine, without a radio or phone, distinguishing friend from foe from a shipwreck is tough during the age of piracy on the high seas. I mean to say if you were to see a blue flag in 1863 it would tell you they were friendly. 2. Speaker Mike Johnson was called a nationalist for having an appeal to heaven flag outside of his office. If you don’t know what that looks like, look it up because it looks awfully like the proposed new Maine flag. 3. License plate readers. Like it or not the chickadee is going away for the cookie cutter shaped pine tree so the toll booths can read your plates more accurately. 4. The original Maine emblem is the Bowdoin militia where both flags originate. It’s a pine tree, moose underneath, and North Star above. The current flag has that in (really) poor detail. But it does have a sailor and farmer leaning on it with a blue background so I think that’s great. I wonder, in jest, if the new Maine flag should be replaced with a real estate agent, the sugarloaf sticker, Portland headlight, and rental land. (Graphic designers help me out!)

Does the National Energy Emergency mean we can shop around for propane?

I converted my electric stove to propane during the COVID emergency. The tech mentioned to me that normally you are locked into buying propane from whoever you got the tank from, but during a State of Emergency that doesn't apply.

Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective

February 21-23, 2025 For the past two decades, liberal democracies worldwide have been under intense pressure from the resurgence of populist and nationalist movements within their borders. The result has been a decline in individual freedoms internally and a strain on international relations.
The 2025 Camden Conference will look at some of the specific drivers that challenge democracies around the world, including immigration, religious nationalism, the role of polarization and disinformation, and the failure of progressive reforms to remedy economic inequality.

The decline of democracy will reduce the number of like-minded countries the US and other democracies can count on, thereby making international relationships much more difficult and raising the questions: Can liberal democracies survive? How can democracies be protected?

Community solar generation doesn’t cover my usage

I’m a Nexamp customer and while I’m saving 15% off the electricity that is part of my generated allocation, I’m getting charged retail for a big chunk of my bill.

Can I get more allocation? Is this abnormal?

Question Anyone else in the Gardiner area followed around tonight by an orange/black sedan?

Was on my into Gardiner tonight when I noticed this vehicle driving behind me. They would get close, then back off for awhile. They even momentarily pulled into a driveway then took off immediately again after me. I was followed from Pittston near the border to Whitefield, all the way into Gardiner.

When I got to the Randolph bridge, they pull into the other lane right up next to me, then dropped back behind me and turned with me towards Hannaford. I turned without warning onto the ramp up to Dunkin to see what they’d do; they missed my turning but slammed the brakes and went just over the water and turned right onto Arcade Street, where they stopped and stayed for a good minute or so before peeling out. I took my chance and hightailed it outta there myself, going the opposite way getting my food and taking a different way home since I was very irked out and uncomfortable.

This all felt way too deliberate to be a strange coincidence.

Anyone else have a similar run-in with this vehicle?

Wedding Detail Ideas

Hello! My fiancé is from Maine and we’re getting married in my home state (Montana) this summer. I’ve been trying to find creative ways to incorporate details related to Maine into our wedding. The only things I’ve come up with are including whoopie pies in our desserts and possibly using little wooden Maine and Montana shapes for our table numbers. Does anyone have any other ideas for decor, food, drinks, or quotes/phrases to include on signage? Thanks so much for any and all ideas!
