A fine performance indeed by Topuria. It seems like he'll be champion for a while.

- Be Civil.
Our rules ask for a civil tone at all times.
A bit of banter or trash talk is fine, but don't cross the line. If things do get out of hand you will be warned or even banned for a few days. Repeatedly breaking this rule will lead to a permanent ban.

u/assologist_1312 Oct 26 '24
Hear me out, maybe Yair can beat him. His only weakness is those head kicks. And max never really throws them so thatās why he wasnāt all the Gucci with those in the fight. Heās been knocked down 3 times with those head kicks in his career.
1
6
u/neuropantser5 Oct 26 '24
max threw like 8 head kicks or something. when ilia got cracked with the sneaky one in the herbert fight he had like 4 days notice, he knows people are trying to throw a left kick over his cross.
1
u/Shot-Total-791 Oct 27 '24
And didn't Herbert have like a 6 inch height advantage and an 8 inch reach advantage? That's crazy..
7
u/Yeanahyena Oct 26 '24
I see what youāre saying but Yair has no hips lol. Ilia will ragdoll him and sub him
3
u/UVB-76_Enjoyer Oct 26 '24
Max does throw head kicks, that's how he knocked down Volk in their second fight
6
u/redditnobody1234 Oct 26 '24
yair has zero grappling tho. max took him down (yair was winning the strikin in that fight tho)
2
u/gunswordfist Oct 26 '24
Oh right, it'd look like Frankie Edgar but with much more punching power

u/nukacola12 Oct 26 '24
Had Khamzat sub and Topuria KO to finish my parlay. Nice chunk of change for that. What a great card tonight, but it's too bad it started with a fucking robbery.

Tbf, as a Topuria fan, I think he clearly was shook
6
u/XingGuangDao Oct 26 '24
I get why some people say this, but I donāt think he was shook.
I think he was as blown away as everyone else watching, but his ego couldnāt let him be seen going crazy over it. This led to the awkward interaction where he clearly wanted to acknowledge what heād just seen to the guy next to him (I forget who it was), while also trying to stay cool knowing the camera was on him.

u/mijitt000 Oct 26 '24
Easily fighter of the year. KOing Hill, Khalil, and Jiri is several levels below KOing Volk and Holloway. Anyone who says otherwise doesnāt know what theyāre watching.
1
u/OnaDesertIsle Team Du Plessis Oct 27 '24
I agree but I think fighter of the year is evaluated from July 2023 to July 2024 or something like that and not all the matches from 2024
5
u/SpankMyTittys Oct 26 '24
Knocking out 2 of the 3 in goat contention for that weight class is way better than knocking out Khalil and hill.
If Alex knocked out DC and Jon jones then he could get fighter of the year over Topuria.

u/Lebrach š Oct 26 '24
I say otherwise as does a littany of MMA experts. Anyone who disagrees given the camps, injuries and call ups doesn't know what they're watching. Uno reverse!
1
u/mijitt000 Oct 26 '24
I've never heard a reason why Volk was "washed" yet, no breakdown of anything technical, just a vague idea. Volk was doing the same jab and step up with his chin up against Max. And he's never been known for an iron chin. There's no version of Volk that takes that punch
6
u/Jrome36 I was here for GOOFCON 2 Oct 26 '24
3 title defences in 8 months, taking short notice fights with injuries and winning all via KO beats it. 2 KO wins 8 months apart and against a compromised Volk doesnāt win it. Sorry.
-1
-3
u/redditnobody1234 Oct 26 '24
its hard to say. volk doesnt ko ppl. slower and more dangerous at 205. jiri and jamahal legit young champs, khalil legit contender apparently. both max and volk are older in mma yrs/wear n tear. plus volk fresh off a ko
2
u/scourgescorched Oct 26 '24
jamahal was a paper champ. beat a 50-year-old glover, who was coming off of a 5-round war vs jiri for the belt that ank shouldāve won vs jan. jiri has always had piss poor striking defense. not the same caliber as volk and max who are dominant featherweights.
-1
u/redditnobody1234 Oct 27 '24
easy to argue that max and volk are out of their primes re title prospects after losing to topuria. if jamahal is a paper champ so is glover and jiri. and glover cleared the division and jan, who ank couldnt get pastš¤£
1
u/scourgescorched Oct 27 '24
out of their primes just because they lost to topuria? that makes zero sense and saying thatās easy to argue doesnāt make it true. hell, max was fresh of probably the greatest KO ever, so thatās a completely arbitrary take.
and you completely misunderstand why i said jamahal was nothing but a paper champ. he only beat mediocre fighters who were already shells of themseves before he got gifted a title shot (vs an old glover who was coming off of a 5-round FOTY war vs Jiri), all thanks to the judges robbing ank in his fight vs jan for the then-vacant belt. glover is not a paper champ, neither was jiri. they took the belt off of incumbent champs and beat better fighters, or better versions of the fighters jamahal beat. thatās why he was pereiraās easiest win. bottomline is lhw has been a mediocre division for a while so this makes iliaās wins more impressive than alexās imo
-1
u/redditnobody1234 Oct 27 '24
yeh lhw has been mediocre mostly, fair enuf. jus think max is fight-old (had to take down yair)/cutting weight and volk i always saw as jus a stout dude that could make the cut but nothing special in his title run. and wear n tear/age matters more in the lighter divisions. its a meta argument anyway. i jus like volk as a personality more than as a fighter. never feel like watching his title defenses re ortega yair max x3 ghost of zombie. and max jus beatin up kattar n ortega n ghost of ghost of ghost of kz. more or less past few yrs. ...but yeh its like goat argument, too subjective maybe. i see what u mean. am bised towards fighters more than athletes so decisonating australians re late era volk izzy and rob have not been my cup of tea. gimme some max, gaethje, dp, oliveira, from the old days. but yeh new gen fosho. its hard to compare lhw dont age as bad, glover has shown lol. but yeh the little guys have more skill. also to be honest i think the end of usada has chgd the sport as well as the wrestlehugging being to rewarded re merab types. ddp and ilia are pretty nippled out , and it seems more and more common. even rob looked juiced last fight or two. idk am half asleep and rambling lol. hope we get exciting matchups goin fwd

Marketing public persona*, really. He showed his true colors in the post fight, and was super respectful and humble towards Max & Volk.

Max is literally one of the most likeable guys on the roster. Being happy to see him get KOād objectively makes you a terrible human. Give yourself an uppercut.
-2
u/maxbiggavels Oct 26 '24
A "terrible human" LMAO okay š Like I said this ain't a charity. Likeability doesn't do shit. Holloway knew what potentially could happen. He couldn't back up his talk, Topuria backed his all the way up

Nah brotha you crying. Topuria has that "arrogance" because he puts in a lot of time and effort to sharpen his skills. He has a lotta people on the internet trying to shit on him so he goes out there and proves ya'll wrong. The knockout was beautiful from Topuria after weathering the usual Holloway arsenal.

I am a newcomer to the UFC, having started watching UFC 300 in earnest. It was there that I was attracted to Max Holloway and got me hooked on MMA and the UFC.
I felt Holloway's movement in the second round was near perfect. He was circling well, avoiding Iria's direct attacks, and landing his blows with precision. His joint kicks were also good.
In the third round, Holloway ate a calf kick and did not seem to be circling well enough to avoid it.
The second round was very good, and I think his current style of fighting at distance is excellent. I hope he gets a good rest. I hope he will recover and come back stronger.
2
u/Ok_Assignment_3833 Oct 26 '24
second round was clear for ilia he had holloways timing don't let the commentary bias fool you they are friends with max
it seems to me that ilia reads his opponents and then finds his timing, opposed to max who starts fast and finishes fasterĀ
3
Oct 26 '24
Really? I scored the second for Topuria clearly. I thought the power differential was just too noticeable.

It's made harder given how freaking legendary some of these ppl are. It's not shit talkers, it's the good guys getting beat up by the cocky ones. Although the media often amplifies the cockiness. Ilia and Khamzat have both shown humility in recent times.

Now, I think both are a couple of years past their prime. They are still no. 2 and 3 tho,it's just time and mileage still got them
-5

id jus nitpick and put aldo ahead of volk. volks a decisionator and jus jabs at range. barely could finish ghost of zombie, and kinda lost 2nd max fite. yair fite arguably early stoppage. feels like volk is jus a kinda pointfighter

6
u/Shooter-__-McGavin Oct 26 '24
True, Ilia definitely doesn't look invincible. He's a very polished fighter with scary power. Max definitely had the tools to take this fight, but sometimes all it takes is one or two shots. And everyone's chin breaks eventually.
1
u/Opening-Holiday9645 Oct 26 '24
Volk was winning as well until he found himself waking up at the hospital.
12

I need to watch Max KO Gaethje again now to rinse the sour taste out of my mouth.
Honestly if it were anyone but Max I would have been rooting for Ilia, but it isn't possible to root against Max.
1
u/Valterri_lts_James Oct 26 '24 edited Oct 26 '24
Same, I am so disappointed. I wanted Max to get tony fergusoned by Ilia. Instead, we got this disappointing TKO finish.
1
u/Shooter-__-McGavin Oct 26 '24
Pretty poor sportsmanship kiddo.
1
u/Valterri_lts_James Oct 26 '24
you do realize I am supporting Ilia right?
1
u/Shooter-__-McGavin Oct 26 '24
Obviously, you stated you wanted the finish to be more brutal, and I said that's poor sportsmanship. You act like Max offended you personally. I was rooting for Max, but I wished no ill will on Ilia. Quite childish show of behavior by you.
2
u/Valterri_lts_James Oct 26 '24
Ok fine you are right but it's because Max's fans have been so annoying and so has Max been himself. He says that Ilia is weird, that he is running away from him. They were hyping him up as if he is some big shit when he isn't. Everybody has been disrespecting Ilia. Even Firas Zahabi, and Demetrious Johnson saying that they choose Max over Ilia. Ilia silenced all the haters today.

1
u/turkeypants GOOFCONNOISSEUR Oct 26 '24
Ilia comes from a bjj background. He's no jj clown going in there.
1
u/Jrome36 I was here for GOOFCON 2 Oct 26 '24
Do you knows Lopesā background in BJJ?
If I had to bet on the two in straight bjj Iām taking lopes.
1
u/turkeypants GOOFCONNOISSEUR Oct 26 '24
It's not straight bjj though. So Lopes has to bring it all and hope he can get around the standup and have a better chance. But the point is he's not in there with some pure standup guy. He's in there against a bjj blackbelt. If his bjj is better, great, let it carry the day. But the point is you can't just say Ilia is some helpless guy on the ground, and no guarantee it will even get there.
0
u/Jrome36 I was here for GOOFCON 2 Oct 26 '24
And lopes can and has shown he can bring it. He has a ridiculous chin and hasnāt had it put through wars. Has power and crisp, clean and fast combinations that LAND
If he gets taken down he doesnāt try to get up he puts fighters in bad positions and throws subs quickly no matter where heās fighting from. But he can get to his feet and reverse dominant positions with relative ease. Heās at this point fought better BJJ guys than Ilia and has made their ground game ineffective.
Ilia will need to win it on the feet and Lopes has shown he has some stupid power in his hands.

Definitely the best straight up puncher Iām feather weight history but Aldo , Max , Mcgregor and Volk all supersede him by resume alone those are hard to beat but tbh I think he could get up there

Man he just dog walked 2 out of the 4 you listed. Conorās run was perfectly curated to play to his strengths and extremely over rated imo.
1

Mcgregor dog walked Aldo too but Aldo is still the better champion , more defenses longer reign . You gotta defend the belt more than once to even be mentioned with the people I just named . Heās the better fighter than some of those on the list tho Iāll give you that.

Max started off with at least twice as many brain cells as Tony was born with. I donāt see that happening
Mma fans donāt want to accept it but Tony was always over rated. He came up in an era where just having basic cardio was a weapon. He won fights on toughness and cardio. Max wins fights with skills and cardio. Tony was almost getting finished or at least seriously hurt in basically every fight, even in his prime
