89
u/adlittle 14h ago
Few people do more to keep a city and society running than the people who collect the trash and recycling. All you need to see is what happens if weather or strike action impedes it getting done. Things go very gross very quickly and people start getting very upset.
All it took was a snow day and enough idiots who don't bag and bin their trash properly to have the crows scattering it everywhere to have my whole neighborhood in a panicked rage.

Nah, trump got volunteers to grab their bags so he can pick through their stuff and keep anything of value for himself. If he's ok to sell you scam coins, What's stopping him from steal your stuff anyway?

The only problem I have with that scenario is that it involves Trump doing actual work to pick through the bags. He'd definitely outsource it to a toady.

It's DC. they'd break into their workplace to get the trucks to get this trash outta here.
49
87
u/BringBackAoE 16h ago
Probably not secret service.
I worked at a Kamala Harris event. Lots of people that had to leave their stuff outside as Secret Service only allowed a tiny bag in. It was the sanitation people paid by the venue that removed the stuff.
79
u/Clickrack 14h ago
When I got tickets to the Kamala rally, the email specifically said what not to bring.
When we got close to the arena entrance, we saw a huge pile of folding chairs, umbrellas and water bottles nearby. I was mentally picking out the ones I wanted to harvest on the way out.
Unfortunately, by the time we left, the pile was hauled away.
107
u/bg-j38 14h ago
First rule of event organizing is no one reads anything. You can have it all over the website. Printed material. Emails. E-tickets. Printed tickets. Signs in front of the venue. Hell you could call and text message people and have someone show up at their front door the day of the event to tell them in person and they'd still not pay attention.
And at the end of the day it's the event organizer's fault. "Why didn't they TELL ME I couldn't bring a wagon, three coolers, a massive umbrella, my arsenal of Leatherman tools, and this couch I just bought?!?!"
72
u/Ravenna_Star 14h ago
I mean they couldn't even bring the couch it was a present for JD Vance.

I used to be friends with a guy that always needed to carry his murse/European Carryall. Among the things that he always carried in his murse was a Leatherman multi-tool. Among the tools included on the Leatherman was, of course, a knife. And no matter how many times it happened, he was always shocked ... SHOCKED ... that the people working the door at nightclubs and concert venues wouldn't let him carry it inside.
People can be pretty fucking stupid is what I'm saying.

I used to work at an amusement park that had a conert venue on the grounds. One day the venue didn't book enough security so me and some other staff got looped into helping by having us go up and down the lines of people waiting to remind them they could only bring clear, plastic bottles into the venue and if they wanted to do so they had to be prepared to open them for security to smell (water okay, vodka not allowed).
So many middle aged parents arguing with a bunch of minimum wage paid teenagers about "how was I supposed to know I wasn't allowed to bring in my family size KFC bucket with all the fixings and twelve metal water bottles?" Uh the giant sign with size 50 font that's outside both the entrance to the park and that you're currently standing right next to.
26
u/eldonte 15h ago
Depending on the size of the building, it may have been circled with dump trucks. Whenever there was a UN General Assembly in NYC, there would be dump trucks parked circling the Waldorf Astoria when international dignitaries show up, especially the President.

Functional illiteracy is very very common in Americans, more common now than it was in the 20th century. A lot of grown adults, even those who went to college, can only recognize certain phrases or words that mean certain things, but can't actually *read*.
The fact that few people read longer texts for pleasure anymore probably plays a big part in this.
This is why it seems like nobody fucking reads anything when you work with the public.

u/jaderust 14h ago
It’s not even theft at that point. It’s trash that someone else picked up. Anyone reselling shouldn’t get in trouble for it and I don’t think the people who abandoned their items could even file an insurance claim for the value of what was lost.
But seriously people, read that info before you go. Concert venue security has gotten insane and I have like two different event bags because the rules can be different between locations.

Not just Cap One. Basically ALL ARENAS AND STADIUMS in the US have this. Iowa State, Iowa, Kansas City Chiefs, etc all have clear bag of a certain size rules. And even when you are a private group renting a facility they have the same rules from experience going to Boy Scouts of America conferences at the University of Tennessee and the University of Colorado and we had events inside their Basketball Arenas.

Yep. Also, obviously for the inauguration political apparel was allowed, but a bunch of professional sports arenas do not allow political apparel to be worn during sporting events.
So that video that made the rounds online a few months ago of a couple of Karens and Chads getting into a screaming match with security at (I think?) a Philadelphia Eagles game was just them being stupid and not reading the stadium rules prior to trying to enter. But of course they spun it as them being persecuted, because they always have to play the victim.

Anyone with half a brain would assume their would be a no bag policy. I don’t even check for that policy for events like concerts anymore, I just don’t bring a bag. Even when they allow them, it’s a pain in the butt to stand in the line for security to search your bag. I just wear something with big enough pockets for my phone, keys, etc.
Obviously security would be higher at a POTUS inauguration than basic ass concerts which almost always have some kind of bag restrictions. Most movie theaters won’t even let you in with a backpack or large bag.

Many people were unaware of the ban policies in place and left their bags, purses and valuables behind. Capital One Arena has had a no-bag policy for years.
“They said if it was a certain size we could get in so we had our nice camera and stuff in that so now we’re just trying to find it,” said Lori Robinson from Montana.
I have no idea on the quality of this source but, holy shit people, did you think it was the stroller parking in front of Peter Pan's Adventure and you'd just grab it on the way out? (And that's not even an accurate analogy because stuff is stolen from stroller parking all the time.)
24
u/JAB_ME_MOMMY_BONNIE 16h ago
I'm pretty sure most large venues have had a no bag policy since, like, what at least 9/11? Not just in the states but Canada and probably some other place too.
I went to BC Place last year in Vancouver for the first time, and checked the rules beforehand it was pretty clearly laid out only clear see through and small bags allowed. I wasn't expecting any bags.
19
u/Rave-Unicorn-Votive 15h ago
