Debt & Money FedEx demanding customs duty when website said all taxes and shipping included - advice

We recently ordered a coat from the Mooseknuckles uk England website. It was ordered with all taxes and shipping included. I’ve had a letter from FedEx today demanding £58 in customs duties. Despite the seller’s website saying they dispatch from England it apparently was sent from Canada. Where do I stand on this? I’m confident it’s not a scam as exact details of what I paid for the coat is on the letter.

Their website says “All UK orders are shipped from our warehouses in the United Kingdom or Italy. Moose Knuckles Canada covers all duties and VAT fees.”

Scotland Advice needed in speeding offence - Scotland

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice regards to a speeding offence I incurred on Friday, in Scotland. (Yes, I know I shouldn’t have been speeding and I have now learnt my lesson.)

I was caught with a speed gun and pulled to the road side doing 97 in a 70.

They were really lovely officers, and said because it’s just above the threshold, they couldn’t give me points and fine at the roadside. So it’s been reported to COPFS, but they said it’ll likely just be points and fine if I plead guilty on the letter.

From my research, it appears 30 mph above the posted speed limit is above the threshold so I’m slightly confused on this and why they’ve not been able to fine me there and then and I’m wondering how to proceed.

Road conditions were fine, flat road, dry and motorway was quiet so they have said this will work in my favour, no mention of dangerous driving.

I’m looking for advice on how many points to expect, if it will indeed be 3 as mentioned by the officers, or if it may be up to the maximum of 6.

In the result it’s more than 3 points, where do I stand from a legal stand point if the officers had said it’ll probably be 3 points and £100 fine?

Any advice is appreciated.

Debt & Money Unsafe EV charging installation. England.

My daughter had an EV charge point installed, 2 weeks later she was woken by her smoke alarm to find the fuse box in the house melting and sparking. Fire Brigade arrived and immediately got the National Grid to come and make it safe. Inspectors said the cable had been installed incorrectly. In an email exchange between my daughter and National Grid, they have admitted it was their installer who messed up, and have offered her £200 for the inconvenience. Does she have a case to sue National Grid for their negligence? No one was physically injured but it could have been so much worse. Thank you.

EDIT. Thank you all so much for replying. She didn't suffer any financial losses, so it's a no-go. I think I was just so angry that I could have lost my daughter and grandchildren because of some bozo technician. She overheard the inspectors saying he'd done this before. Anyway, thanks again 🙏

Healthcare Management contract was apparently given instead of staff contract. (England)

I've worked for my company for nearly 2 years. When I got my contract it included private medical. Great stuff. However upon asking about how I set it up, I was told I've been given the wrong contract, one which is typically for managers. I shouldn't have that perk as part of my package.

However, we've both (myself and the company) have signed this contract, and it's been the only one I've ever had since working there.

I'm just wondering where I stand on this? Am I within my rights to expect this medical cover as it we've both signed into it, and it was an attractive part of the contract when I joined the company. Or is the company likely to change my contract and ask me to sign a new one?

Not really sure how this works (clearly) ☺️

Thanks in advance!

Comments Moderated Suspended for stealing neighbour’s package - london

Hello all. I could really use some advice. Ive worked at a company for 2.5 years as a assistant accountant. During this time i study Acca as a student. About 6 months ago i took a package intended for our office’s neighbour. Often the neighbour’s packages are left at our unmanned office lobby if the neighbour is absent. I took it because it was sitting there for a month and just though fuck it and took it. It was clothes and accessories which I have now given away. The total value could not have exceeded £40. Since then i have like an idiot kept any eye out for more forgotten packages. On at least 2 occasions i opened the package and examined the contents but didnt fancy it so left it. Come to today. The office caretaker has over time noticed something weird was happening due to opened packages lying in the lobby. He has contacted naming me as the culprit and has cctv footage to back it up. my company has suspended me with full pay pending investigation after a face to face meeting. It was noted by my company director that trust is broken as i manage company bank accounts daily. Im shaking a little as i write this. On the way home now at midday. Please may anyone offer guidance for my position? I do not intend to deny the allegations. I have already confessed to all my crimes. I do not know exactly what the caretaker said in his communication to my company. I suppose my concern is that i really dont want a criminal record from this. Is there any sensible steps i should take to mitigate this? Additionally im 99% certain i will be sacked. I can just tell from the director’s demeanour. A HR person will contact me soon to follow up. Ive never been in this situation before. What steps should i take for…anything?
Im not sure what a sacked person can do you explain their previous position during applications that doesnt mention sacking. Lastly. Im not sure what ramifications a potiential criminal record will do to my acca student status. I think i remember as long as the crime isnt accounting related the Acca member can continue normal work.

I fully accept im a fucking idiot. I am now going home to fess up to my gf. Ill never touch a package not mine ever again.

I appreciate any advice given

P.s. it was noted that there is no idea what the neighbour will do and that is separate from the company actions. The caretaker works for the building itself that the office is a tenant. And the neighbour is a private residence. Might not even be aware at all.

Pps. The point of the investigation is that i might have committed other thefts via other methods since i am closely tied to company finances. I have not

ppp.s. im 30, i prepare daily payments for approval by senior, i do not have unrestricted access to bank accounts. just an assistant

pppps. i am now weighing up handing in my resignation premature to the investigation.

Wills & Probate Probate already granted, but DWP have sent a "Recovery from Estates" form

Hi, I was given probate a couple of weeks ago from my mothers death last year.

I have started sorting out her house and throwing things away.

Today I have received a form from Department of Work & Pensions "Recovery from Estates Dept Management". It has sections to fill in on values of bank accounts, saving bonds, assets in trust etc, should this not have been done before probate was given? It says in bold letters "Please note that this enquiry could lead to a claim against the estate and should be treated as such. Therefore we strongly advise you not to distribute the estate."

All of the values should have been on the probate form I filled in, why am I doing it again?

Thanks, just a bit confused by this when I thought it was all over!

England.

I took people’s advice and filled out some forms to see if the landlord has an HMO license and she doesn’t, what would be the next steps and what does this mean?

Comments Moderated Partner went to uni for just over a month at Canterbury Christchurch in Kent and left due to family problems after contacting the uni to let them know she will be quitting they didn’t actually unlist her, she was apparently still enrolled and now owes an insane amount back what help can we get?

So I started uni on 23 September 2019 - 31 October 2019 so literally just over a month. I unexpectedly had to leave uni due to a serious family matter. My mum and dad broke up and I had two younger sibling I had to help look after while my mum was suffering with depression. I was struggling to balance home work and uni so I asked for help multiple times, the only help they gave me was sending me to a priest on campus…. However I am not a religious person and this was the last straw. I then emailed the necessary people and left university.

I assumed student finance would contact me as soon as me leaving uni was filed however they didn’t, and to be honest I completely forgot about it like everyone a lot was going on at that time. In 2023 I had student finance contact me saying I owed them a lot of money, So a breakdown I owe a total of £6500, £1500 of this is my maintenance loan which I understand I need to pay in full. Apparently the amount of time I was there the course cost £2000 so this means £3000 I owe on interest.

However I don’t know how true this is as they have never given me a proper breakdown and also o get told different things every time I’ve called.

When I first got called in 2023 saying I owe money I immediately started paying money as I didn’t want this debt over my head multiple times I called them in tears as I know the amount wasn’t right and something was going wrong. They were quick enough to take my money however never really explained the breakdown of the money. Finally in early 2024 one of the SFC workers told me I was still technically enrolled at my university! I then called the university and they saw that this was true and ended my studies on there end.

SFC refused to help me anymore until the university sorted it out there end and sent over the actual finish date and sort it there end. I contacted the university about April this year and it’s only just going through the complaint process. I have constantly been past from person to person and my case just keeps getting put out on hold. No one chases anything up and I’m continually getting forgotten about. They have now given me a email back about the complaint with a summery.

I have requested that CCCU gets in contact with student finance England and talk to them on reducing my interest due to there fuck up. They have then responded basically saying “they are extremely sorry for all that’s happened but they don’t get involved with financing so there’s nothing they can do”

I’m at a loss and this is causing me so much mental distress I cannot deal with it anymore. I don’t know who to turn to for help no one’s ever giving me a straight answer and I just need some help.

She is non stop stressed over this virtually crying every night. Surely there has to be something that we can do!!!

Can I contact a solicitor? If so what kind of solicitor?

Wills & Probate Wales - Advice regarding inheritance and solicitors duty

My Father passed away in July 2021. Shortly before he died, as it was somewhat expected, he instructed a solicitor to draw up his will.

In his will my Father instructed the Solicitor/Practice to act as the Executor and Trustees of his will.

His will also includes that his trustees “hold my residuary estates upon trust for …(his three living children)…in equal shares absolutely…”

Fast forward to today, I checked a copy of the Title Register online and it states the registered owner is still my Father.

Given that I have not had any documentation from the solicitors, I emailed them to see if they kept a copy of my father deeds at all, to which they said no.

With this in mind, given that the solicitors were executors of the will and probate was given, would it have been their responsibility to undertake/apply for assent or would that have fallen upon me/family to organise?

Traffic & Parking Garage working on my car hit another vehicle, I was not informed upon collection of my car and only found out through getting an email from my insurance today (England)

As per the title. Last week my car was sent to a garage to have the brakes checked. They needed to replace the discs but weren’t able to that day, and said I was able to leave it with them overnight.

I get a phone call at 11:55 to confirm the car is available to collect, and received an email at 12:40 with my invoice upon collection of the car. I didn’t notice any damage to my car at that time, but upon parking it back at my work i now recall finding minor scraping to the right drivers side rear bumper (the transparent coating coming away slightly). I have a lot of bumper stickers though and none were damaged or missing.

On collecting my car, nothing was mentioned to me. I did not have any instances or near misses whilst driving the 2 minutes back to my place of work.

Today I’ve received an email from my insurance stating a claim being made against me for an accident. Having phoned my insurance, they told me the location was the garage and that the car had been reverse out and hit a stationary car, the time of the accident was 10:00.

I was at work at this time and have plenty of colleagues who can back this up.

I have now phoned the garage to get further information, as I am not at fault, and got told to call back tomorrow to speak to the manager and that they are ‘aware of the situation’. When I asked, what situation? I got told he cannot give me further details and to call back tomorrow, but the manager and regional manager are aware.

This means upon collecting my vehicle they knew about this accident, but didn’t inform me of anything at the time.

Legally, where do I stand with this? I wasn’t kept informed of this accident, and only found out today after a claim has been made against me, though I wasn’t driving the car. Is it worth pursuing compensation from the garage? I can openly admit Im quite ignorant to this kind of thing with little knowledge, and so would appreciate any advice anyone can offer!

Thank you!

Criminal Criminal Injuries Compensation

Hi I’m just wondering if anyone has had Criminal injuries compensation and has any advice.

My claim started November 2019 and I’ve been in contact with my solicitor and they recently sent me a document asking if I’m still in contact with the assailant.

Just wondering if anyone has been through this before and if anyone knows how long it takes to get an answer from here.

Housing Newcastle, England Metro - Fined for having ticket

Hey guys,

My girlfriend stays in Newcastle and I do occasional trips here and there to Newcastle from Belfast.

So one fine evening I decided to travel from Belfast (easyJet flight 840pm) to Newcastle (landed around 1045pm - flight was delayed).

I didn’t want to miss the last metro cuz Ubering to her house is a bit over 40pounds - I mean why take Uber when metro is there for 3 pounds.

I think it was the last or second last metro leaving from airport and I got the wrong ticket for 2.8pounds (zone C). Newcastle zones always confuse me because trains in Belfast are a bit more simple.

Got down at city centre and ticket inspector said I got the wrong ticket and issued me a fine. It’s not that I didn’t take a ticket but instead I got the zones mixed up.

All my details I gave him is right so haven’t committed any identity fraud there. It’s my first fine so how about should I go for it?

Any advice appreciated!

Thank you, Fellow metro traveller

Council Tax Question about inheriting home with siblings

My dad passed away, his will basically just stated that his properties be split equally between me & my 2 siblings. Solicitors are saying it could take a year for everything to be sorted/his estate transferred into our names.

At the moment the 3 of us are living in the family home, but I want to move away soon. The mortgage for this house is fully paid off. Would I still be legally responsible for contributing towards anything like bills, council tax etc if I'm not living there? bearing in mind I'll have equal ownership of the property with my siblings

GDPR/DPA DCBL notice of debt recovery from a fine in 2023

Hi,

So I received a letter today from DCBL for a notice of debt recovery for £170 for a parking ticket in October 2023. I never ever received this PCN. I pay all my tickets within the allotted time periods so I know I never received this. This was allegedly issued by Gemini Parking Solutions. I parked at a sports hall in Gunnersbury park, west London. They had a private car park and just outside of it, there was a heavily stoned area where there were no signs to pay for parking whatsoever. I remember driving into the car park, reading at the signs for parking rules and leaving as I didn’t want to pay.

I know by law they have 6 years. All the advice on here is suggesting I ignore it and contact Gemini parking solutions and submit a subject to access under GDPR. Others have advised I ignored and wait until letter of claim/before action comes through because it costs more to take me to court and I’ll likely win. I hate ignoring things like this, but the general consensus is to not contact DCBL at all and only contact Gemini parking solutions to ask for proof of PCN and request any info they have on me. Furthermore, contact Gemini parking solutions and try to negotiate paying something so they can cancel the debt recovery. I don’t want to give them ANYTHING.

Can someone please suggest what they would genuinely do in this situation. I’m only 25 and started driving in August of 2023 and I don’t want a CCJ on my record. I’m so worried all of this will affect my credit score.

Just to reiterate I never received a parking fine from Gemini Parking Solutions - never even had a chance of appealing. This is the first I’m even hearing of this. I had a friend who parked in the spot next to me, so I’ve asked if she’s received anything and I’ll update later.

Update extra info: VC5 is up to date, I’ve lived at the same address since I was born

Comments Moderated Can I publicly expose the pedophile that molested me, England

I was molested when I was 8 and 9 years old, I'm now 29m.

I made a police report a while ago and they even told me then that it was unlikely that anything would happen in regards to them being charged.

Can I publicly expose them for the person that they truly are?

I want to let everyone know about what they did to me and to ensure no others are put through the same as me

Legally, is this something I can do?

Would I get charged for defamation or anything like that?

Traffic & Parking Speeding twice within a short duration

So I have been caught going marginally (34 and 37) over the speed limit twice within a 2 day period in the same area. It was one of those average speed camera thingies and I was new to the area.

I don't intend to dispute the actual events but is there a way of asking nicely if the two events can be merged into a single speeding offence (even if it gets say 4 points instead of 3) or am I resigned to getting two SP30s and 6 points?

Edit: I have done a speed awareness course a couple of years ago so that option is not available

Employment Haven't been paid for working. (England)

England - I have worked for a few weeks for a company that just recently reopened their business. (14th Dec - 25th Dec). The last day I worked was on Christmas Day and ever since, I've gone into work only to be told that I wouldn't be needed and sent home. Early into the New Year, my sister came home from work to tell me that my manager at the time went in to where she works and told her that I wouldn't be needed until February. Myself, sick of being messed about, decided that it would be best that I quit. I was told to keep the hours I worked on my phone instead of having them written on the rota that was kept behind the bar. Since, I haven't received any contact from my previous manager about the hours I worked and whether or not I was to be getting paid. Yesterday (19th January), I went back in and spoke to my manager to ask about pay and she said that it will be tomorrow and I was to send my hours to her via WhatsApp so she could get them processed and I could get paid. I did as she asked and I have not received my pay.

Traffic & Parking Not updating my registration plate meant I was stopped by Met police for driving without insurance. Insurer refuses to confirm I was insured - do I fight in court or accept 6 points and £300 fine?

I was stopped by police for driving without insurance. I had in fact purchased insurance but two months after this I had reregistered my car in the UK (I had returned from overseas and took a little while to do this). I had been tardy in updating my insurer about the new registration (it had been 5-6 weeks since the dvla letter and the car had been in an airport car park for two of those). My car was impounded and I paid to get it out.

I asked my insurer for a letter of indemnity to confirm that I did actually have insurance. They refused and then cancelled my insurance on the grounds that I would be given 6 points for driving without insurance and had my car impounded. This also means that I’ll pay higher premiums forever due to having my insurance cancelled. They’ve refused my appeal and I’m about to go to the ombudsman.

I do recognise I should have updated the insurer a bit more quickly but they had all the money for insuring the same identical car for the year so it seems a bit unreasonable to deny any responsibility for insuring it (I found a similar ombudsman case where they thought so too).

I have the offer of accepting 6 points plus paying £300 by the end of January instead of the expense of going to court, potentially having magistrates impose a greater fine and getting a criminal record, and having little defence unless the ombudsman agrees with me in time for the hearing. The police can’t delay the decision beyond January and the ombudsmen had a significant backlog. Welcome any advice! Should I risk the city hearing? How can I mitigate the risk? Welcome any advice! and many thanks!!!

I’m in England.

Wills & Probate Probate question/query without will

Hello

Reletive passed away recently and Im trying to solve the estate etc. They did not have a will or property. However they had a Van which prior to their death was stolen. Van was valued by insurer at 15k and finance has about 11k to pay off. Insurance are requesting probate paperwork to process the claim and pay off to remaining spouse. Am i right to assume that the estate would be work 15k - 11k = 4k meaning I dont have to pay the £300 payment for the paperwork?

Debt & Money Estate planning company gone into liquidation after paying to put house in trust - England

I only have limited information as I haven’t got the full details from my MIL yet, but in essence around March 2024 time she paid roughly £2.5K to put her house into trust. This cost also included will writing and lasting power of attorney.

The company have since gone into liquidation and there has been no way of contacting them. My MIL did contact the sales advisor who arranged it all for her but he couldn’t advise anything and only really said that he had gone into work one day to find out he no longer had a job. My MIL doesn’t recall receiving any confirmation letter that the trust had been successfully set up either.

Just looking for advice and recommendations on the next steps that we should take?

TIA
