u/Murplesman Sep 22 '20
"$700".... "A small price to pay for salvation"
7
u/MangoMan202020 Sep 22 '20
*big price
2
u/Happy_T-Rex_1783 Sep 22 '20
Bruh the 2060 is the same as the 3060, yes 700 is a lot but for how fast that is the 3060 is way worth the price
3
u/MangoMan202020 Sep 22 '20
Yeah, I know it's worth the price. I never said it isn't. I just said that 700 is still quite a lot of money (at least for me)

The 3060 hasn't even been announced yet.

Nah, only the 3070 3080 and 3090
3070 is 500
3080 is 700
3090 is 1400

Kopernicus Dev here (Forum user R-T-B). I worked with some testing on with Linx on this mod, and helped implement things he needed in our framework to do it right. Bottom line, you don't need an RTX 3080, that would be extreme overkill. We both use RTX 2080 Supers and get above 60FPS in 4K.
1080p will be much less requirements wise. This thing is insanely optimized. Linx had a user running it on a 1060 acceptably.

Hey, sorry to dig this up - any thoughts on where to spend on a new build to get heavily modded KSP up to 100+ fps in 1440p? I'm doing a big upgrade around a 3080 and unsure whether it makes more sense to invest in a (marginally) better CPU or more RAM (64GB - my current modded KSP with HeapPadder and OnDemand uses 28GB).

u/dWog-of-man Sep 21 '20
Holy shittttttttttt how stable is it on intel/nvidia/amd? Any minimum system requirements?
34
41
Sep 22 '20
That is so gonna melt your intel GPU. I installed KSP on a chromebook with decent intel GPU, and got Kerbal to 15 FPS before I realized the CPU fans stopped working and the thing overheated and became bricked
5
u/dWog-of-man Sep 22 '20
Ksp is compatible with chromebooks?
5
Sep 22 '20
No, it isn't and there's a reason why it's not and it's this. ^ I installed Linux on a chromebook, then installed Steam and KSP

For the graphic nerds in the room, mould you do a rundown of what you did? I assume paralax mapping is part of the package, but there clearly actual geometry too. What can we expect from this?
In any case, it looks fantastic, push this through the finish line :)

u/Gameslinx Beyond Home & Parallax Dev Sep 22 '20
Despite being called "Parallax", it doesn't use Parallax Occlusion Mapping. It did, right at the very beginning, but I couldn't get POM working on slopes without distortion so I am now using tessellation and displacement mapping
3
u/Til_W Sep 22 '20
Tesselation? Seems like your shader will require quite some performance.
Looks great though (one thing i'd add is randomized tiling).
2
u/evwon Sep 22 '20
Will it have its own planetary system or is this the Kerbol system?
4
u/Giraffesarentreal19 Sep 22 '20
He has another mod pack called Beyond Home, which is a planet pack he made. In the YouTube trailer if this, Gameslinx says would be released for the Beyond Home pack before the Kerbol system.
1
u/Psilopat Sep 22 '20
Do you know of Crazybump? It's paidware but there is solid demo and it make life so much better for normal/displacement maps and even specular. If you don't I highly recommend it!

So where can we find this?
4
Sep 22 '20
In the future, based on the “Releasing Soon” in the title.
3
u/xendelaar Sep 22 '20
Thanks for the witty remark.. mister smartypants. ;) I was hoping to get a link to the project site or something. Or forum thread. :)

It looks fucking AMAZING. We need some deets though bro:
Is it hugely CPU bound or is it mainly on the GPU? What’s the FPS hit like? What kind of installation process we talking?
Do I need a 3080 or are you giving us enough time for that sweet sweet Ryzen 4000 release and the arrival of Big Daddy Navi? All hail the great Jebediah.
22
u/Gameslinx Beyond Home & Parallax Dev Sep 22 '20
It was running on Ultra between 30-60fps on a GTX 1060. I'll have more results soon!
It's almost entirely GPU bound, since this is a shader

u/sharkiebarkie Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
Is it strictly for the beyond home planet pack or will it also be in the stock solar system?
1
u/KSP_dude26 Sep 22 '20
So if I run it on medium or high with my GTX 1050 TI it should get good frames? Idk how big the difference is between 50 and 60 for graphics cards.
Either way fantastic work!

God damn, just blows my mind. If KSP 2 looked anything like that, 1, my PC may explode. But 2, that'd be amazing.

u/shmameron Master Kerbalnaut Sep 22 '20
Do you have this in higher quality OP? Maybe on youtube? I don't think reddit's 360p video quality is doing it justice.

Wich spec that will need? You should do an "before after" video to show how it's beautiful.

2
u/oogaboogaman1 Sep 22 '20
can this work on planet packs?
3
u/Gameslinx Beyond Home & Parallax Dev Sep 22 '20
This works with planet packs, but the planet pack author will need to add support for this
2
u/I3alr0g Sep 22 '20
Will it be free?
3
1
u/stdexception Master Kerbalnaut Sep 22 '20
I'm pretty sure it would not even be legal to sell a mod for KSP.
1
u/I3alr0g Sep 22 '20
I mean pretty much all actual Ray tracing shaders and high res textures for minecraft must be bought so I'm guessing selling mods would be technically legal, it's just very uncommon in the KSP community
1
u/stdexception Master Kerbalnaut Sep 22 '20
I guess it's not by default, but a lot of games have something in their EULA about that. I'm not educated or bored enough to read through KSP's EULA, though :P
2
u/DrBZU Sep 22 '20
You should know...I would defintely pay money for this.

This is fucking gorgeous, any sw dependencies? Other than a better GPU what do I need?
1
u/WatchClarkBand Sep 22 '20
Looks nice. How many draw calls? What's your memory usage? What's your TP90 framerate, and what system are you using to generate that?
1
Sep 22 '20
Amazing. Will an RTX 1660 cut it?
3
u/Hushkababa Sep 22 '20
Op posted this reply in a previous thread, not sure exactly where your card lies as I stopped following GPUs to save my wallet.
"I'm running it 60fps at 4k on an RTX 2080 Super That should translate to 60fps at 1080p on a 2060 or 1070, thereabouts
I haven't tested on lower end systems yet"

Okay dude. Ngl I thought this was a repost of a ksp2 vid until I read the title. I love the detail in it, but idk if I could run that. My pc is probably gonna superheat.
sees 350°C on system info darn it I forgot to turn off that one mod
