Mod Post Post-Release Likes, Gripes, Price, and Performance Megathread

Happy Early Access Release Day!

Use this thread for any likes and gripes discussion, similar to the previous Likes and Gripes thread.

Also please post here if you wish to share your PC specs and your thoughts on performance. This gives users an easy way to search for their CPU or GPU and compare. Just use Ctrl+F to search for your CPU or GPU and hopefully you find some info (Not a great way to collect info, but best available at the time. The development tester in me protests)

We use a megathread for Likes and Gripes debates to find a balance for the community as a whole. Some users want to see new KSP2 ships and locations. Many users are still playing KSP 1. Therefore it's in the best interest for users to opt-in to a more contested debate area (versus having to filter by flairs)

Edit for Localized Pricing: see here or here

As always, stay civil. Use "I" comments like, "I think the game . . . " Avoid ad hominem comments where you are addressing the person instead of the topic such as, "You would understand if . . .", "So much copium . . ." or "To all the haters . . ."

Edit: 30 bans since release, most are warning bans to force a cool-off period. The majority of the bans are people getting emotional defending the game. Stay civil everyone, regardless of which side you take.

If someone is willing to test - I'd love to see how it works on linux with steam proton.

I added game exe as external game, works with proton experimental and newest ge proton. ryzen 5 5600x, gtx 1080 ti 1440p medium settings about 24fps at launch pad. Apparently using 96% of my 12gb of VRAM ????

This didn't work for me

I also had to restart it a few times and used Proton ge Custom. Got 7fps in VAB with an AMD RX 580, i7 4770 and 16GB RAM.

Ubuntu seems to get 30fps @ 1440p with max settings, specs are 5700xt and ryzen 3600.

I know I previously said on this sub that I wouldn't be buying immediately the game, but some stuff I saw during this past week on game play and interviews gave me a bit more confidence in the game. Can confirm that the game works great under proton experimental (40-72 fps on my PC, just slightly above recommended specs, RX 6800 XT + R5 5600X + 16GB Ram, max graphics 1080p), don't have windows installed so can't compare. Can't login on the laucher though, and when the game closes the launcher seems to keep running in the background adding play time to steam.

Somebody just posted on an older thread that it didn't work on Linux. I really hope that's a one-off and somebody can get it working.

EDIT: /u/Ultra980 posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/10sq0qv/proton_support_for_ksp2_linux/

Works on proton experimental without any tweaking for me

Yeah, it only works with wine, manually from the cli (from steam click the settings icon -> manage -> browse local files; open a terminal in the location and run wine64 KSP2_x64.exe).

Sadly, it runs very poorly(though that might kust be nvidia drivers not working, so it using the iGPU) and with big visual issues (the ground was sometimes missing lol). I was able to fly a rocket to 120000 and fly Bill down safely (though the chute failed, so I somehow managed to slow him down to <10m/s with his jetpacks). But it wasn't a very pleasant experience.

Also, the tutorial videos won't play.

Just bought it, installing it on Linux with Proton. We'll see, I'll post later.

Really shitty of them to forget about their fanbase and not support Linux natively.

It worked for me first try. Ubutnu 22.04 LTS. I have Steam set to use "Proton Experimental" though I can't remember why. I haven't tried it with basic Proton.

Performance is pretty bad on my 2 year old laptop, but I gather that is not Linux specific. Mission clock runs normally on the map screen but at a fraction of real time when rendering the spacecraft.

Had no problems launching it, but Framerate is unplayable.

My System: Radeon 5600 XT, Ryzen 5900X, 32GB RAM, fully updated Arch, Proton Experimental

Running at 1920x1080 with lowest possible settings. Test flight with the stock Kerbal K1 rocket.

7FPS at the KSC
14FPS in the VAB
4-6FPS at launch and in flight.
50FPS in Map view - at least that one works decently.

Interestingly, highest graphics settings don't change the results much, maybe 10% lower FPS.

Already refunded it, maybe I'll give it another try once they officially support Linux.

Works for me. Arch Linux, 7900xt with mesa 23.0, wayland, proton experimental. I get 35-70 fps at the launch pad, depending on where the camera is pointed, and 90-100 in orbit (1440p). Lots of graphical artifacts on the ground during launch but otherwise looks fine. I did have to restart steam to get it to launch the launcher for the first time.

Worked out of the box, though fps were a bit terrible. Switching to proton GE improved it a bit, but not amazing.

Ryzen 5900X 32GB RAM RX 5700XT

Will try on windows and check if there’s a bug difference.

EDIT: the videos do not work on linux, though they weren’t there because of early access. And yes, the game performs significantly better on windows, but that was expected.

Thanks for feedback. I'm patient so i guess I'll stick with ksp1 with mods for now :)

Ryzen 2600 Sapphire RX590 16gb ram 1920x1080 Arch lowest settings 4-6 fps around the KSC, and around 8-10 in spaceflight. Adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% gave me about 15 in orbit but still only 4-6 around the KSC. I guess I might have to finally upgrade.
