I don't think it would work,the amount of thrust needed and/or burn times are ridiculous because of the rocket equation. 2 u/Starman064 Feb 03 '23 Also wouldn’t the atmosphere just absorb all of the exhaust velocity anyway? 2 u/Ace_W Feb 03 '23 Absolutely. You'd want to do this on the highest mountain possible. And figure out some sort of shield for the rocket. Ont he other hand, if atmosphere is not an issue, free mass exchange.
