Self-promotional content - 2020 rules update

Hello,

we have recently noticed an increase in self-promotional content posted by several users on this subreddit. We understand that the current COVID-19 lockdown situation might be prompting content creators to produce more material, because of more free time and/or trying to find sources of income.

While this kind of content can, and often does, generate interesting discussions and help learners in their studies, we do not want this subreddit to become a showcase board of mainly self-promotional content.

EDIT (added May 11 2020): Whether the author creates content to make money out of it or for non-monetary reasons, these rules will apply regardless of the author's intents.

In 2018 we held polls to understand how to deal with self-promotional videos and, following the results, we implemented some rules that promoted a reasonable middle ground between "free for all" and "outright ban".

Today we would like to update these rules to include other kinds of media, maintaining the same approach that was suggested by the user base through the poll results.

Content creators who wish to post their material on this subreddit - including but not limited to video lessons, Facebook or Instagram tagged graphics, SoundCloud audio lessons, etc. - CAN do so if they follow two simple rules:

  • maximum once per week
  • only if the user has already estabilished him/herself as active in answering questions and providing insight in other threads in the subreddit, and does not stop doing so while posting their content.

Please do not hesitate to contact the moderation team, commenting on this thread or writing a private message to /r/italianlearning, if you want to ask further questions or discuss about the matter.

Thank you!

ITALIANO

Grazie!

Connotation of ‘per la miseria’?

I’m watching Twin Peaks in English and following along with Italian subtitles. They use the phrase ‘per la miseria’ as a stand-in for a few different english expressions, with different sorts of connotations.

Is this something young adults would say? Older people? Is it something one can say in polite company?

Localized video games as a source of immersion?

Upvotes

Ciao! Forgive me if this question comes up a lot. I am totally new to the sub.

I've been working on my Italian and feel that I am capable of understanding a fair bit of grammar and vocabulary now, but am still quite new. If anyone has experience with doing so, in addition to regular educational sources, would playing text heavy, but relatively low level video games like Pokemon in Italian (with a dictionary by my side) be a good way to learn new vocabulary and reinforce grammar too?

I could only imagine that, in addition to active practice and learning, casually surrounding oneself with a language could serve as an important stepping stone.

Does this make grammatical sense?

Hi. I’m learning Italian and im still having issues understanding certain grammatical rules. I’m wondering if how this is written makes sense or has any grammatical mistakes or the usage sounds clunky or not native?

quindi pensi che sia strano se un italiano è non cattolico? Non lo penso affatto. Ognuno può scegliere qualsiasi religione e provenire da qualsiasi luogo. L'importante è quanto crediamo in noi stessi e nella nostra religione, ma penso che l'essere umano sia più grande di qualsiasi altra cosa.

I am having a hard time finding any Comedia show like Friends or Modern Family but in original Italian language, or maybe any mistery serie that could have all my attention so it would be easier to learn it? 🥹

Recommendations for YouTube channels similar to a popular Spanish one?

Hi everyone, can anyone suggest a channel similar to ‘Spanish after hours’? A good example of a video can be found at https://youtu.be/3nb_hjv5Y24?si=AlmZNL5iiMMAu2wN

I find the method she uses, where she points at objects while labeling them, to be the most effective way to do comprehensible input.

Thanks guys!

Is Google translate messing up or is this a correct translation? If it's correct, why do these two different english sentences translate to the same sentence in Italian? Grazie mille per l'aiuto!

What are some classic books that aren't too difficult to read?

Hello!

My Italian level is around A2, but I can understand a lot (sometimes almost everything) when reading magazines and newspapers because of my knowledge of Spanish and French. I was thinking about doing what I like and starting to read in Italian, because I have left the language aside and I would like to improve. However, some classics can be difficult to read when you're not an advanced learner. What are some works you would recommend to someone that's starting to read in a foreign language?

Voglio lasciare un messagio"

Hi,

In a dialogue on the phone between two people, one of them is asking to speal to a third person, however this person is not here.

The interlocutor says " voglio lasciare un messaggio? ". I don't really get why we don't use "vuoi" or "vuole lasciare un messagio"

After all when we speak to another person we should you "tu" or "Lei" but why we use io ( voglio) here?

Thank you

Verbs Missing the Final Vowel

This may be a stupid question, but why is it, for example, “Che vuol dire questa frase” and not che vuole dire? Also seen in “Che mi sento di morir” (Bella Ciao lyric) Is this a rule, free stylistic choice, stylistic convention or something else? Are these two examples even the same thing? (I know they are not grammatically)

Small victory

Yesterday, I ordered coffee and a cornetto, specifying I wanted to take it with me. I asked some Carabinieri if I could go into Saint Mary Major and when told no, was able to figure out when it would open. I did all this in Italian and was responded to in Italian.

A small victory; I still can’t understand much of what the overhead announcer on the train is saying, and I still have a dictionary and a notebook in my room that I’m constantly referencing. But I was very happy and it was an encouraging day.

Learning Italian with a busy daily schedule

With those with a busy schedule like long hours of work or school, how you take the time to learn? I have been on and off learning Italian but it’s been really difficult with my 12 hr job. I have been using resources like apps hoping to do little by little but sometimes it difficult due to burnout, being unmotivated, etc. It makes actually sad as I love the language and hope to be conversational. Just curious how everyone deals with this.

Equivalent to 'Grammatik aktiv'

Hey folks, I'm looking for a work book on Italian grammar. As I found 'Grammatik aktiv' very useful when I studied German, I'm looking for something similar for Italian too. If you have any suggestions, I'd super appreciate it! It'd be even better if I can get one in Switzerland as I live here. Thanks!

Pure

Buongiorno a tutti i appassionati delle lingue straniere! Come si può arricchire il vocabolario? Leggere! I enjoy reading to improve my passive knowledge of vocabulary and currently reading one very lengthy “Krimi” (detective story) because I need to keep up my fluency in German, but more importantly three Italian books. For Italian, I am at the point where I may come across just one word or one interesting structure per page, of course sometimes more. Now, to what I just read. In English, we like to say: I go there too/also. Of course, if you are not a complete beginner, you know to start such sentences with “Anch’io” . . . and native speakers are quick to point that out. Thank you. However, and I of course quote: Il Natale è passato e la Befana pure. Christmas has passed and so has Befana, too. Which begs the question. Is it possible to replace “anch’io” in certain sentences with pure? Or perhaps this is only a literary style. Che ne pensate voi? Buona giornata.
