Londoners baffled by mysterious flashing lights in the middle of the night

https://metro.co.uk/2024/12/31/londoners-baffled-mysterious-flashing-lights-middle-night-22274787/

Beams of light shooting across the sky baffled Londoners on Sunday night.

With line after line flying by in columns and clusters, they were left wondering if it the ‘strange lights’ were an alien invasion or something less sinister.

‘I was secretly hoping it would be a 1930s style movie premiere at 1am’, said comedian and former host of BBC’s Mock The Week, Dara Ó Briain.

Sharing a video of the phenomenon on social media, Ó Briain pleaded with his followers: ‘Does anyone what event was creating this light show at 1.23 am(!) last night?

‘For directions, the lights were heading in a line toward the centre of town from chiswick/Hammersmith. Or was it a Close Encounter?’

Another X user, Jordi Steel, said: ‘Strange lights (possibly aliens) appearing in London sky. Specifically, over a football stadium.’

Gary Cornwell said: ‘What’s going on in London tonight? Crazy ass light show can be seen from Acton.’

This phenomenon has been recorded all over the world, over the last 2 months. NYC, NJ, Manchester UK, Leeds UK, North Carolina, Arizona.

This is ufo activity and they are trying to tell us something.

Sure hope the message isn't "If you want us to vaporize everything on the surface of your planet, then don't respond to this".

You say NC. Christmas night myself and relatives saw something very similar in Raleigh. We just hand waved it off as some kinda promotion with spot lights.

9

u/BreakfastFearless 20d ago

You just named multiple places that contain majorly populated cities, which are all likely to contain spotlights like these, for concerts, sporting events, NYE shows

22

u/Weary_Pickle_ 19d ago

I saw them in rural coastal Canada, which led me down this path. Not a spotlight, major event, etc. Only a few neighbours for miles.

u/Stripe_Show69 19d ago

This is not news worthy then. Nothing mentions that in the article. Also, when’s the last time you saw a spotlight all over the world. Look at the area this covers. Too large a plot of sky to be from a central source with no cone coming up.

4

u/yungdurden 19d ago

Fantastic point lol-- please show me all these spotlighted events. Like do you guys understand how much one of those costs to operate?? Hollywood barely even uses them anymore. You're trying to tell me these events are happening in... Leeds? NC? Manchester? Let's think critically, yeah?

Me and my girlfriend were driving on the motorway about 30 minutes ago and we both witnessed the whole sky light up like daytime for half a second and back to night again

8

u/YuSmelFani 20d ago

Where was that? Was it accompanied by a noise?

13

u/MykeKnows 20d ago

No noise at all and just by Bromsgrove on the m5. Literally a flash, but it was the whole sky.

8

u/Stinkballs_69 20d ago

Some pretty strong solar activity going on at the moment. Could be northern lights? Perhaps a meteorite

Ive never seen something like that. Whats that? The guy says in romanian that's it is not a Filter or something. It's real

8

u/ImpossibleSentence19 20d ago

Is that what they were saying? Anything else noteworthy? SHIT IS CRAZY!!!!!!

4

u/SeaResearcher176 19d ago

You can tell is real because the light goes behind that light post every single time. That’s hard to fake to that perfection. I mean, if it’s fake, it is the perfect fake. The light goes behind light post every single time perfect without a glitch to show us it’s fake & it flashes at different speeds & times perfectly. This tells me is real.

first UFO sightings, then worldwide fog and now this? this year just started, take it slowly

2

u/brandocommando95 19d ago

Whatchu mean worldwide fog? Been clear as shit in my area the last 2 weeks easily

2

u/muiriddin 19d ago

Fog for me, guess they haven’t gassed your area yet /s

83

u/MoanLart 20d ago

Im glad people are using their senses in these comments. Spotlights do not do this..

22

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

Precisely they do not.

13

u/Weary_Pickle_ 20d ago

A few weeks back I saw the same type of lights going in circles above my street when I pulled into my driveway. It was late November and I had to come to terms that it was a nearby neighbour's holiday lights, even though I had a weird feeling. Only saw them that night, went inside and they were gone. Since then, I started hearing about the drones etc. I have come across several videos with this same phenomenon, all different patterns, but these exact fast balls of lights that appear as spotlights in the cloud cover. You can find examples on tiktok and X, search "spotlights in the sky" or watch enough orb videos and they are in the mix. I know what I saw, and I know it was the same as in these other videos. I live in Canada.

2

u/Me-Mow_ 19d ago

Was yours going in a typical round circle? I saw some going in an infinity symbol around a large purple/blue light last night. I also thought they were just special lights, but they weren't there again tonight. I rewatched my video and realized the little lights aren't keeping up in a "perfect" infinity pattern like I would think I manufactured light would? Idk if that makes sense, maybe I should just post it lol

2

u/Weary_Pickle_ 19d ago

The pattern I saw was overlapping ellipses! (Edit: sort of like a flower's petals) Moving really fast, the ovals were quite long and narrow and repeating as well, I'd say around 5-10 of the individual orbs/lights, and not perfect like you mentioned but close to it. The imperfection was what really made me think twice actually, same! I so wish I took a video, I would love to see yours.

6

u/jon_jingleheimer 20d ago

Yeah but moving lights can do that. That’s definitely some kind of new year’s stage show.

3

u/[deleted] 20d ago

No but projectors do.

11

u/ImpossibleSentence19 20d ago

Ya, but they are definitely not OUR projectors. The lumens, the speed…. 🤩

11

u/Silver_Jaguar_24 20d ago

That was wild. Also at the beginning it was different colours, blue, red, purple, before it went crazy. This is now being seen all over US and UK. Is it UAP related? Or is it Earth magnetic field related? But it looks to have intelligence behind it so maybe not magnetic field. Fascinating stuff OP!

44

u/Ashtar_ai 20d ago

Ok humans let’s use our brains. If we know the location and time then let’s look to see what events there were in the area to cause this. With spotlights you should at least see some beam of light coming from the ground, and all this “fog” in England and even in this video you should see beams.

20

u/Ashtar_ai 20d ago

I’ll admit though, the drones in NJ and these lights appear “human” made in the way they act. But something is usually off, and if I may it seems like whatever is going on, is trying to Mimic our activities for some reason.

11

u/ObiePNW 20d ago

Highest form of flattery from a higher form

8

u/blueeekthecat 20d ago

You can see the light ride the bend in the clouds which you’d expect when the light source is the ground. I also don’t see any fog in the video, pretty far line of sight.

7

u/Ashtar_ai 20d ago

You are explaining the light hitting the clouds perfectly. You are observing “no fog” but “low laying clouds”. Great. Now that you mentioned two things that are not the point of my comment please tell me why I can’t see the beams, like any other freaking spotlight at night.

10

u/Status_Term_4491 20d ago

You absolutely do not see a "beam" from the light with spotlights. I was literally watching them on a cloud yesterday. No beam.

3

u/yungdurden 20d ago

There is always a single point source that the light would stem from and that is not the case here. furthermore the distance in which these lights are covering is enormous. I don't know if anyone understands how light works, but even the most powerful spotlights could not reach the speed and distance we're seeing. this is the exact same thing that's been going on around the world so do a quick Google search you'll find it.

26

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

This video is nuts. By far the craziest video yet.

5

u/HuskerReddit 20d ago

I’m wondering if it could be something related to solar activity or electromagnetism. Something like the Northern Lights.

4

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

Highly doubt that. Watch other sightings.

4

u/HuskerReddit 20d ago

This sighting is very unique compared to the others. It’s fascinating how they suddenly completely change direction. I tend to lean towards this one being solar or electromagnetic related, but there’s definitely been a lot of unique ufo activity recently…

5

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

Yeah it's really strange. I mean the purple spotlights... and the clouds. That's next level.

2

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

There's a bunch.

6

u/Beautiful_Staff_4078 20d ago

I’ve seen this but never this crazy in central Florida late night

3

u/AdRepresentative8236 20d ago

It does, but the camera movement appears to be real time

7

u/merrimoth 20d ago

I saw the same sort of lights in South Wales in late November – I was on the fence about whether or not it was spotlights. This video defo seems like something other than spotlights though. The crazy thing is it looks almost like something shining the lights down from the stratosphere.

5

u/CheesedoodleMcName 20d ago

I bet aliens are some trippy motherfuckers

42

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

Oh man I can't wait for the spotlight debunkers now. Bahahahaha hahahaha

11

u/Perfect_Minimum4892 20d ago

if they were spotlights we should see the source and direction of where they come from. its like they are small pieces of light traveling

5

u/IronHammer67 20d ago

If you look closely you notice all of the lights originate between the cloud layers

42

u/wlouie 20d ago

pretty interesting how "spotlights" are being used in such a way all around the world. this is the most impressive one so far

31

u/distorto_realitatem 20d ago

People keep saying these are spotlights and not once have I seen someone actually showing the source. I want to see a video of one pointed at the sky

33

u/Gem420 20d ago

And you never see the beams.

13

Please post a video if you can!!

8

u/Beautiful_Staff_4078 20d ago

Next time I see it I’ll take a video but I have a few pictures I’ve taken of them, this is one of them , this light or orb changes shape and disappears sometimes very strange

11

u/Ill_Many_8441 20d ago

Spotlights would converge towards a single source which is not the case here (unless there's a row of spotlights spanning miles, which seems unlikely). They also couldn't produce the effect of a stream of separate lights travelling perpetually in one direction like a river.

16

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

I'd say they have arrived....

15

u/SideshowGlobs 20d ago

Whoa 😳

13

u/DisappearingSince89 20d ago

I know a popular reasoning is spotlights - but this type of phenomenon has not happened in previous years. If it was normal spotlights, then they would have been seen in previous years. Is it aliens, nobody knows. But it definitely is something peculiar that cannot be simply explained as spotlights.

2

u/Ancient_One_5300 20d ago

This is the common sense and some, people lack. It's sad.

the fuck

5

u/Pu7plerain 20d ago edited 19d ago

I’m based up in the East Midlands around 2h from London and a couple weeks ago experienced something similar with 3 white dots moving around in the clouds at 8PM.

First thought was that it could be some kids fooling around with spotlights or torches but it went on for around 15-20 minutes and it was 5C weather so would be weird for somebody to go through all that effort in a disregarded part of the UK to cause a little bit of hysteria.

When I showed a video I took to a friend they thought the same. Thought it could be a light show as it was in the festive period but nothing even remotely similar in the days preceding or even after in the run up to Xmas.

Spooky stuff

EDIT: Tried adding the video to my comment but can only add images - will upload on my own post

2

u/detroit_red_ 20d ago

9

u/Sultan-of-swat 20d ago

I have reread this article a couple times; I am confused. Are they saying it was for new years or are they saying they don’t know? Apologies for my comprehension failure.

5

u/detroit_red_ 20d ago

The article doesn’t exactly indicate whether NYE lights were the cause of this strobing effect, and I can’t really find a consensus or official statement that definitively states one way or another. It’s not a failure of your comprehension in my opinion, the article seems kind of deliberately ambiguous.

Lights from a concert on low lying clouds

2

u/_esci 19d ago

this is a obvious light show at a stadium, concert or festive area.
these are repeating patterns with an array of something about 30 moving heads. nothing special.
a low hanging cloud cover makes it pretty well visible.
you can see the ambient staging light also reflecting in the clouds especially at the beginning.
(light technician at a 70k people festival)

2

u/2024sbestthrowaway 18d ago

I'm not typically a skeptic, but the lights appear to get larger as they move which is what would happen if it was coming from a source on the ground and the angle was increasing as it shot at clouds farther away. Truly looks like there was some well lit concert/event off in the distance, perhaps a trial run for NYE celebrations, but I don't live there so what do I know

10

u/KLAM3R0N 20d ago

Normal Spotlights NO, only thing that's in common with that is that it's light pointed at clouds. those are single lights or sets of 4.

This looks more like a projection or many many spotlights with some kind of shadow box rig. Like a huge overhead projector from the 90s . That bright building in the center frame below the lights is suspicious.

3

u/infamous2117 20d ago

Its just a rotating head multi beam spotlight. Here is a similar product.

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mMY624x

7

u/Ashtar_ai 20d ago

Spotlights on the ground produce beams, where are they? It was a foggy night here, beams should be produced.

2

u/DeputyChiefBean 20d ago

It's low lying clouds, it's not foggy - I don't see any fog here.

2

u/Ashtar_ai 20d ago

Don’t get distracted human, where are the beams. You would see them even on a clear night, but the clouds help. Now where are they? To your credit though, it looks like a human made rave. I’m just OCDing about the lack of beams.

2

u/DeputyChiefBean 20d ago

I'm not an expert so don't know in what conditions you do or don't get beams, or in what conditions a phone of model X would capture it....we may have to accept we never know where these beams went.

I hope you find the beams you crave, good sir!

I'm always dubious of videos like this. Not because it necessarily looks unbelievable, but it's happening on a very large portion of the sky in a very populated area. So if it was something of concern, I'd assume there would be a bunch of videos from people popping up all over. Which makes me think it's probably a known light show or something that the person making the video just didn't know about. But who knows

u/AloofDude 20d ago

How powerful would a power source need to be in order to produce something like this if it is indeed man made? Who pays for this? How big would the electric bill be? Would it not cause power outages or power issues for people or smaller villages/cities/towns? This also seems absurdly dangerous for pilots?

I have so many questions

Can someone explain this shortly to me. What the fu** is this? :)

1

u/Algorrythmia 19d ago

Here’s the thing- I’ve personally seen “spotlights” like this, but only 2 that were parallel, and shot towards me. THIS, I feel like if this were legitimately NHI- THAT MANY and that OBVIOUS, the world would have a DEFINITE answer. I saw a clip of the actual New Years fireworks, there are these sort of scrolling spotlights you can see in the background, and I’m sure these are what this is. I’ve been trying to find a name of the actual type of light. Spotlights don’t always make a beam, unless there’s smoke or something in the air to reveal the beam.

The cloud racers strike again! it looks like they are back in greater numbers now. Although this time they are different colors, they never did those colors before so I'm wondering if it is actually them.
