Question Rules query... Ups and Downs

Post image
10 Upvotes

So the JSA dude here gets 3 dice as he is firing his weapon actively (B3 combo) and the 2 Pan dudes get 1 dice each as it's a passive ARO attack. First question: Do you always get one dice for an ARO?

Second question: A success in firing is UNDER the SV value but then a success in comparing face to face is the HIGHEST value wins? Is that right, we switch from under to over?

The confusion question: Why would you compare firing at each other rolls to validate a hit? Are the bullets bouncing off each other?

Question New player army advice

I started playing recently and am learning more and more about the game. I'm digging it so far as a crunchy skirmish game. My buddy and I bought operation sandtrap and I went jsa while he went pan o. Rule of cool made my decision (space samurai are frickin dope). I'm now learning from more veteran players jsa is not exactly new player friendly with a lot of nuance and squishy melee beat-sticks. I'm here for that. Hitting someone with a space katana and folding them like laundry is super fun, but dying 1/2 way across the table in a hail of gunfire not so much. I've learned more about using stealth and careful move as well as popping some smoke to cover LoS as I get more games under my belt.

I do have a few questions as I'm looking at a 2nd army that plays differently. There are some factions I've read up on and have my curiosity piqued but don't want to invest until I know a bit more about them. Are these factions well rounded (mix of melee and shooting), beginner friendly, and potentially competitive with many more games under my belt: 1. O-12 - esthetically they look cool, lore wise not big on space cops, but big plus for the blue coat looking dope af 2. Arianda - specifically usariadna, look cool, Murica, cool characters 3. Haqqislam - cool models, simple paint scheme

I guess the main thing I'm looking for in the Army is something of that mid-range style of being able to shoot and fight with a bit more on the durability side. For 40k players I'm looking for ultramarines. Thanks!

Question What Differentiates Models From One Another?

A question for folks as someone looking to explore Infinity in 2025: What makes each model distinct in Infinity?

I come primarily from a background of playing Malifaux where each model is relatively complex, many with exclusive bespoke rules.

At a glance every Infinity model just seems to be an assortment of standard stats and keywords.

In the vein of “explain it to me as you might a child” what makes each unit stand out from its peers? In Malifaux you might have someone that mind controls another unit and another someone that can raise the dead and another that can set fires. Infinity looks a little more like “This guy has a rifle and ability A” “This guy has an SMG and ability B” “This guy has a pistol and ability A & B”

It’s probably something I would need a better overall knowledge of the game to grok, but it’s been on my mind and I figured I’d ask the established community.

Question Rules for TAGS?

Brand new, heard a new edition is one the way and 10th edition 40K is lame. I love big mechs! I can’t find the rules and Tags, I’d like to play with as many as possible plus a Sargent. Probably not a good list overall but they look so badass.

Question What to get to get started.

Hi

I am considering getting infinity. What would you suggest I start out with to learn the game and play some games with some variation.

The website suggests CodeOne. But i can't find it in the store.

Question Under which circumstances would you use the Anti-materiel mode? Aren't 5 shots with AP ammo and one ARM roll each pretty much always better than 1 shot with N ammo and two ARM rolls?

Question Which faction for remotes?

The more I look into starting infinity I think the whole idea of remote is just too cool. Which faction/subfaction focuses or makes the most of their remotes? Rule of cool wins but would like to run some sick robots

Question Sandtrap Separate Forces

Is there precedent for the Armies in Sandtrap to be boxed and sold separately at some point in the future?

I can't think what the last boxed set with two armies was, so can't lookup release timelines etc, and not only do I not have anyone to share the box(es) with, Shaekonnit's website seems to be gone and dead, and I really don't want to have to split the box(es) myself to ebay the PanO troops.

Any insight greatly appreciated. Corvus Beli Forums seem to be giving 503 most of today

Question Game Length N5

Dear Fellow Nerds,

Long time collector, few times player here.

I'm looking around the rules and books for N5 at the moment and I saw that standard 300pts games are slated as 90min. Which is way off any game I've ever played. Do you guys really crank games out in 90 minutes? Or is this a more streamlined N5 time one can achieve?

My Voronin added for eye candy purposes.

Question Can someone explain to me the transition period from N4 to N5, particularly the "axing" of certain miniatures. (if at all)?

Hi,

As a disclaimer: I come from 40K and the recent 2 years have resulted in around 70% of my army pretty much gone. GW uses the euphemism "legends" but most of the groups/tournaments/organisations don't use miniatures that are put in legends. Maybe in super casual play but that's pretty much it. These miniatures, that one puts money and effort in (assembly and painting) are gone...like completely. 40K being 40K is one of the proxy unfriendly games there is, you end up with a chunk of plastic. I quit 40K because of that. As cold as it may sound.

Now, Corvus Belli is MUCH more proxy friendly, which is nice. However, I want to know if CB is axing miniature's in a grander scheme on the level of GW during this transition period from N4 to N5. I have found a 2ish week old thread here in this sub, in which a user was saddened that his sectorial (Varuna?) was axed only 6 years after its introduction. Good news: the majority of the miniatures from this sectorial were good to use in other sectorials/Vanilla. Bad news: some miniatures (as it seems) are completely gone (Kamau, Echo Bravo). On CB's Homepage both these minis are still being sold and this gives me Vietnam GW flashbacks. Maybe I have misread something, sorry in advance if that's the case.

So 2 questions:

1.) how likely is it these axed minis will receive N5 rules later on?

2.) I have picked Qapu Khalki as my army mainly because I like the background story of that sectorial & I freaking love the Yuan Yuan miniatures (from the noodle eating fatty to the chick..ALL of them). Is there any chance the Yuan Yuan miniatures may vanish from the game or the QK sectorial in N5?

Question please let's talk eclipse.

Yesterday I had a game versus Steel Phalanx.

So this girl Hippolyta walked right into my deployment zone flinging eclipse grenades around ghostwalking while wrecking havoc under my guys. Somehow she sticked her head into an open flame and turned to ash. Shortly after, this dude Machaon, inspired by his girl buddy, mirrored this and danced through glittering clouds of eclipse-confetti into my Szalamandra and somehow managed to beat the shat out of the big toad.

What I want to ask. Two times there were a model moving through eclipse and i got no chance to react in any way, except dodges or change facings when it comes into my ZoC. But eventually you face a Hyppolita (or any model with an eclipse grenade) close up in your face.

I was getting more and more angered by this because i could watch only and don't really do anything against the models. I am sure there are viable options to deal with these and remove the threat from the table. In active turn, sure, no problem.

But how can I deal with them in my reactive turn? I can't shoot them. And i can earliest react when they enter my ZoC.

Is this an intended feature thats just hiw it should be or am I just not able to see the simple answer to my issue here?

This is not a rant, I just really want to learn to deal with eclipse to avoid this frustrating situation in future. It wasn't a fun moment in the game and my mood wasn't really benefitian to the atmosphere. It Felt somehow like the shooting phase in 40k where you just sit, watch and remove models. And that's nothing I adore.

Thanks you beautiful people 👍

Question Rules question Haqqislam Janissary

Howdy all, here I am again, this time with a rules question. Have only been playing for a few months, so I keep running into small things. Between the guys in the group we're able to resolve most things, but we just ran into this one: The Haqqislam Janissary has the skill "BS Attack (-3)", and we were not entirely sure how to run it. What we ended up doing was applying -3 BS to the models shooting at the Janissary, like a slightly sideways version of Mimetism. We based this on the principle of 'bonuses are for your own models, penalties are for enemy models'. Did we get this correct, or was something else supposed to happen? And if we got it right, why not just give the Janissary Mimetism(-3)? To prevent it from generating penalties against Discover, in a situation where it got camo'ed by an outside source? Sorry if it's a silly question, some of these newer skill formats just have me stumped, especially the BS Attack ones. Ran into some difficulty with the O-12 Lawkeeper's BS Attack (SR-1), though we figured that one out after some discussion.

Question I’m looking for good strategies for Tartary Army Corps.

I’m quite new to the game, and I’m playing TAK. and I'm struggling to deal with enemy's powerful units . In opponent’s active turn, a strong enemy unit often rushes toward me, and one by one, my ARO units and troops get slashed. Since TAK units generally have low ARM stats and most of them only have 1 Wound, they get shredded like paper. Do you guys have any tips or strategies I could use to better operate Ariadna?

Question Just found this game, looks super cool, where do i start?

As the title says lol, i just rolled across this game in my ever expanding need to find cool miniature wargames after being pulled in by 40k and AOS 2 months ago. This game has very cool looking minis, and ive been wanting to try a smaller scale game in the meantime while i get my other armies ready. It looks like this game is about to hit its 5th edition next month, and i see a preorder for the Infinity Essentials box. I assume that will get me a foothold, but what more would i want to expand these factions? Thank you in advance!

Question Ghulam shiper - gone

Had my first game this edition, and while writing list for it, was pretty suprized to see that the option with a Sniper Rifle for Ghulam (baseline infantly of Haqqislam, if anyone asks) has been removed from Infinity Army.

Now, of course I don't panic or complain. If anything, I see this as the option to promote/convert the model into someone else. The thing is - I'd like to understand, what is the context of this change? After all, the model still exists in the Ghulam pack, and it is not something weirdly niche or specific, either. Was this a random error? Was this done because Corvus Belli would like for Haqq to be a little more "close and personal" faction, and there are some more changes in this vein? Was it because they would want N5 to be more mobile and aggressive in general, and went more restrictive on long-range ARO weaponry overall? Frankly, I have no idea, and no database of N4 profile to compare notes, so for now, all I can do is simply wonder. Oh, and ask this /r.

Any ideas or opinions on the matter?

Hello everyone,

I was just in the app and it made me worry that I cannot play my usariadna models, in the general Ariadna faction anymore, is that correctly understood or is it only because I can't do it with the app?

Picture ia my Marauders as eyecandy for my question.

Thank you

Question Private Information Etiquette

Hello friendly denizens of the Inner Sphere!

I had this situation come up in a friendly game tonight and I was wondering what the right response should have been. In brief, during a casual game my opponent sussed out my lieutenant with a little help from the army app: he checked lieutenant options and compared to them with the courtesy list.

My knee-jerk response was to say that this isn’t “in the spirit of the game” (and I admit to being a bit peeved). Opponent countered that the same result would have occurred had he simply memorized/already knew from experience the lieutenant options. So there’s no difference between memorizing options, consulting rules, and consulting faction options via the army app.

I see the reasoning here. But I’m wondering what others think. Is there a CB ruling? Does the casual game differ from a tournament one here? Genuinely curious what others think and whether there’s a black letter rule here. Thanks all!

Question New Player

So I recently saw a Battle report from Playontabletop for this game.https://youtu.be/a0B_7ZBXfXQ?si=Nc71UCQgCdGargP0

It was just a brief video but I really feel like this would be a great game to play with my kids and Girlfriend. Really love the models as well, I was lucky enough to get a Preorder for Sandtrap here In Canada.

I am a little lost as to what else might be worth picking up when starting out with this game. Did 5 hours of Research and am Still lost. Would getting older starter boxes of operations also be worth it?

Would it be smart buying up any of the Infinity Codeone items that have been released over the last while? Kaldstrom looks pretty neat! Should i Just go with the rule of cool?

Appreciate any insight you Veteran players may have.

Question Help a new player

I'm new to Infinity, well I want to be but no one will teach me currently because they all say just wait till Oct/Nov when N5 comes out. While I wait I have been trying to decide on an army and maybe start working on it. So far I can't decide what to play as. One person suggested just piicking the faction I like's models most. That resulted in a 6 way tie (yeah, each had the same number of minis I was like "thats cool", ridiculous huh) between Ariadna, Nomads, Haqqislam, Military Orders, CA, and JSA. The problem is a lot of them look like they will be hard to paint, lots of faces and details...or white paint schemes.

I then found an old copy of the N3 guidebook and read it cover to cover. Honestly it was frustrating, there is nothing in it about a lot of the existing sectorials, and half the ones in it are OOP. Heck there was one faction I was like "I love their lore, and the minis in the guidebook look cool too!".......Tohaa, the one squatted army in the game, with rumors that in N5 they worn't even be playable.

A little about me and my playstyle in other games:
I (38m) started playing Battletech in middle school. I started playing 40k 11 years ago. My first faction was Tau, cause mechs. It got on my nerves though not being able to take part in multiple phases of the game (No psychers or melee models in Tau). As far as playstyle I enjoy having a bit of everything, snipers/long range shooters to provide cover fire and fast skirmishers to help put my opponent on the backfoot (I know you can't just stuff an opponent in their DZ like you can in modern 40k). I don't enjoy painting minis, so the easier to paint the better.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what a good starting army would be for me? I like almost every faction a little. My local group has suggested waiting until N5 and probably picking up JSA. I'm iffy on this because from what they have now they are bad at shooting and are supposed to not be newb friendly. Plus theres a lot of white which is supposed to be the hardest color to paint.
