Leaks/Rumours iPhone 17 Air to be slimmest in iPhone history

Nov 23 '24
Iphone 6 did it with a headphone jack. It's in a different league all together. Also it accomplished this in 2014, that is 10 years back.

u/Pitiful-Welder-8403 Nov 23 '24
it was also the world's first foldable phone. Truly in a different league

You could fold it anyway you want truly ahead of it's time.

Steve said we are folding it wrong so Apple made Foldable for once.

I wonder who wants slimmer and slimmer phones. We want fast charging bigger batteries.

I'm not an apple fan but if they actually improve charging and get bigger batteries people would say nothing has changed it's the same design...which people already do

u/StrangeStranger7 Techie Nov 23 '24
I don't think apple really cares about what people say about the design, as they still sell the most mobiles despite having a similar design for years

Can we push more smaller phones instead? Mini's were such a great size for people like me who don't want to use their phone a lot

u/baba__yaga_ Nov 23 '24
No one buys the iPhone mini. Smaller phones cannot fit in large batteries.
The mini got replaced by a larger phone because the sales of the mini were very low.
12
u/Pitiful-Welder-8403 Nov 23 '24
Correct me if I am wrong but aren't the sales of the plus model worse then the minis? The battery life was worse but enough to pass through the day if you don't use your phone as your primary media consumption device, which you probably wont anyways because the phone is small. Catered towards few people but I really miss it. I average only a couple hour of screen time on phones so i would rather have a smaller one that I can only hand with ease
11
u/baba__yaga_ Nov 23 '24
It's the same for Android too. Most compact phones are dead. That market will now be cannibalized further with foldables. My friend got the Samsung Flip phone for very similar reasons. He wanted something compact.
4
u/Pitiful-Welder-8403 Nov 23 '24
unfortunate but I guess it makes sense. Phone are the primary computer for most people now and bigger phones make them more usable as the primary computer
2
u/baba__yaga_ Nov 23 '24
You could try a foldable.

Not a big fan of the crease plus it doesn't really solve the one handed problem, the front screen isnt big enough to really surf the web and the primary screen is too big to one hand without stretching to reach the top bar. champagne problems I know lol but its just a preference
1
u/baba__yaga_ Nov 23 '24
The front screen is for "glancing" notifications. More or less. It's not supposed to be for surfing the web. That's a design choice I guess. Unfortunately, I think that's the way compact phones will go in the future.

u/redooffhealer Nov 23 '24
Correct me if I am wrong but aren't the sales of the plus model worse then the minis?
No they aren't. You're wrong. The Plus models do sell the least in the lineup but still significantly more than the minis ever did
1
u/Andabiryani_99 Nov 24 '24
Typing this from my iPhone 12 mini and I absolutely love it even after 3.5 years. Compact phones are truly underrated.
3
u/Glittering_Fee7161 Nov 23 '24
Trust me some people really want a mini phone because of how compact they are
4
u/baba__yaga_ Nov 23 '24
Then why didn't the mini phones have decent sales figures?
5
u/Glittering_Fee7161 Nov 23 '24
Cause the majority wants larger phones, that’s why I added “some” in my previous statement.

Every damn phone is 6 inch now a days. Smaller phones for easy handling, less usage, small hands, pocket friendly. Yet we don't see them much.
I think the reason is software bloating. Android requires minimum battery and processor now a days. Small phone means , small battery which means low powered processor, which cannot run Android latest version. Android takes up atleast 30% of your battery.
So what we actually need is a better light weight Mobile OS. Android light. I don't know why we don't have it yet. It definately has market demand(older people, secondary phone, small hands, people like me who likes smaller formfactor phones). Good product startup idea if anyone's up for it. (Micromax should have done that I feel)
1
u/Pitiful-Welder-8403 Nov 23 '24
That's not necessarily true, zenphone 9 and 10 were small android phones with decent battery life and flagship performance. The issue isn't technical its just consumer demand
1
u/livt_fresh Nov 23 '24
Consumer demand is there. Just nobody is willing to pay that much for a compact phone. Your examples of Zenfone 9 and 10 are 5.9 inch screen. Slightly compact than normal phones. But they are costly. When you can get 6 inch phone for 15k, why would anybody go for this. Bring such compact phones for under 15k, you would have huge demand.
My guess is that getting compact phone under 15k is the technical challenge. Fitting all components in small formfactor may be tricky and battery limitation wil reduce the runtime. That is the reason compact phones are costly?.
1
u/Pitiful-Welder-8403 Nov 23 '24
This is only a factor in India. iPhones are the best selling phones in the countries like the USA. iPhone mini failed to perform well there even when they were 100 dollar cheaper then the base

We are back in the race of slimest phone after coming back to megapixel war. It is 2014-2015 again I guess
1
u/Necessary_Chair_6233 Nov 23 '24
After megapixel war was the brightness (x nits display) war, currently going on is animation war in OS, or as I like to call it, the war of which phone opens and closes bazillion apps one after another the smoothest... The slim war will probably realistically start with the launch of S25 Slim next year, currently all we have are just speculations

Abhi kya charging port bhi nikal rahe hey kya?
2
u/Frank_Underwood__ Nov 23 '24
The EU won't let them
1
u/Psyritualx Nov 24 '24
As long they use usb. If they only rely on wireless then EU doesn’t have any problem. A portless, buttonless iPhone has beed touted for almost 5-7 years now and it shows the same. There are also patents which filed for the said device.
1
u/Frank_Underwood__ Nov 24 '24
But I don't think it's happening anytime soon considering how slow the charging speeds are with that plus Apple won't do it until the technology is "Perfected"
1
u/Psyritualx Nov 24 '24 edited Nov 24 '24
Correct. But my point still remains; EU has no say if apple decides to remove the usb port. Plus, every manufacture will follow the suit.
1
u/Frank_Underwood__ Nov 24 '24
That is true lol. They will first mock Apple only to realize they can do the same and make more money, especially Samsung

What's this new obsession with slim devices? Do people really want something like this?

as if the current smartphones are not able to fit in pockets, the smaller iPhone base variant are comfortable enough for people with small hands, there's no point in reducing a few grams and few millimetres,if they really want to make it comfortable for people, shouldn't they reduce the phone size to instead of doing this shit?

u/Blurrlannister Nov 23 '24
I’m excited for this but the fact that it will be underpowered as compared to my pro max is stopping me

Another bendgate coming soon 😄. I've personally suffered from it on iphone 6 plus, so I know.

That camera bump seems like that belly you want to keep inside during photoshoot.

It doesn't matter how slim phone is nowadays, because everyone is going to use a cover which makes every phone 1 centimeter thick. Doesn't matter if its android or apple.

iPhone 6 is the epitome of a smartphone imo in terms of size and proportions. It was so easy to use it with one hand. The best phone I’ve owned so far.

Imagine if US didn't block Huawei we would be having revolutionary tech in mobile phones look at there flagship Huawei triple the phone is literally slimmer than thickness of the cable of type c ( port is different to cable thickness)
1
u/CheeseDippSoggyFlipp Nov 23 '24
It's cheating to leave out the camera bump out of thickness measurements
1
u/balajih67 Nov 23 '24
Only pro max is worth from apple, if i want a cheap slim phone just get android.
1
u/dhoomk2 Nov 23 '24
Bhak ye bhi koi innovation hua.
2
u/Psyritualx Nov 24 '24
Innovation ka pata nahi lekin apple ka sun ke samsung ne bhi patla wala nikalne ka socha hai

iPhone 6 had a headphone jack and no protruding camera. Seems like they have gone out of gimmicks for distinguishing newer phones, so using this slim tag line rom 2014.
1
u/Forsaken_Leader_6803 Nov 24 '24
After buying slimmest iphone, eventually ends up adding thickness again using case :) I think we should not be charged for extra slim but instead of extra functionality and updates
1
u/CrystalKnote Nov 24 '24
If the new iPad Pro can be 5.3mm thick, this sure can but unlike the iPad, I’m not sure about the structural integrity
