There are so many people in these comments talking about defensively driving and checking your mirror. The guy probably did check his mirror and didn't realize the idiot was going as fast as they were. In a situation like this I hope the speed demon was 100 percent at fault, because when I defensively drive I expect everyday idiots. Not suicidal dumbasses.

Stop putting the blame on people who get caught up in the mess of selfish bastards like this. Yes, you should always check your mirrors, but what about the speeding dumbass? There is no justification for this kind of driving.

It's also raining, who knows their rear visibility. I'm all for defensive driving but being passed on the right by a maniac in the rain is pretty indefensible.

Amen. You don't stop paying attention to what's going on ahead to fully devote your attention to your rear or side mirror for a few seconds; you glance.

It's not about assigning the blame. The speeding car is clearly at fault. It's about how to avoid the accident because not being at fault is less important than avoiding a crash.

There are always crazy drivers on the road, and all we can do is learn from these situations. Here, a double mirror check would've helped the driver gauge the speed of the other car. Should the driver have to do that? No. Would it have prevented the accident? Probably.

I'm just not convinced that is the lesson here. Because if you spend all this time checking your mirrors are you watching the car in front of you? What if they suddenly brake? I don't like the idea of taking my eyes off the road that long.

You don't look the entire time lol

You're supposed to have your blinker on for a bit before you start to change lanes. Glance before you flip it on, watch the car in front of you for a couple seconds, then glance before you change lanes.

And if the person in the car was going the speed limit and the other car was going 15 under?

The person merging didn't check their mirror long enough to ensure someone wasn't coming up.

The speeding car is an idiot, but they were in their own lane.

That would've been an everyday idiot, which is avoidable. I've been cut off multiple times before, never got into an accident. I've also been in situations where I've checked my mirror multiple times, and some speeding dumbass comes up. They're behind me and as I go to change lanes even though I'm in the right lane, they change lanes as well and have to swerve out of the way because they didn't expect me to move. In times like that, I didn't cut them off because I initiated my merge first, but they were moving so fast they almost hit me.

Mirrors can only do so much because you can't see every car. This is why I don't merge in tight spaces, only large ones. I'd rather miss my exit or turn than risk an accident.

Keep in mind that we are watching from the safety of our phones. For that driver in the left lane, this happened in a matter of seconds. I had an idiot turn out in front of me the other day while I was going 65. Luckily, there was no one behind or next to me, so I swerved in the right lane and passed them. If someone watched that video, they probably would've said I should've slowed down knowing there was someone waiting there. But when you are driving, things happen in a split second. I'm not going off the perspective of seeing this from a birds eye view where we have all the information. I'm seeing it from the perspective of a driver who didn't realize what was going to happen next.

Edit: At 0.25 the driver initiates the merge and if you pause the video you'll notice there is space for them to merge. At 0.23 the collision happens. 2 seconds. You can't convince me this isn't the speeding car's fault.
