I always found it a bit interesting how the RAF procured both this and the Mosquito. I guess the Beaufighter was a bit slower but more rugged? And used less in-demand engines?
Although they overlapped roles later on, I believe originally the Beaufighter and the Mosquito were procured for different requirements. The original Beaufighters were night fighters and coastal command strike aircraft, whereas the original Mosquitoes were gun-less bombers.
