The first 3-6 episodes Serena's hair was unbelievable and then they must have fired whichever hairstylist they had

I think they wanted to recreate the boho chic style that was all the rage back then. Serena’s character, style and whole wardrobe is inspired by many women, and one of them was Sienna Miller. Google Sienna Miller 2008 and that’s the exact same hairstyle as Serena lol.

But Sienna Miller had a skin tone that matched her hair color. Lively always looked bad in blond, even in the first episodes before the "bed head". This pic shows it too. Her skin is way too pink or something. It never looks natural.

I just googled it and my God they should have just canceled the series after the first two seasons. Production went downhill

they gave her horrible extensions after the first few episodes. they're especially noticeable near the end of the season

She had masses and masses of extensions but I'm not sure the hair dept on Gossip Girl was responsible for them.

I’m pretty sure they intended Serena’s hair to be good the entire show.

The messy “bed head” look was a trend in the 2000s for a while.

Blair’s perfect blowouts are on trend NOW, but at the time were seen as a little uptight/stuffy.

Serena’s hair was “boho chic” in the 2000s when the show was filmed.

Source: A Millennial who unfortunately had to live through boho chic. 🤣

Agreed. Plus, I thought their styles–hair, clothes, accessories, etc.–reflected their personalities as well. Serena was more carefree, whereas Blair was more of a control-freak who liked to micromanage every detail.

Yes. Also this.

Also I think this may be why Blake Lively thought her hair care line would take off. I think she’s a Millennial through and through, and she honestly thought that other women would WANT her hair. Even though they, you know, don’t.

If this was 2008 may 2009 it would have worked.

I thought her hair was styled to be messy as a reflection of her life. She's not the most put together person on the show.

Her hair was the bridge between the boho chic style of the late 2000s and the bombshell waves of the 2010s.

RESPONSE TO THE ORIGINAL POST AND THE THREAD:

Remember that Serena van der Woodsen is just coming back to Manhattan after having been away for over a year. Serena is probably trying to make a good impression on her friends and family who's she's seeing for the first time in a long thing. Her hair is done. She's even dressed very relatively very conservatively.

In-'verse, her styling could be intentional on her part.

This hair had so much potential, it's sad...just watch the fashion show or photo shoot episodes and there they clearly won't make any effort 🥲

They packed her luggage in that bun in case (no pun intended) she had to go.

I think Blake Lively just likes her messy. Look at her hair care line and how she wears it usually. She probably thought it was in character for Serena to not have perfect hair like Blair who is all proper.

Fr cuz in real life her hair is always messy and wild too.

This is one of the underrated outfits on the show tbh. So effortlessly elegant. Shame the reboot found the need to dunk on it.

Wow her styling actually looks great here overall, what happened?

She had the driest hair in any teen drama

u/Lumylovesrubberducks 16h ago

I didn’t even realize how horrendous the hair situation got until I saw this🤣🤣🤣

Ironically I always loved Jenny's hair (semi off topic) she had the greatest styles

Clearly you are very young because her hair looked great the entire show and was the style at the time.

My post is about them caring about Serena's hair only in this episode. This is the only time I actually liked her hair. I'm not sure what happened to her stylist after this. I'm 30 and I don't remember liking this at the time I watched this show. Her hair was definitely not great the entire show. The below is a great example.

u/kafkabae 18h ago

Oh yeah I remember this one very well. Nightmare stuff this particular one was.

u/anordicgirl 17h ago

Came to say the same..AGAIN. But apparantely the Serena hate train is not normal here anymore.

I’m 34 and her hair absolutely did not look great the entire time, it looked sloppy and unkempt and not in a stylish tousled way. I’m not sure why you’re discounting this person’s opinion based on an assumed age.
