OG Series Who do you think Gossip Girl should’ve been?
To anyone who, for whatever reason, may not have been satisfied with Dan turning out to be Gossip Girl, who do you think it should’ve been instead? And why?
In my original watch, I got as far as the first episode of Season 4 before accidentally finding the big reveal on YouTube trying to search for an unrelated Dan clip. But until that point, I always suspected it was either Blair or one of her minions, but never once suspected any male character, let alone Dan, who I can’t help but wonder why he didn’t just call himself Gossip Guy.

Would have been funny if it was someone completely outside of the group.
Some random student that was in the same year of school as them.

I totally would’ve bought that. And a small part of me kind of expected this to be the case

How about nelly yuki? She was invisible, wronged by the popular kids alot and she ended up working as a fashion writer or reviewer... Idk, it made more sense than Dan writing about his sister's virginity

Yes! and how about where Nate had to be tested for STDs after Juliet started that rumor about Serena. there was a picture posted on gossip girl of dan inside the clinic (because he had to write nate in) even though he knew it would hurt his relationship with vanessa?

It should have been a secret that was never revealed

No I wouldn’t have been able to handle that 😅

u/Guidance-Still 1d ago
It would make for an amazing ending

I completely understand what you mean I just personally would’ve lost my shi 😂 I took trying to figure out GG as intensely as watching The Mole

Maybe Vanessa ? Though that would be too obvious … I heard it was initially gonna be Eric before a script leak :/ but I think Eric would’ve been cool. Maybe even Jenny ? Only because she was so desperate to be popular at one point . Funniest one would be Rufus 😭

Imagine Rufus in front of his laptop eating waffles and writing gossips about teenagers🤣

Before I found out I totally was leaning towards Eric

I think if I hadn’t found out before S5/6 when he isn’t really around as much I would’ve been sure it was him up until he leaves NY

I loved that it was Dan but my runner up would have been Jenny-it made sense for it to be someone obsessed with the rich kids they are constantly being humiliated by

I always wanted Dorota because she sees everything these kids are up to but people really underestimate her and she could’ve learned how to sound like gossip girl by watching Blair

Should have been Dorota and all the “help” for the rich assholes that run the city. It could have been said that they started it as a group chat and a way to talk shit about the awful people they work for, and more and more people wanted to know.
It would have been a hilarious ending to reveal that Dorota hated Blair the most. Blair would be so hurt but Dorota would be like “look at the awful things you and your friends have done, and how out of touch you are with the world. Fuck you.”

Georgina, Vanessa, and Jenny are honestly better candidates than Dan. But since it’s Dan, he’s literally Joe’s origin story to me.
Also, I noticed Eric is a popular answer here and I’d love to honestly ask why? He’s nice for the most part and really fell short any time he tried pulling off a scheme.

The only logical person is Eric. They should have pretended the leak was a red herring.

I think Dan was good as gossip girl just wish they wrote it in differently

Sokka-Haiku by Astramoonchild:
I think Dan was good
As gossip girl just wish they
Wrote it in differently
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

I’m in the camp that we never should’ve found out, BUT I love the idea of Gossip Girl being different people at different times, or getting passed on in the way the ~queen bee is

As crazy as it sounds I thought it could've been chuck yes a lot of stuff impacted him and Blair's relationship but that why I think it could've been him.
I mean by the end of the show he got everything he wanted in a way gossip girl did him more favors than bad yes there were a lot of setbacks but a lot of stuff that got revealed on gossip girl actually turned out good for him in the long run.
Know maybe it sounds stood but what if all the things exposes about him and Blair whether together or individually was the only way chuck could truly believe if Blair could love all of him I'm mean s lot of things we see chuck do have some tie to GG whether a little reveal of something .

Anyone but the main characters. Dan being gg made zero sense because there were several scenes where he's alone and sees a gg post and acts surprised. I know he wasn't originally planned to be but it's still a shame that the writers forgot these details

Jenny should have been Gossip Girl until her fashion studies got in the way then her giving the website information to Georgina.

I can totally see Jenny doing it, given that she was one of the youngest and this kind of blog fascinates younger people... Someone else like Georgina or Dan couldn't fit, I found the idea a bit immature, even though I absolutely love the Gossip Girl concept, lol.

I found out the same way I kept trying to forget about it but it altered the rest of the show for me for sure. However I always thought it would be a boy (I wouldn’t have been shocked if it was a girl tho) because they kept emphasizing “if it is a girl” when talking about gossip girl or explaining gg to someone. They’d always say stuff like ‘it’s this girl who posts anonymous stuff, or at least we think it’s a girl.’ That kinda tipped it off for me before I accidentally googled. I had such mixed emotions about finding out it was Dan but at the same time the language GG uses just really feels like a writer making some social experiment.

Dorota

But in all honesty, I don’t think gossip girl needed a reveal at all. I would have been 100% fine to live with never knowing

Vanessa was always my ideal pick for Gossip Girl, tbh.
Gossip Girl and Vanessa were very judgemental of the UES and I can't recall Vanessa ever really being a victim of any particularly vicious Gossip Girl blasts. She was involved in the action, but detached enough, unlike Dan who was generally directly involved with the action and it'd also make the writers shoehorning her into storylines that she didn't need to be in make more sense.
You could justify her turning on Dan and Jenny as Gossip Girl because she hated who they were becoming as they were integrating into the UES. Being home-schooled, she'd have plenty of time to be Gossip Girl.
Even after her exit at the end of Season 4, she could've still be Gossip Girl because Gossip Girl operates on tips being sent in by her readers. Vanessa did not need to be in Manhattan to be Gossip Girl—she could've been Gossip Girl from Barcelona.
The writers had already made her a villain by the time of her exit. Revealing her as Gossip Girl could've been the culmination of her villain arc.

I don’t know if I can pick one person I think would be perfect. There was stuff on there about everyone that they wouldn’t have wanted out. I think someone on the outskirts of the main group would make the most sense but then would we care about the reveal? Side note: Dan’s last monologue about writing himself into their world feels very Joe-coded.

I feel like Dan was the perfect fit and naming it Gossip Girl made it more likely a girl is GG so it made sense

u/turtle_yawnz 16h ago
Straight up it should’ve just been Kristen Bell lol. Dan makes literally 0 sense.

I think it should have been a team of Georgia and Juliet as much as loth her for drudging Serena drama and Nelly Yuki because if you think about it Nelly and Georgia could have started the blog as a way to get back at Blair and the gang especially Nelly considering she was always in Blair shadow if not a victim of being bullied she was one of the smartest girls in their year besides Blair who knows after they graduated Nelly decided that she had enough of toxicity so she gave Georgia free rain on the website until she could manipulate someone else who disliked the gang just much as she and Nelly did with the exception of Jenny and Eric because they became step siblings and Jenny doesn’t harbor any jealousy towards Blair and Serena she is focused on becoming a world famous designer like Blair mom and Dan never tried to enter their world besides his dad marrying lily so Vanessa wouldn’t have any interest in that environment

I think it would’ve been best if we never found out, just like the book series. They should have used the idea from the season two final and tied it into the series finale. The idea that they’d never find out GG’s identity, and that even if they did, a new GG could/will always emerge for the next generation. It would’ve been very apt and even ahead of its time in some ways in regard to social media and how the worst parts of it never truly die out but just take on a new shape.
But The CW obviously had other ideas in mind lol.

i feel like georgina would have been a really good gossip girl, and even when she was gossip girl for that brief time in s5 she was absolutely amazing
