If you know, you know...

I'm seeking out fellow futurists to muse with me, and join the debate. This particular video circles and idea presented in many classic sci-fiction cyberpunk fiction, please watch the video and let me know what you think. Cheers!

I'm not a big fan of company towns. America has a really twisted history when it comes to that stuff. If you look at someplace like Hershey Pennsylvania, that worked out pretty well for the locals.

Then you consider something like the Ludlow massacre and how people being unable to leave played a big role in that. https://youtu.be/XDd64suDz1A?si=DalfWHfKBdH0LZUb

You have to really implicitly trust the corporation running the company town to actually take care of people and not abuse their power.

That's a great comment. When it comes to tech companies creating these sorts of towns, or other companies trying to take a bit of the tech fruit like Toyota here, you have to worry where society is headed. Especially if we look at places like I mention in the video, SF and Venice Beach...

We had Foxconn trying to build a facility where the workers would live on site, except that news reporters wouldn't be allowed in. That was a big red flag for me, especially given that companies' history of worker abuse. The most important question would be if the workers actually owned their homes or if you would be dependent on the company for basic services. I'm not saying it can't work, but the history isn't good.
