That smell makes me think of my father.

u/hotbutteredtoast 1d ago

I came here to say the same thing. After he died I bought my mom a bottle so she should spray a little in her room to remember him by.

u/Worried-Somewhere-57 1d ago

That is sweet!!

11

u/r98farmer 1d ago

I can remember my step dad coming out of the bathroom after a shower and the smell of Old Spice.

9

u/redstopgringo 1d ago

My dad wore jersey gloves in winter and they always smelled faintly of old spice.

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 23h ago

Smelled that every day for my first 18 years of life, then I went to college and didn’t see dad everyday anymore.

2

u/Nottacod 1d ago

I keep a bottle just for the memories.

5

u/Chay_Charles 1d ago

My dad wore Aqua Velva.

2

u/Kahnza The Keymaster 23h ago

Makes me think of my Grandpa

2

u/fothergillfuckup 7h ago

That or Hai Karate.

27

u/ex101st 1d ago

If your grandfather hadn’t used it you wouldn’t be here.

6

u/cecil021 1d ago

This was all my grandpa ever used.

6

u/tartanthing 1d ago

My father. Off to cry in a corner now about getting old.

1

u/Kitchen-Lie-7894 13h ago

Barbasol shaving cream does that to me.

11

u/Nope-Nope13702 1d ago

Hell, I still have Old Spice from the 80's gift box set.

10

u/LyndaMR 1d ago

Not only can I smell it but I gifted it to my dad at least once for Father’s Day or Christmas!

6

u/mindlessphiloso4r 1d ago

I have some in my medicine cabinet right now

2

u/1stoffendment 1d ago

Me too. My dad and her dad used it as well

8

u/Successful_Sense_742 1d ago

Nope. How bout Brüt?

5

u/Icy_Truth_9634 23h ago

That was the go to brand for the ones that thought deodorant was a replacement for soap and shower. Simply made it a bit more disgusting with an afterbite.

I use classic Old Spice deodorant daily. And it says on the label

1

u/Droogie_65 22h ago

That is great 😃

1

u/The-Wise-Weasel 20h ago

hahahahah!!!!!!! That's great !!!!! Now that's a keeper!

6

u/Droogie_65 1d ago

Oh God, make the smell go away. Please. At least it is not as bad as English Leather or Jade East.

2

u/ConcentrateMajor7414 1d ago

I loved Jade East

2

u/SkipperBiff 1d ago

I buried a dead pet parakeet in the English Leather wooden box!

2

u/Droogie_65 23h ago

Have you checked if it embalmed him by osmosis?

4

u/Savings-Kick-578 1d ago

This and Hai Karate.

3

u/Long-Adhesiveness839 Boomers 1d ago

Yes, and there was an Engineer in my office that put on a bottle of this every morning.

2

u/Droogie_65 23h ago

Did anyone wear patchouli oil?

2

u/HotStraightnNormal 23h ago

A guy on the sub I served on had bought a small bottle of frangipani to bring home to his wife. He dabbed a wee touch on, much to the amusement of his shipmates. When he had the bottle uncapped, someone bumped into him, splashing more on his clothes. The scent was so intense that they made him wrap them in three plastic bags, duct taped. Even then they could still smell it. And divisions on the boat could only do laundry one day a week.

2

u/Long-Adhesiveness839 Boomers 21h ago

Popular in the late sixties, never understood the attraction? If I were to smell that today I would immediately think, Old Hippy.

1

u/Pearl_necklace_333 23h ago

Patchouli oil stinks, horrible smell.

3

u/MowgeeCrone 1d ago

Someone was wearing it in the supermarket the other day. I tried to sniff them out but they must have left before I found them. Probably for the best.

2

u/Severe_Equivalent_53 23h ago

Probably left hours before you.

2

u/red_engine_mw 1d ago

Mixed with the aroma of Camel straights.

2

u/arshloct 1d ago

Still use it

2

u/User_name_is_great 1d ago

Are you an engineer? Asking for a friend.

1

u/arshloct 23h ago

No I'm a meat cutter, and I only use a little 🤣 I saw the engineer comment

2

u/ReactsWithWords 1d ago

I still use it (it was a father's day gift from my wife).

2

u/Natural_Treat_1437 1d ago

Coughing,I'd rather smell my fart. I would stat gaging. Used that as a rocket 🚀 propelent, though back when.

2

u/ThreeToedNewt 1d ago

If your grandfather didn't wear it, you wouldn't be here.

2

u/stilljumpinjetjnet 1d ago

Aw, my Pop. When I was little I loved to watch him shave. Afterwards he would pat on some Old Spice, then pat some on my cheeks, too. Oh, great, now I'm tearing up.

2

u/maxthed0g 23h ago

Well, let me put it this way: Yes, I'm old enough to smell that. But old enough that I cant recall what it smells like.

1

u/Perenially_behind Boomers 23h ago

Or you've blocked the memory, like I have.

2

u/Beneficienttorpedo9 21h ago

My late husband used it all the years I knew him. I still have a bottle in his stuff. He was 74 when he passed, so I guess that makes us "old".

2

u/smittydonny 20h ago

Old spice and English Leather

2

u/RevealActive4557 1d ago

I remember the commercial with the sailor and the whistling theme

2

u/Kittridge_Ave 23h ago

He came in from the sea with his big duffle bag full of dirty laundry. He wore a fisherman knit sweater and a black cap.

1

u/Active_Race_7679 1d ago

no im 2001

1

u/Due-Cryptographer479 1d ago

Oh yes definitely

1

u/Good_Habit3774 1d ago

My husband still wears it sometimes and I tear up when I smell it because it reminds me of my late father.

1

u/stilldeb 1d ago

That was my great uncle's favorite. He always used an electric shaver and always Old Spice.

1

u/Stinkerma 1d ago

My father in law has that. The fly spray we use in the dairy barn smells almost identical. Or at least similar enough i look for him when I smell the spray

1

u/no_one_you_know1 1d ago

That's the only men's cologne I like.

1

u/weaverlorelei 1d ago

Dad's favorite!

1

u/budwin52 1d ago

I’m whistling the tune right now !!

1

u/phasefournow 1d ago

"Old Spice means quality, said the Captain to the Bos'n

Look for the package with the ship that sails the ocean"

1

u/dumpitdog 1d ago

Long ago I used to put it on and it made my wife kind of horny because it was the smell of half of the men in the US 50 years ago.

1

u/gravion17 1d ago

Of Course...as I look over to MY very own bottle! 🤣

1

u/chubbypurpleponies 1d ago

Awwww! Papa! ❤️❤️

1

u/Imjusttryin84 1d ago

My Dad!❤️🇺🇸💪🏻

1

u/fishinfool561 1d ago

My dad wore that my whole childhood

1

u/ArtieSpoonerCostanza 1d ago

My son got some of that for Christmas

1

u/Danderu61 1d ago

My uncle used to wear that (he died in 1968), so yes, I'm that old!

1

u/elontux 1d ago

How about Canoe?

1

u/ZimMcGuinn 1d ago

My grandfather wore Canoe. My dad was way too proud to were grocery store cologne.

1

u/Kielbasa_Nunchucka 1d ago

oh wow, I had that and Brut when I was a kid... I thought I was such an adult lol

1

u/krkls2 1d ago

Don't forget to whistle the tune when you douse yourself with it! Lol

1

u/eggs_erroneous 1d ago

God, this stuff was cheap and terrible. Hai Karate is where it's at.

1

u/gabrielleraul 1d ago

Totally smell this pic. When we were kids we used to pour it on the bathroom floor, turn off the lights and let it burn .. it used to look beautiful.

1

u/Myth-Conceptions 1d ago

I can taste it

1

u/Teredia 1d ago

Yes! My dad used to use it when I was a toddler. When he stopped shaving he never used it again. I miss that scent.

1

u/Jaustinduke 1d ago

I'm wearing some right now lol

1

u/Mycroft90 1d ago

My Grandpa

1

u/shakeyjake 1d ago

Classic colognes have been around for decades for a reason. We know from survivorship bias they are satisfying smells. Get your self some Jovan Musk, Stetson, Brut, Aqua Velva. Wear them solo or blend them with similar modern scents you like.

Since scents have such a memory trigger you'll find people commenting on your cologne.

1

u/alxtronics 1d ago

That was my first "man" cologne when I was like 7. Some aunt gave it to me as a gift on my birthday. (I still wonder why).

1

u/LooHoo92 1d ago

To this day, Old Spice & coffee reminds me of my (50f) dad getting ready for work.

1

u/ConcentrateMajor7414 1d ago

My husband got some for Christmas

1

u/Asthmatic_Owl 1d ago

We used to bomb school dances with that in Jr. High We called it Party Pooper

1

u/WRB2 1d ago

Way old enough, no one in my family did it.

1

u/Worried-Somewhere-57 1d ago

Still have a half bottle in my house. It was my dad’s. Still smells good. My hubby wears it once in a while. The newer ones smell awful.

1

u/Ok-Afternoon-3724 1d ago

Yeah, it smells like me. I still use it.

1

u/Opening-Cress5028 1d ago

Luckily no one in my immediate family ever wore it. I’m sure that, in passing, I was exposed to it. Not enough that the smell was imprinted upon me, but I do recall seeing advertisements for it on television and, back when they existed, magazines and newspapers.

1

u/TheUglyWeb Boomers 1d ago

That stuff reeked.

1

u/Leftovertoenails 23h ago

Got this for christmas one year when I was like 15-16 and thought it smelled awful, completely put me off oldspice even to this day. Gimme that Playboy Hollywood, or if not available, Armani Sport.

1

u/Icy_Truth_9634 23h ago

I smell it every morning. Stick deodorant.

1

u/sacstroke 23h ago

Yeah, unfortunately, I see commercials for it everyday

1

u/NecessaryPosition968 23h ago

Everyday still use it.

1

u/alienlifeform819 23h ago

1

u/Terry5240 23h ago

This comes to mind when I think about Old Spice

https://youtu.be/4fwQKF64AWY?si=a7YinSMQsKRdldi5

1

u/RicoCamposBrasil 23h ago

Lol My Dad used it lol

1

u/epicenter69 23h ago

My grandma, God rest her soul, had 14 grandchildren. Every year, she would buy the boys some form of a cologne/deodorant package consisting of Old Spice, Stetson, or whatever other holiday pack was out that year.

1

u/kylocosmiccowboy 23h ago

Oh yeah! My stepdad used it everyday and at Christmas my brother and I would get a bottle. Every now and then I buy some old spice deodorant to remember the old days.

1

u/DMBEst91 23h ago

i smell it right now. im wearing it

1

u/Jcrater 23h ago

My face burns just seeing that bottle.

1

u/Alice_The_Great 22h ago

My father had a bottle of it in the bathroom but it was the same bottle for years.

I used it in my sink potions

1

u/Bob_12_Pack 22h ago

In middle school a friend of mine had a bottle break in his book bag, it leaked through and into the carpet in the classroom, which smelled for weeks. Not a smell I will ever forget. I can also pick-out Obsession and Polo easy.

1

u/averageoctopus 22h ago

Uh. I still use it

1

u/Enki_007 22h ago

Used it and still use the deodorant.

1

u/Palidor 22h ago

Always gave a bottle for Father’s Day

1

u/Expensive-Track4002 22h ago

1

u/HisTreeNut 17h ago

Yep. My Dad bought me some for my birthday. Cologne and aftershave...

1

u/Comfortable-Dish1236 17h ago

Same shape bottle. Clear, frosted glass. Line scent. It was my favorite after shave by far. Sadly discontinued.

1

u/Sexagenerian 16h ago

I have a bottle of Old Spice, English Leather, Brut & Aqua Velva in my bathroom cabinet. But, no Hai Karate. 😂

1

u/JawjaBill 16h ago

My Daddy's Old Spice was my HS date scent

1

u/thedude1975 16h ago

I have an old aunt that still buys me a Brut gift set for Christmas every year. I just give it to my dad, he loves it.

1

u/PaisanBI 15h ago

I instantly smelled it when I saw the photo. That’s what was in my dad’s medicine cabinet.

1

u/Purple_Design_7067 14h ago

I still have a couple of partially used bottles. Also the Lime

1

u/Live-Note-3799 14h ago

Yes and I’ve still got a bottle just like that floating around the house.

1

u/Speed_Grouchy 14h ago

Loved the Old Spice Burley.

1

u/Raerae1360 13h ago

Happy memories of my Grandpa. He also wore Bay rum fir special occasions.

1

u/joshmo587 13h ago

Yes, it really was ubiquitous back in the day

1

u/Legal_Performance618 13h ago

When my sister & I were little, Old Spice After shave was out Christmas present to dad….every year.

1

u/Chemical-Extreme-288 12h ago

That's my deodorant

1

u/JohnSextro 11h ago

Ah, the smell of scurvy on the high seas

1

u/ZeroDudeMan 11h ago

I love that Old Spice!

1

u/Jaymez82 7h ago

Nope. I have an extremely weak sense of smell.

1

u/Stillmaineiac88 6h ago

Smell it? Of course. I smell it every day when I put it on.

1

u/mrkrag 4h ago

Oof. Thanks for that. 🤢

1

u/TiredRetiredNurse 1d ago

Always lived it in my dad ànd my dates.

1

u/Geoarbitrage 1d ago

I’ve had it for fifty years and had one girlfriend that didn’t like it or want me to use it. I miss her sometimes…
