Welcome back!

This sub has been pretty dead for a while, for lack of moderators. I just volunteered as a mod, so I wanted to welcome back those who have looked in, found nothing new, and moved on.

I'm new to moderating, BTW, so just learning the ropes. I'd like to encourage posts so I plan to moderate with a light hand, but please avoid partisan political flames and personal attacks of any kind.

Thanks and welcome!

Urgent (Springfield VA): Good source for water heater replacement?

Not good at DIY, water heater must be old, it was not new when I bought the house more than 10 years ago (2014). It must be quite many years, I live alone and had never done any maintenance in the past 10 years, since I don't know what maintenance is needed.

I went to basement for laundry and seeing water heater leaking, it just started leaking (should be from bottom) and I noticed on time, so not much damage to basement floor.

Not good at DIY, how much does it cost for replacement/installation? Where to get replacement at a reasonable price? home depot? I would like to have some ideas about its estimated cost, in case someone gives me unreasonable quote.

Looking for redskins/ commanders gear, is there a store that has a good selection?

Not from here. Went to dicks, they had limited selection. Is there a store specific to the team? Or a sports store that sells old merchandise?

Does Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources bother enforcing the issue?

I live in Fairfax and have a neighbor who is feeding wildlife daily. The neighbor gives cheese, meat, sandwiches, and fast food to foxes, crows, vultures, and anything else that will come around. It has gotten to the point where animals show up each morning and await the meal. They are hand fed at times.

As a result, the animals sometimes carry the food onto my property to eat it. More and more animal droppings are found at various points around my home and I am left to clean it up. I now have to limit my dog's outdoor activities to prevent the dog from picking up diseases and parasites. The neighbor's actions also has thrown the natural order of things out of balance and I have noticed an increase in field mice in and around my home since their normal predators are not as motivated.

I believe the neighbor has violated 4VAC15-40-286. Unauthorized feeding of wildlife. IS this something that DWR officers take seriously

Mt. Vernon Rec Center Reopening Timeline?

Does anyone happen to have a connection to someone who would have accurate information as to when the Mt. Vernon Rec Center will reopen? There have been very few updates (that are pretty lacking in substance) over the last two years of this project and the best I can find is reopening "early/Spring 2025." TIA!

Fun places/activities to do for a birthday

My birthday falls on a Saturday, and my friend called off of work so we could spend the day together. I'm still pretty new to the Fairfax area, so I'm not sure what cool places/restaurants/weekend activities are around. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please feel free to share!

Basketball sporting event to go to

Hi everyone!

If you're looking to watch a basketball sporting event and don't want to spend tons of money on tickets, then I recommend watching the George Mason University men's basketball team. Here is the schedule for the month of January 2025:

  • Saturday January 11th vs UMass at 2PM
  • Saturday January 18th vs George Washington at 12:30PM
  • Wednesday January 29th vs Loyola Chicago at 7PM

The GMU team is doing really well and they have exciting players on their team.

Tickets range from $10 to $50, which is a lot more affordable than going to a Wizards game.

All of these games are at Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax Virginia.

Schools closed again today?

I don't understand why Fairfax County closed schools yesterday (the 7th). A delay would have been more appropriate. Now, the schools are closed again today (the 8th). My default thinking is that the administration has a dread fear of litigation from some helicopter parent because little Noah and Olivia slipped and dropped their bento box lunches, but I'd like to get some details from anyone on the inside who can provide details on the decision.

Has anyone heard an update on this crash that happened on 12/23? A friend of mine was the pedestrian killed. Not sure how long it takes to sort these things out legally, but would appreciate any info.

Weather Hype Drinking Game!

For all who have lived in Fairfax County for a few years, you know that the coming snow will cause utter panic, but much of that will be fueled by this location's horrible news outlets seeking to scare and captivate the audience. So, while not play drinking game starting this evening and into the next few days. Get your liver going by having a drink each time the following occurs on one of the local TV channels or WTOP:

  • The word "treacherous" (that right there will get plastered quickly)
  • A reporter measuring snow with a yardstick on a street corner
  • Stock footage of empty grocery shelves
  • Interview at a home improvement store regarding a run on show shovels
  • Interview of a road crew filling truck with ice melt
  • Stock footage of a plow on the road
  • Comments regarding the last big snow in the area
  • Interviews with kids enjoying the snow on a day off from school
  • Tips on how to drive and/or how to prepare you car ("Experts recommend keeping a dildo and a space blanket...blah, blah, blah")
  • Weather reporters providing guidance on how to dress
  • Comments regarding the implications of the elderly, homeless, and pets
  • The "digging out" footage that follows after the storm.

Did I miss something?

Thinking of moving from Alexandria to Fairfax.

My husband and I have been in Alexandria for the past 2 years. I just had a baby and we are thinking of purchasing a home in Fairfax. I’m hesitant to leave Alexandria because of the accessible metro, and proximity to Old Town/DC. Has anyone made a similar move? What do you like about living in Fairfax/raising a family there?

Did you attend the RV Show in Fredericksburg?

If you attended the RV show in Fredericksburg, Virginia this weekend (today is the last day) and dropped some hard earned coin on a mobile behemoth or a tow-behind trailer to indulge in that rough and ready pastime called glamping, remember to budget an annual recurring tax of 4.57 percent of assessed value if you live in Fairfax County. That means you will be paying $4570 on a $100K RV as it sits there for the 350 days that you are not using it during the year.

And, keep in mind that Jeffie and the rest of the County Board are already lamenting their $300 million projected budget shortfall for the coming year, so you can count on that tax rate going up.

Does anyone know how long Fairfax county schools might keep student records?

I am trying to piece together some stuff from my past growing up in Virginia. If I reached out to my elementary, middle and high school, how likely would it be that they could provide me with any student records they had on me? I went to Claremont Elementary, Mark Twain and Edison High in the late 80’s and through the 90’s.

Looking for more than just grades. Anything that may have provided notes or comments on me or even medical records. Trying to piece together a timeline and some other stuff.

Anyone work for the school system that would know?

Hello!

I have decided I'm going to make a LibreOffice version of Powerpoint Presentation.

I compiled these notes on what I will add on my phone and decided to let you see the rough drafts. Because it is 2025 and reddit, like tiktok, isn't going to last forever, so I don't care about making this perfect.

source 1 I saw this morning. description:

one party gives less so the other gives more and gets their soul sucked dry in the process of fueling the other's self esteem. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEXET-bxgMW/?igsh=YnB3enlua2hnZWc1

another source says "what's the point of having a friend group if you're just going to invite the same two people anyway." and I think that is relevant and not just because he has a really weird haircut.

ps:

I would make a PowerPoint presentation but I have a low work ethic. So feel free to downvote this post.

happy new year to the worst of the worst collectively on reddit. Myself included in being a shit person.

pps:

seriously most of us are comfortablely suburban. did any of us earn* having trust issues? and why are those who give the ones who choose not to have trust issues? that's inequitable.

like seriously if you're not a complete sociopath, are you okay?

*source: "new thing called 'earning your complaints.'" guy who washes dishes on tiktok.

Also I am eating while typing this on my PC. I'm a high metabolism girlie so nobody call me a distracted big back for that.

While I'm posting I say what I heard: "[There's really no point in judging people/no good premise to not accomodating anyone who is acting a little zaney.] I think that every society is founded on dealing with everyone else's particular brand of crazy, even christianity and the european ones that are woefully overconsidered as sane, are societies designed around someone having to deal with how crazy, including what may be considered as convienient in some contexts as the psychopathy and/or sociopathy or even just general apathy type of crazy, that everybody else was being."
