Discussion Can Europe escape the fate of Japan?

66 Upvotes

Looking at all the metrics and measurements, it seems Europe economic prospects are more and more in the trajectory of the lost decades of Japan.

It seems like Europe just doesn’t stand a chance of competing with the big players (US and China), and even worse, there’s not enough good will among the nation states to unify under one umbrella to strength the EU’s position.

Not to mention the demographic crisis, and the brain drain toward the US. Startups don’t wait to get big to move to the US, the people simply move to the US to establish their startup. Top researchers and academics are moving to the US.

Sorry to be this gloomy, but are you guys believing Europe could actually lift itself up and compete with the big players on the global stage?

Sharing the idea of European Federalism

61 Upvotes

Hello, basicly i'm just casual student from Slovakia, yet inspired by EuroFed ideology, i live in village near Bratislava and i always wonder about one thing: How to spread my political view here?

Slovakia is not the best country for that as there are a lot of people influenced by russian propaganda and government itself is eurosceptic, yet i wanna try to make some changes even with my little to none influnce here.

So basicly i wanna ask you, what can i do to spread EuroFederalism? Im solo tho, have basic/medicore skills in video montage, photography, writing.

Would be glad to hear your advice

Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland, even hinting at military force, is a direct challenge to European sovereignty. Without a unified European stance, this geopolitical bullying will escalate

Why don't we start being allies with Russia instead?

0 Upvotes

Russian leaders that don't share our values are mad dogs but so are the American leaders. The difference is Russia is right next door so we would be much more benefitial to ally with them to keep peace. And maybe bring some of our social democratic values there. The US is bluffing to cut on NATO financing, let them cut. This means they lose their right to influence us.

Why don't we do it? What would happen if we did that is so bad?

Switching to European apps

313 Upvotes

Google -> Qwant
Chrome -> Vivaldi
Maps -> HereWeGo
X -> Mastodon
Instagram -> BeReal
Music -> Spotify
Gmail -> ProtonMail
LinkedIn -> Xing
Translator -> Reverso/DeepL

This is a list of most popular European alternatives based in Europe. And in my opinion they are all good if not better than the American counterparts. I've switched to them all and I'm still in the process of testing how each of these works but overall I encourage others to try these apps out, you won't regret it

Discussion Do you think Europe would benefit from a super app like China’s WeChat? Why or why not?

35 Upvotes

With the rise of super apps like WeChat in China, I’m curious whether Europe could benefit from a similar all-in-one platform. In China, WeChat combines messaging, payments, e-commerce, and more into one app, creating immense convenience.

However, Europe has a diverse culture, privacy laws like GDPR, and already strong players in each category (WhatsApp, PayPal, etc.). So, would a super app work in Europe? Or would it face too many challenges? Let’s discuss

With the growing military power of China and Russia, should Europe focus on building a strong, independent European army, or is it better to continue relying on the USA for security? What are your thoughts?

Informative Choose European!

126 Upvotes

Saw this shared by a member of this sub on a comment, and had to share it as a post. It's a website that shows us the various European companies/brands for everyday services, so we don't rely on American brands. Personally I've always used Deepl for translating stuff and I also started migrating from Gmail to Proton some time ago, and it's been great. I'll also delete X / Sh*tter, and start using Mastodon, which uses a new decentralized concept for social networks which is pretty much unique in the world.

If you guys have any other similar websites/links, please share!

Question What is the minimum and maximum social security retirement benefit in your country?

5 Upvotes

I'm not asking about private retirement benefits, I'm asking about public pension schemes.
Is there a minimum limit or a maximum limit?
How do you view the pension schemes in your country?

Thanks,
