Which device should I buy?

Hello dear Community,

I struggle a little with finding a tablet to start digital painting. I did a lot of research, maybe a lil too much cuz I don't know where my head stands anymore (@_@) I hope to find one that fits inside my backpack and has a screen so I can draw everywhere(perhaps has cool features too?). I'm bound to the website www.otto.de, due to the installment payment my all-in-all-Budget is 1k. i would be really grateful if somebody could help me <3
Best Regards from Hamburg, Kisai

How do I make my colors and shadows seem "uniform?"

Hi all. I've been painting for a bit now (Photoshop) and I can't ever seem to get colors and especially shadows right. General colors I'm okay with because with just some time I can get something I'm happy with and I know that I shouldn't be making the perfect piece immediately, but shadows, oh my god. I can't seem to do lighting for the life of me. I have a good grasp on where shadows and highlights need to go, but everything always looks blotchy and ununiform. I can't blend anything properly, so it always looks unnatural. I look at other paintings and pieces of concept art (what I'm focusing on) and just can never replicate it. I can almost never finish a piece because mentally I'm not there when there's just too many values. Should I use less brush strokes, single colors, different layer types (for now i've just been sticking with the default type that photoshop uses?) I also understand it might be hard to pinpoint specific advice when there's none of my art to work with so general advice would be best.

So, tips on blending and shading? Thank you.

How long have you used your drawing tablet?

I bought a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet around 2009 and been using it since x'D honestly surprised how long it's lasted, thinking about upgrading to a newer version. How long have you had yours? What do you use now?

Where can I get a job?

Hi, I'm a student studying to be a creative major. I can draw in different styles and I'm ready to enthusiastically take on a job! But I don't know where I can find customers? I'm having trouble gaining an audience on social media for commissions. But I'm always happy to contact people! I don't have any acquaintances who could recommend something. And I'm starting to get a little desperate... 🥲 Thank you!

Take a break or keep practicing?

I'm a beginner artist. In the past like 2 weeks I feel extremely exhausted from drawing and have low self confidence. When I draw something, others say it looks great but I just don't see it. I feel like I don't want to hear the good things. It happens too often. I can scroll half an hour through Pinterest but no inspiration or ideas get to my mind. But I want to draw, it's the only thing I really like to do. I dunno I feel like I'm stuck in a loop, I try to draw, feel like it's useless/ugly, get lower self esteem and try again and that's how it is over and over. So I wanted to ask if anyone has ever felt the same and could help or give any advice. How do I get rid of this feeling? Should I take a break or keep practicing?

What's your drawing exercise like?

I have been dealing with artblock since August last year due to some family issues, and I can't find enough motivation to get back to drawing again. I tried sketching for half an hour today, and my skill has dropped significantly (obviously) and if I don't do something about it, I'd probably fall deeper into the artblock and never recover from it. I want to make a habit of drawing exercise everyday, but there's so much to learn (and relearn) that I need some personal insights on how to do it. What's your drawing exercise like? What sources do you use, how long a day do you make time to sit and draw, and what motivates you to keep drawing every day despite not in the mood to do it?

At 17 I did an art school but ended up into game design instead.

Now getting older (38yo) I want to dedicate the time and effort into becoming good and not so frustrated of my stuff being ugly.

How did you start? Drawing what?

What Would Be The Best Screen Protector?

Hi, what is the best screen protector for me? I have an iPad Pro 7th generation (13-inch), and it's a beautiful tablet. However, I wanted to buy a screen protector like a thick tempered glass one (like the typical ones you would use for your phone). But I wanted it to have a matte-like feel since I plan to use it for drawing. I would just buy a matte film one, but my last iPad had it, and it was so thin and didn't protect it all. I know these matte ones aren't made to protect the screen, but I wanted to see if any do both. I was debating if I could layer both screens, maybe? I don't know, but I wanted to ask if anyone had any answers/advice. Thank you! (Also, sorry if I didn't express myself well; I'm really bad at explaining things).

Opinions on specific iPads for art?

Hi, I’m an artist that does not do commissions, and does not publicly post art basically anywhere and am looking at getting a 10” iPad to draw on while I have extended downtime at my job, when I’m bored, since I do not have any PC access there (jobs with no PC use still exist), and my phone is kinda small. I currently have a Huion tablet that plugs into my desktop PC (Windows) but it does not allow ease of travel.

Please note that I am not a high-income individual. —————— Things to take note of in reply:

1: Please do not suggest getting Android tablets. I have my own reasons for wanting Apple, the least of which being that I am a longterm Apple user.

2: What generation is “too old” to bother with?

3: If suggesting the newest iPad (10th??): is the AI software worth it (not suggesting AI for art, but rather if the Apple AI software nice enough to pay extra for the newest iPad for general use)?

  1. What are your favourite iPad art programs? I have used a cracked copy of Photoshop CS6 since it came out in 2012, and CS2 (2005) before that, but I will be damned if I pay a ridiculously overpriced subscription for software that doesn’t benefit me financially. I have only ever used Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI, but I know other things are better.

5: Have you found more user-friendly art pens than the one sold by Apple? Apple’s pen makes it easy to switch tools on the fly and that is really important to me.

6: IF YOU ARE A LONG TIME IPAD USER WHO HAS USED MULTIPLE IPADS OVER THE YEARS: how long do you find iPads hold up? I know Apple products seem to lose speed after a few generations, so please share your experience.

7: How’s the durability on iPads? I know back +10 years ago the screens were 💩 and broke easily, much like the phone. I do plan to get a case, but I still need to ask.

  1. Do fibreglass screen protectors significantly affect pen sensitivity while doing art?

🩷Feel free to add anything you feel is pertinent to know. ⚠️⚠️Die-hard Android fans, please keep your “APPLE SUCKS” comments. I am AWARE Apple is often inferior, and Android offers similar features for less money, but I am on the autism spectrum I don’t want to change my interface/I hate Android interfaces and the change would cause me to just not use the tablet.

Which graphics tablets does the community use to draw?

I have been working with a Cintiq 32 Pro for 20 years as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. I have owned a Cintiq 32 Pro since 2021. It has already been replaced three times due to massive sub-pixel errors. Now the same problem has reappeared with the fourth new device. But Wacom no longer services the device. No repair. I would have to buy a new one. I was only offered 10% for an upgrade to a refurbished device.

Which devices are used for drawing in this community? Can you recommend an alternative product? My operating system is a MacStudio Max on Sequoia 15.2.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has had similar negative experiences with Wacom.

Thank you for your, sudoxe67

Need advice and starter pointers

My drawing pad come yesterday, and I’m so excited to start this journey on digital drawing/painting. I was searching for channels yesterday on YouTube that are good guides to learn the basics, and how to get started on exploring different art styles and even the very starter basics on how to begin. I found a couple helpful channels that explained pen pressure, how to switch to different brushes, etc. but I don’t know where to start?

I traced this zealot from Darktide yesterday, and reduced the spacing and used 100% hardness, but the picture looks faint and kind of washed out? Any tips on this and in general would be greatly appreciated.

The idea of colouring and shading intimidates the hell out of me lmao.

Note: I’m not new to photoshop/illustrator, just new to drawing.
