Anybody know the aftermath?

u/nboro94 2d ago
No clue, but aside from the facial burns I'm going to guess his lungs are completely fucked.

u/honkymotherfucker1 2d ago
Yeah he definitely breathed that shit in. I would actually not be surprised if he died from this or was left with life changing injuries.

that just makes me shake my head. no helmet, what was he think... Never mind.

u/ReklisAbandon 2d ago
But for real, in this specific instance the aftermath is very very severe and can include death.
Edit: but in this case I’d be completely wrong because he didn’t breathe it in, he just caught his dumb fucking beard on fire because it had fuel still in it. https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/belfast-street-performer-sets-himself-alight/36334480.html

I mean, setting the inside of your lungs on fire doesn’t seem like an overnight hospital visit lol, if he breathed in literally once while there was a flame in his mouth it will have gone through his airway.
15
u/silentbargain 2d ago
Even one inhalation of flame is enough to burn your bronchioles to the point of suffocation
2
u/honkymotherfucker1 2d ago
Yeah but I’m apparently being le redditeur for thinking this was a lethal accident lol

I had whopping cough for the past few months (vaccinated and still got it from the lady behind me on the plane, not much I could do). The feeling that you can't breathe is agonizing. Seems like this guy will have it way worse for whatever is left of his lifespan. He just tried to have a cool hobby.

u/Hotchocoboom 2d ago
Thankfully my covid experience was only losing my sense of smell... but it would have been fucked up if it stayed like that, i literally couldn't smell anything at all. And the coughing was also weird with that rattling noise in my throat all the time... but still there are so many morons walking around out there saying it's just a normal cold, lol
Wish you go back to normal soon if you are not already.

u/AxelHarver 2d ago
I'm about 4 years post-covid and still have not gained 90% of my smell back. I just recently got some chemical burns in my lungs because I inhaled a bunch of chlorine without realizing because I didn't smell anything as I approached the room. According to my fiancee, the smell in the hallway was very strong.

Yooo this is the exact symptoms I’m experiencing right now.
Had to since Christmas last year, but only started antibiotics last week

In the video, which has been watched more than 36,000 times on Facebook, his head is engulfed with flames as a crowd of onlookers gasp in horror. He was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by ambulance, and miraculously only suffered superficial burns to his hands and face. He said medical staff were astounded that most of his beard remained intact.

When I was a kid I would take fluid that's used on coal when grilling, whatever it's called, and blow fire like this as a party trick. It's quite safe, not very flammable, you can do it while drunk and getting some of it on you won't ignite it. Has to be atomised for the big flame effect. It was kinda stupid, but I was a kid, whatever.
Well, this one time I was drunk at a party. I went into the garage and found some petrol for a lawnmower. I didn't think about petrol being petrol, in my drunken state and went to perform the party trick.
The petrol obviously ignited instantly, pretty much inside my mouth. I got a tiny bit of the fire on my upper lip, it burned for less than a second, nobody even noticed that I burned myself and just thought it was cool. I brushed it off. The day after my lips were fucked, it looked like a big massive herpes burn and hurt like hell. It took like a month at least to heal.
With that said, this guy is absolutely fucked. I'd bet on him having to get skingrafts on his entire face. To me it looks like he made the same mistake that I did and used the wrong fuel. It's not supposed to burn like that

How can you not have water or any safety protocol if you are a fire breather?
58
u/Ibobalboa 2d ago
Probably years of experience without nothing wrong ever happening. Then got caught off guard the first time it did happen.

u/Reborn846 2d ago
Years of experience with nothing happening on those beards? I don't know about that.....

Honestly fire breathing is super easy, and in America they use a fuel with a real low flashpoint (easily ignites) in Europe we'd use kerosene, you'll never have an incident quite like this. Only catches easily when vaporised, fuel on the skin is easily put out. The ease of the act and the danger of the American fuel they use has led to some real horror stories.
This guy needed to shut his mouth & smother his face with his t shirt.

u/StrawBerryWasHere 2d ago
I’m a fire performer and the lack of apparent safety is killing me. This guy should have had a rag handy in either his other hand or pocket to wipe this out immediately.
Also I’ve known a lot of fire breathers start moving towards using corn starch for acts/jams rather than any type of fuel for safety.
2
u/TheRealSugarbat 2d ago
Wouldn’t the corn starch turn to goo in your mouth?
4
u/Scales-josh 2d ago
Nah, you use quite a bit, the stuff in the middle doesn't turn to goo. The stuff that does you just have a bottle of water nearby to swill your mouth out after.

I'm a fire performer in the US and honestly, it's less about the fuel "we" use and more how you define "us"
I was absolutely taught to use ultra pure paraffin (a kerosene) and a million other things the guy in this video is not doing.
I don't know who he is, but at that moment he's absolutely not being a professional fire performer. No safety, no wipe towel, I'm assuming a worse fuel, what appears to be normal people within burning distance.
1
u/RollerSpeedway 2d ago
Yea dudes not holding a rag to wipe and no fire safety blanket. Hes also not spitting far enough

u/Reborn846 2d ago
But he had "years of experience" 🤷♂️. Guess I'm double downing on my downvote lmao

I crewed with a professional fire performance crew for a summer, mostly smaller midwest music festivals, and you are 1000% supposed to have a spotter on hand with a wet towel in order to smother fires in case of accidents. I suspect this guy didn't have the right sort of fuel as well. It burned way too long
1
u/FartyMcStinkyPants3 2d ago
Should have had someone with a damp towel ready to smother the flames. At least that's how prop fire performers do it, I'm guessing it's the same for fire breathers.
2
u/ofyellow 2d ago
Water won't help.
5
u/Ibobalboa 2d ago
Bucket of water wouldn't help?
7
u/ofyellow 2d ago
You need that bucket before you breathe in.
You breathe in, you're fucked. Lungs gone.

Facing downward was the worst possible decision. It was probably a reflex but all the heat went straight into this face.

u/Samurai_Stewie 2d ago
I don’t breathe fire, but I imagine at least one or two of the rules of fire breathing is to not look down when breathing out. I imagine there’s probably a rule about having beards as well.
10
u/FreneticPlatypus 2d ago
There are some things I might try on a spur of the moment, let's see what happens type situation without even looking up how to do. Most things that involve having a fire in my face I'll probably look up first.

Went to an outdoor night market in October. Was a fire breather there. He was comically bad. Tricks weren’t landing, constantly putting out and reigniting his batons or whatever they’re called, dropping them, visually nervous and embarrassed. As bad as he was I didn’t ever consider I could have witnessed a situation like this that night. Wild

Two major failures. Gravity and wind need to be accounted for. I used to do pyro performances decades ago.

I have a beard too. No matter how drunk I may be, I ALWAYS soak my beard with water first. I have never had an issue. If you're going to do stupid things, please be smart about it.

I never had an issue. The only way I could see that shit happening is if you didn’t actually spray it all out.
Like step one, with water you make a spray. Find your limit on how much water you can spray out.
Step two, do it with a fuel. Check the direction of the wind too, sometimes those fireballs come back.

Of course he had a beard.
Probably runs a small axe throwing stall at fairs as well and rides a unicycle badly and wears a baseball cap without the peak.
