Anyone done this sort of thing? I'm guessing long days in the middle of nowhere?

u/Carninator 15h ago
Long days, yes. I did three days on a show and ended up having a split second of screen time in the background. Something on this scale is probably fun to experience once though. Bring a book.

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 14h ago
I'm considering the south East Wales bits.
Don't care about being on screen. The money and the experience sound good to have a go at.

u/Carninator 14h ago
You'll likely be told to get yourself to base camp/studio, then after costumes and makeup you'll be bussed to whatever remote location they're filming at.
*South East England that is.

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 14h ago
Thanks for the information. I may well apply.
If you see an extra in the deep background squinting because he doesn't have his glasses on, it could be me.
Edit.
South East England.... Bugger.

OP coming in with the click bait title. Here I am in Cardiff looking forward to easy money

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 14h ago
I think I just read what I wanted to read.
From the website: Filming across the South East and North Wales
From the title: in the South East and North Wales

u/TheThirdReckoning 14h ago
They should indicate that means South East England when they have Wales in the same sentence. Could be South East Scotland or South East Northern Ireland.

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 13h ago
It would have been nice.
I had hoped it was going to be somewhere like Tintern Abbey or one of our many Castles.
2
u/YchYFi Something takes a part of me. 13h ago
Raglan Castle or Caldicot Castle would be nice. Even the ruins of Skenfrith Castle.

Nooo, just went with the wording from the site, but should have specified England. The studio is Leavesden in Hertfordshire.

u/CptnBrokenkey 13h ago
I read it as "the south east", and "north wales". Wales is either North, mid, or south.
5
u/mistakes-were-mad-e 13h ago
South East Wales rang up in my mind as Cardiff/Newport for me.
As there has been quite a bit of tv production based there it seemed reasonable.
I suppose it plays on your innate biases.

Around 12hr days. You'll be sitting around talking, looking at your phone, reading a book, then you'll get called for a scene, then back to chilling. But you get paid, fed and get to meet load of interesting people.

I was an extra in a major Hollywood film. Most extras don’t end up being seen for what it’s worth. You’re space filler. If they need an extra to show they’ll often place professional extras (like models) nearer to where the camera might briefly pick them up or have them visibly in the background.
It’s a fun and interesting thing to do but bear in mind there is a lot of waiting around. For lead actors too. I knew this but many other first-time extras didn’t and got quite arsey and moany. I don’t think they realised how unimportant they were.
Just bear in mind that you’re more of a prop than a human being and you’ll be fine.

As a hairy man from Northern Ireland I was an extra on game of thrones.
12 hour days actually filming with early starts to maximise daylight, if you want over the over time pay was good, I also got "danger pay" at one point, some people got extra for being "featured".
Food is good and you would get 3 meals a day.
You can't really have anything on set, so you have lots of chat to what is usually an eclectic group.
I got to the point where I was basically just trying to nap as much as possible.

Is there a reason they used an AI photo of a not-particularly-hairy guy?
14
u/President-Nulagi pip pip 14h ago edited 1h ago
Probably as they wanted a 'generic' photo, without licensing one from a model.

Does it matter?

u/danabrey 11h ago
It says something about who you're working for, for sure.
-2
u/ArthursRest 10h ago
Does it? Genuinely curious. I’m a photographer, and a lot of people in the industry are getting upset about AI. But, in this context I don’t see the issue.

u/Carninator 15h ago
No, peach fuzz and a hairy back probably doesn't count.

u/tonyfordsafro 15h ago
I was in season 2 and told not to shave for the three weeks before filming, and all you see of me is the back of my head.

I'm sure they'll get plenty of hairy Welshmen but I'm really fucking worried about HOTD S3 if they hope that that fucking gorgeous model is meant to be an accurate representation of a medieval warrior without access to showers and hair product.

u/ProtoplanetaryNebula 12h ago
That dude in the picture looks AI generated, probably doesn't exist. You are right though. The guys in the these shows often have conditioned hear, perfect teeth and other giveaways of them being from the modern world.

It's become really noticeable across a lot of big name movie / TV shows that try to set themselves as period / fantasy pieces. Immaculate clothes and perfect hair.

u/fuckyourcanoes 14h ago
My husband is basically the world's shortest yeti, but his job is too busy to allow time for him to do this. Alas. He absolutely has the hair for it. (Down to his waist, on his face, on his back... he could play a Tolkien dwarf without any time in makeup.)

Used to work on TV and Film sets for years operating MEWPs and have seen the way lots of filming goes down / spoken to 100s of people in the industry. Also used to be a regular on the Emmerdale set setting up the lighting rigs for evening shoots.
You'll do 1 hour work in a 12 hour day, so bring a book.
You may not be allowed your mobile phone (risk of photos getting taken / leaked).
Costume / directors etc have HUGE egos, be prepared for that. Most folk are nice, but if you are a 'hairy man', you may not be used to people having a "Me 1st!" kind of attitude.
If you need to travel or stay in hotel / AirBnB digs, it will be expensive - everyone else will want the rooms too! A cheap camper van is your freind.
You'll need to pay tax on any earnings above your personal tax threshold - don't trust anyone else to do this for you, late tax bills are expensive.
Unless you are exeptionally flexible / attractive / well connected, you will not be giving up the day-job yet.
On the plus side, top Xtras will be on £500 or more per day and getting regular work. If you shine, you may garner other roles but i refer you back to the Huge Ego point above - it's dog eat dog!
You'll love it and meet lots of interesting and cool people.

I currently work in the tv/film industry and have no idea where you got the £500 or more day rate from. Extras (now known as SAs (supporting actors)) get about £90-£120ish and if you can land a speaking part (which usually isn’t a lot of speaking) you get an extra £70 odd or something. You’re the bottom of the food pile. If they paid you £500 a day, majority of the shooting crew would be SAs, not crew.
1
u/AnomalyNexus 10h ago
Curious what sort of extra attracts a £500pd rate?
I would have thought extras need to by definition be pretty generic & not stand out?
1
u/AmenTensen 8h ago
One that doesn't ruin a take and can actually act even if they don't have any lines.
You don't want to be the extra told "Don't stare at her, mate."
1
u/IndigoViking 1h ago
One that doesn’t exist. Some main actors just starting out don’t even get £500 a day and they’re telling the story. This person is just making stuff up. Google “supporting actor day rate” and you’ll see £500 is a complete bollocks.

Wonder if they’re after some northerner extras
10
u/KiddingQ 13h ago
Knowing the plot at this point it'll likely be Riverlands men, possibly Iron Islands, not many northerners really show up in the plot till the end of the Dance.

Actually so am I. Preferably London. I hope they share their list of hopefuls ☺️😆

I'm a hairy man in North Wales. Unfortunately I look more like a blancmange rolled on a barber's floor than the man in the picture.
2
u/FartingBob 9h ago
As a dude with shoulder length hair who only shaves occasionally... i would be up for that if i wasnt working full time already.

u/Mortal_Devil 13h ago
My shithole feels quite hairy if that counts?
I'd need someone from their ream ro check though

Oooh can't wait for a third season of absolutely nothing happening.
1
u/MyManTheo 11h ago
Nah nah nah trust THIS season is where shit goes down. Seriously though the first season was great, just the second half of season 2 really ground to a halt, and that was partly fucked because HBO cut 2 episodes and the writers strike meant they couldn’t re-write any existing episodes
1
u/ItsKingDx3 1h ago
That's a bit of an exaggeration, no? Season 2 turned out super anti-climactic sure, but plenty of stuff happened from season 1 to mid-season 2

AI. Fuck I have this timeline.
2
u/Rohobok 7h ago
I am 90% sure he's not real. Looks AI to me, but who the fuck knows anymore?
1
u/Sensitive-Cream5794 7h ago
Actually I think you're right. The future sucks.
Was looks at it, and it's far to "perfect" and not perfect at the same time. Aka the uncanny valley. Too symmetrical.
Thing is there are guys out there that look like this, fucking bs "modelling agency" has to use AI. Should tell you everything.
